Speaker Recommendation on The Orphan Train
by Mary Barker 04 Aug '26

04 Aug '26

The Pentwater District Library had a great speaker last evening. Sherry A. Burton was a wonderful guest at our library—pleasant, professional, and a captivating speaker. Her deep research, clear organization, and genuine care for the children’s stories behind The Orphan Train Saga make her an excellent choice for any library program. We strongly recommend her to other Michigan libraries looking for a meaningful, history‑rich author visit.” Her is her contact info if you would like to plan a visit from her.Contact & Booking Website: https://www.sherryaburton.co <https://www.sherryaburton.com>m Email: sherry(a)sherryaburton.com

Upcoming Event at BPL: A Leap from the Clouds: Michigan's Early Aeronauts
by Mick Howey 04 Aug '26

04 Aug '26

Hello Michlib! Please join us at 7:00 PM, Monday August for the hybrid event A Leap from the Clouds: Michigan's Early Aeronauts. Michigan’s early aeronautic pioneers daringly mixed entertainment and engineering. Whether they were acrobatic balloonists like the Herrguth Brothers or pilots like Donald “The Birdman” McGee, these aeronaut “professors” put their experiments to the test in front of captivated crowds in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jillian Reese, curator of exhibits at the Michigan History Center, is here to enlighten us on this 19th century crazy that swept the state. Tao here <https://www.baldwinlib.org/calendar/#/events/UH2WCVMFI9/instances/Ms09Yp7G4…> to register Registration required. Hybrid event. Attend in person (with an IN-PERSON ticket) or virtually (with a VIRTUAL ticket). Hope to see you there! School IDs as library cards
by Katrina Rogers 04 Aug '26

04 Aug '26

Hi all, I've been researching libraries that worked with their local school districts to give every enrolled kid a library card, and I have some questions for libraries that have done this: -Are the kids' cards online-only (so they can only use Libby/Hoopla/etc), or do they allow physical items to be checked out? -If they allow physical checkouts, are those different than the number allowed on your traditional library cards? -If they allow physical checkouts, how do you handle parents saying they didn't agree to pay for lost items? -Do you have more lost items than you did before starting the program? If so, how much more? -If a child already has a library card with lost item fees (so their account is blocked), do they get a new library card when they start school? Is their original account cleared? Or does nothing change? -If all the kids' cards have the same PIN, do you have security issues with kids trying to use each other's IDs? -Is there anything you changed after starting the program, or anything you wished you had known before starting it? Thanks for any information! Please share your thoughts on the Library of Michigan's LSTA activities!
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 03 Aug '26

03 Aug '26

Good afternoon everyone! Every five years, the Library of Michigan (LM) is required to complete an evaluation of its programs funded through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). LSTA provides federal funding for many LM programs, including MeLCat and MeL Databases, Continuing Education, Community Literacy/Summer Reading Program support, PLOUD, E-Rate, digitized local history collections, some grants, and more. Our evaluator (Carson Block Consulting) has prepared a survey to help inform the evaluation. The survey has been designed to be as brief and easy as possible for you to fill out! The time required to take this survey will depend on the number of LSTA programs that you have experience with. Each section should take about 5 minutes or less to complete. Survey Link: https://www.surveyhero.com/c/qyu3a4pf If you would like to familiarize yourself with or refresh your knowledge of LM's Programs and Goals, please review pages 5-8 of LM's Five-Year LSTA plan here: https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/-/media/Project/Websites/library… Your opinion matters!
