Hello! With April is Poetry Month coming up and the popularity of Amanda Gorman, I'm hoping to have a virtual poetry event at my library in April. Does anyone have any recommendations for good poetry-related presenters for teens? We're in Metro Detroit and I'd prefer to hire someone local, but I'll take any recommendations you have! Hello: Below is a press release on the newest MDHHS Order released today and in effect starting This coming Monday 2/8/2021, and in effect until Monday 3/29/2021. This new order permits contact sports to resume, with specific restrictions and guidelines. This new order contains no changes to restrictions now in place for libraries, including Masking, gathering or occupancy restrictions. Libraries: Still are limited to 30% of total occupancy (including staff present in the building). Still limited to no more than 10 people from no more than 2 households for meetings or activities in a shared space. Still prohibited from in-person Board meetings. If masks cannot be worn, participants must be regularly tested for COVID-19 consistent with guidelines issued by MDHHS. However, parents and athletes need to understand the risk involved with contact sports if they choose to participate. Sports that require frequent closeness between players make it more difficult to prevent disease transmission even when mitigation measures are in place, including masks. In recent days:  * Hospital capacity dedicated to COVID-19 patients has been in 10-week decline, with current capacity at 6.6% for beds with COVID-19 patients. Peaked at 19.6% on Tuesday, Dec. 4.  * Overall case rates:  Currently at 159 cases per million after peaking at 740 cases per million on Saturday, Nov. 14.  Rate has been in solid decline for 24 days. Three MERC regions in the state are now below 150 cases per million people: the Detroit, Traverse City and Upper Peninsula regions. * Positivity rate: currently at 4.9% and declining. This is the first time positivity has been this low since mid-October Contact sports are allowed as long as participants are masked during play or practice. For sports where masks cannot be worn and social distancing cannot be maintained all participants must be tested consistent with the program specified in the Testing and Additional Mitigation Measures for Athletic Practice and Play section of MDHHS’s Interim Guidance for Athletics which will be available online at Michigan.gov/coronavirus<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> on Sunday, Feb. 7. Sports organizers are encouraged to administer a testing program even if it is not required. Spectators are allowed with up to 250 people in stadiums that seat less than 10,000 and up 500 people at venues that seat over 10,000 people. “Today’s announcement is possible because of our progress over the last two months,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “Michiganders need to remain vigilant, however, as we now have a new more easily transmitted variant of this virus present in our state. All Michigan residents need to minimize their risk by avoiding gatherings, wearing masks properly, social distancing, and making a plan to get the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine when it is their turn.”    “I want to thank Governor Whitmer and her administration for the decision to begin winter contact sports competition,” said Dr. Michael Shibler, superintendent of Rockford Public Schools. “I applaud their priority to keep students and adults safe during the pandemic and for the decision to provide student-athletes the opportunity to compete.” Indoor residential and non-residential gatherings are limited to 10 people and two households. Registration open for new digital literacy virtual workshop for Michigan library staff

Registration is now open for a new virtual training for Michigan library staff on creating a digital literacy learning plan for library staff, offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is being offered multiple times through April and May to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. “Unlocking the Secrets of a Digital Literacy Learning Plan for Library Staff” is designed to equip you with the tools and a process to help you build a learning plan around technology and digital literacy skills for library staff. If you wish your library had such a learning plan in place, but you’re not sure where to start or how to organize it, then this workshop is for you! Developing a learning plan is essential in empowering staff to develop digital literacy and technology skills. In this four-hour virtual workshop, participants will learn the basics of creating a digital learning plan for their library that includes how to leverage collective strengths to build skills and how to incorporate technology competencies and create activities to help staff successfully achieve their digital literacy goals. This workshop is designed primarily for public library staff who have some responsibility or involvement in staff training. The workshop is designed to be interactive and will include small group activities in breakout rooms, and the use of a microphone and camera will be required for successful participation. Registration is just $15 and, because it is funded by the Library of Michigan, is open to Michigan Library staff. Each workshop will run from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Eastern with a 45-minute lunch break. This workshop will only be available as live virtual instruction. At the completion of the workshop, continued support will be provided to participants in the form of six monthly virtual coaching calls. This continued support will be completely voluntary and for the purpose of gaining support in creation and implementation of a digital literacy learning plan for participants’ own libraries. Hello all! Stair District Library started off 2021 with fantastic news. We are one of 200 libraries selected to receive a grant through Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC): Focus on Small & Rural Libraries <http://www.ala.org/tools/librariestransform/libraries-transforming-communit…>, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA). ALA recently opened a second round of LTC applications, and I highly encourage you to apply! LTC: Focus on Small & Rural Libraries <http://www.ala.org/tools/librariestransform/libraries-transforming-communit…> is a grant for those of us in small and rural communities to get funding to help us address issues of concern in our communities. Participating libraries receive training in how to lead conversations through a free ALA e-course <http://www.ala.org/tools/librariestransform/libraries-transforming-communit…> on basic facilitation skills; host at least one conversation (in-person or virtual) with community members on a chosen topic; and receive $3,000 to support community engagement efforts. Grant funds may cover a range of expenses, including staff time and collections and technology purchases. For our grant, we will lead discussions related to the recent closure of our award-winning community newspaper. The title of our discussion series is “Extra! Extra! Read All About It!...But Where?” ALA has 450 more grants to give out in this second round!
