📣 Exciting News: The Book & Author Society Grants Are Back!
by Kelly Bennett 28 May '26

28 May '26

Dear Michigan Library Community, For the first time since before 2020, the Book & Author Society is thrilled to announce the return of our grant program! Thanks to the incredible, ongoing support of our literary community through event ticket sales and generous donations, we are proud to introduce the brand-new Book & Author Society Collection Grant . What is the Collection Grant? The Book & Author Society will fund one $1,000 project annually to a public library in Michigan. This grant provides seed money for the creation or enhancement of a physical or digital circulating collection. The proposed project should fill a specific need, encourage patron use of your collections, and be thoughtfully curated for patrons of a variety of demographic backgrounds. Because only one grant will be awarded per year, we expect a highly competitive group of applicants and look forward to reading your innovative ideas! How to Apply: Applications will open on June 1, 2026, and will be collected via an online form. To give you a head start, here is exactly what you will need to prepare for your submission: * Project Proposal / Narrative (500 words max): A detailed description of the project's goals and objectives, and a discussion of the impact this collection will have on your community. * Demonstrated Financial Need (500 words max): A short description of how this grant will help fund a project that your library would not be able to pursue otherwise. * Detailed Budget (500 words max): An itemized list of materials/supplies and their intended use. (Please note: Grant funds cannot be used for staffing costs). * Supporting Documentation (Optional): You may upload files such as photos of your library space or sample titles to help the committee visualize your project. Note: The winning library will be required to report on the grant's impact by providing a short video or written paragraph for future promotional use. Important Dates to Remember: * June 1, 2026: The online application officially opens! * July 13, 2026: Application window closes. * August 3, 2026: The awardee will be contacted. * September 14, 2026: The grant will be officially presented at our upcoming Book & Author Event featuring Marjan Kamali! What's Next? Keep an eye on your inbox! We will be sending out the official application link on June 1st. We are so grateful to everyone who has attended our luncheons, purchased books, and donated to the Society. It is because of you that we can resume our mission of giving back to the libraries that do so much for our communities. The theme is Mythical Creatures, and the slogan is Libraries Are Legendary™. As we start work on creating artwork/selecting products for 2028, we are asking member libraries for feedback. This survey is open through June 7th, and we'd love for anyone in your library who has anything to do with summer to give their opinion! That includes youth and adult library staff, marketing folks, purchasing decision-makers, etc. Any and all feedback is welcome! [Several images of the Tooele City Library's Digby sculpture in different settings in the library.] Digby at the Tooele City Library This summer, staff at the Tooele City Library created a sculpture of Digby, the triceratops mascot invented for the 2026 CSLP Summer Reading program. Made with cardboard, insulation foam, papier-mache, and air-dry clay, Digby is almost two feet tall from nose to crest, and two feet long from nose to tail. He will be displayed at the front of the library throughout the Summer Reading program and will be featured in photos and videos posted on their social media accounts. Digby has been busy since his completion! He has spent time learning about library services and standards and is excited to share them. He is very excited to celebrate America 250™ and has a few patriotic costumes planned for later this summer. Digby has made fast friends with the Buffalo statue posted at the front of the Tooele City Library and hopes to make many more this summer as they Unearth a Story™! -Submitted by Alyssa Enslen, Programming Specialist at the Tooele City Library, Tooele, UT [Image banner that says "Partnership Spotlight" with an image of a T-rex reading a book] How the IDEA Squad Is Redefining Digital for Library Programming [decorative] Libraries have long thrived on a culture of shared learning, where ideas are exchanged freely to strengthen services for all. Hoopla’s IDEA Squad<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> builds on this peer-to-peer foundation, creating a collaborative community of librarians dedicated to rethinking how digital collections support programming and outreach. IDEA stands for Inspire, Design, Execute, and Amplify, and the group’s purpose is simple: help libraries turn digital resources into active, visible extensions of the patron experience, which often begins in the physical space and expands into ongoing engagement beyond it. Currently made up of nine members, the IDEA Squad includes six librarians from across the United States, one librarian from Canada, and two members of the Hoopla team who are also librarians. This blend of perspectives ensures that every idea is grounded in real-world experience and shaped by those doing the work every day. Together, the group develops and shares practical content from webinars and blogs to program templates that libraries can immediately apply. Recent examples include a Sherlock Holmes-themed escape room<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> that connects teens to streaming content, custom digital carousels<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> that highlight community voices, and a summer reading webinar<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> filled with ready-to-use ideas for 2026. These approaches are especially impactful during summer reading. As families travel and routines shift, incorporating digital into programming and outreach ensures the library remains accessible anywhere. Whether embedding Hoopla titles<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> into reading lists or extending in branch programs with related digital content, libraries can create experiences that continue well beyond a single visit. This perspective came to life in a recent episode of The Straight Download,<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> which featured a conversation with IDEA Squad members Storm Hawthorne and Mandy Decker. Their conversation highlights a critical shift: When digital is intentionally incorporated into programming and outreach, it extends the in-person experience, creating ongoing value for patrons wherever they are. The IDEA Squad exists to turn these ideas into action. To explore how libraries are putting this into practice, check out their work and tune in to the latest episode of The Straight Download. Celebrating America250
by Anna Merritt 26 May '26

26 May '26

Hello All, Is anyone else having trouble navigating the America250 without bringing up politics or glossing over aspects of America's history...? Ideas for programs, displays, etc. seem to either 1.) Put out an uber-patriotic ideal or 2.) Invite debate about current events and politics... How can we find a balance between sugarcoating our nation's history and being to 'woke' for our more conservative patrons? All ideas and feedback are welcome. No judgment.
