Live Online Classes for Michigan's Older Adults - Libraries can provide connections to these for their community members
by White, Shannon (MDE) 22 Jan '21

22 Jan '21

The initiative below is an offering from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and GetSetup-Michigan to offer Michigan's older adults free, live interactive online classes. These offerings are a great complement to programing you may be offering at your library already to your communities. The classes focus on supporting the use of digital devices such as computers, smartphone, tablets as well as other services such as Zoom, social media and more. There are more than 150 online classes for older adults and a coupon code of MICHIGANHEALTH listed on the site to use to waive any fees associated with the classes. Digital literacy is a great need in the senior community and during the pandemic there are many services available but not all of our residents are comfortable or know how to use them. This initiative is a great way to help raise the skills and knowledge around technology use as well as help create social connections for many that may feel extra isolated at this time. View a brief video about the program here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NapGT7MWQ-4&feature=youtu.be Use the link below to learn more and review the class offerings and registration: https://www.getsetup.io/michigan?fbclid=IwAR0Efy-BAUNZAslX_YmJqQpD2p3avfbR5… Some examples of what learners can take part in are: * Learn How to Use Zoom to Connect With Others * Take Fitness Classes to Stay Healthy * Join a Social Hour to Talk About Your Interests * Getting to Know Your Device * Stay Independent By Learning About Apps Shannon White Library of Michigan, 702 W. Audiovisual Preservation in Cultural Heritage Collections Survey
by Biz Gallo 21 Jan '21

21 Jan '21

Sarah Mainville, MSU Libraries’ Media Preservation Librarian, and Biz Gallo, Audiovisual Preservation Consultant, are researching methods to make audiovisual preservation more accessible to small, under-funded cultural heritage institutions in Michigan. We have created this survey with the purpose of assessing the prevalence of audiovisual media in cultural heritage collections, the comfort level of handling audiovisual media, and barriers to audiovisual preservation. The data collected in this survey will be anonymized and the results will be used for identifying areas of need for audiovisual preservation in the Michigan and Great Lakes region so that stakeholders can work together to provide resources, such as assistance or educational programs, to meet those needs. This survey should only take about 15 minutes to complete. Survey link: https://forms.gle/RCKLjaH82SupoGLr8

21 Jan '21

[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]New Career Tools in LearningExpress Library for 2021! In need of a new job? New career? The LearningExpress Library<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=lex> has plenty of options to assist in the changes you are seeking for the new year! Whether your interests are geared toward the military, a career in technology, or working on environmental issues, there are new resources in LearningExpress that can help you get started. Green Economy, Hot Technologies & STEM Occupations Although Job & Career Accelerator<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=P…> is not a new resource to LearningExpress Library, new search options have been added, and the occupation card information has been updated substantially. Users can now search through a curated list of hot technology, green economy, and STEM occupations. Each occupation card lists the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job as well as the required education, wage trends by individual state, current open positions in the field, and a video clip describing and showing a person working in that position. The Hot Technologies category allows users to explore the most in-demand technologies and software skills frequently included in employer job postings. Software Developers/ Applications<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>, and Market Research Analysts/Marketing Specialists<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…> are often listed among the results. (Once video card is opened, click anywhere on screen to start playing). In the Green Economy Occupations selection there is a New & Emerging category. Listed are those careers that are in-demand due to environmental changes, ecological scarcity, and sustainability. Occupation cards in this area include Biofuels Processing Technicians<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>, Climate Change Analysts<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>, Energy Brokers<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>, and Environmental Economists<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>. STEM Occupations offers 5 different categories for browsing: Managerial, Postsecondary Teaching; Research, Development, Design, and Practitioners; Sales; and Technologists and Technicians. Because of the variety of career paths in STEM occupations, jobs range from Agricultural Engineers<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…> to Video Game Designers<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>. [Screenshot of new career categories available in LearningExpress Library. The categories are Hot Technologies and STEM Occupations.] Military Pursuits Through the Career Exploration Center,<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PS…> users can make several selections related to military careers. There is an up-to-date fact sheet available for each branch of the military as well as the complete battery of ASVAB diagnostic exams, including all three levels of AFQT, Assembling Objects, Auto Shop and Information, Electronics Information, General Science, and Mechanical Comprehension. Upon exiting the military, the Job & Career Accelerator<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=P…> invites patrons to explore the Military to Civilian Occupations. This is a unique search tool, as it allows veterans to explore civilian occupations that are similar to the military jobs they once held. For example, a AN/USM-449A (V) Test Set Operator Intermediate Maintenance position in the Navy might pursue a civilian occupation for Electrical and Electronics Repairer of Commercial and Industrial Equipment<https://www.careeronestop.org/videos/careeronestop-videos-content.aspx?vide…>. There is an abundance of resources to explore within the LearningExpress Library in MeL.org.
