The Clinton-Macomb Public Library is looking forward to a bright post-pandemic future with the districtwide renewal of our millage, the new North Branch opening next summer and a strategic realignment of our staffing structure. We are seeking high quality candidates with outstanding external and internal customer service skills to fill two full-time positions, one due to an internal promotion and the other due to filling a position that had been frozen pending the results of the millage renewal. Children's Services Librarian (two positions) - Provides professional library services to customers of all ages with a focus on children and their caregivers. Such services include reader's advisory, reference, programming, digital services troubleshooting and outreach. One position is based at the Main Library, the second at the North Branch, although both will be expected to be able to provide library service across the district as needed. Clarke Historical Library Speaker Series: Carl Doud on Mosquitoes & Miles Harvey on James Jesse Strang, the King of Beaver Island

The Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University is pleased to announce two fantastic events happening this Thursday (Oct. 29) and next Thursday (Nov. 5) evenings. On Thursday, October 29, at 7:00 pm, Carl Doud, US Navy Medical Entomologist and current director of Midland County Mosquito Control (MCMC), will explore the scourge of mosquitoes and malaria in Michigan's history. The state of Michigan was known to early 19th-century Americans as an area profuse with swamps, disease, and other hardships. Malaria was so widespread throughout the region that all expected to suffer from it and it was viewed less as a disease than simply a reality of life. Three aspects of early Michigan made for significant populations of mosquitoes and associated malaria: topography, the extent of forests, and the amount of wetlands. This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University's videoconferencing tool, Webex, and it will be recorded to enjoy it at a later time. Registration is required for the event and the shortened link to register is: https://bit.ly/3e25FRF On Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 pm, Miles Harvey, award-winning journalist and best-selling author of The Island of Lost Maps (2000) and Painter in a Savage Land (2008) will speak about his new work, The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch. This book examines the life and legacy of James Jesse Strang, the self-proclaimed king of a Mormon "utopia" on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. In 1844, after the death of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Strang was one of several figures who claimed they were his successors. Although Brigham Young eventually emerged as the principle leader, Strang led his followers out of Young's church and brought them to Beaver Island, where he declared himself divine king. Join us to learn about "one of the country's boldest con men and the boisterous era that allowed him to thrive." This presentation is free and open to the public. The Library of Michigan normally does two broad evaluation of our services each year. We do this so we can provide data to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that is required with our award of Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding. This fall survey covers the following programs: * Wandoo Reader * LM's Professional Development Collection and NASA Circulating STEM Kits * MeL eResources * MeLCat If you have participated in or used the programs or services above in the past year we hope you can provide some quick feedback through this survey. If you can take a moment to add your opinion we will have the data we need to report back to IMLS the main funder of these programs. Hello, The Holly Township Library Virtual Book Club is hosting Michigan Notable Author, John Smolens, on Wednesday 10/28/2020 at 6:30 pm. Mr. Smolens will be discussing his book, *Quarantine*, and may give us a glimpse into his just released novel, *Day of Days*. John Smolens has published twelve works of fiction, eleven novels and a collection of short stories. His most recent novel is *Day of Days*. His novel *Wolf’s Mouth *was selected as a Library of Michigan Notable Book for 2017. His earlier novels, *Cold, Fire Point, The Invisible World, The Anarchist, The Schoolmaster’s Daughter, *and* Quarantine *have been reissued in paperback and as e-books by Michigan State University Press. His work has appeared in publications such as *The North American Review, The Southern Review, The Massachusetts Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review,* *Columbia Journal of Literature and Art, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times *and *The Washington Post*. He was educated at Boston College, the University of New Hampshire, and the Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa. He has taught at Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, and is professor emeritus at Northern Michigan University, where he taught in the English Department and served as the director of the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing.
