📣 Exciting News: The Book & Author Society Grants Are Back!

Dear Michigan Library Community, For the first time since before 2020, the Book & Author Society is thrilled to announce the return of our grant program! Thanks to the incredible, ongoing support of our literary community through event ticket sales and generous donations, we are proud to introduce the brand-new Book & Author Society Collection Grant . What is the Collection Grant? The Book & Author Society will fund one $1,000 project annually to a public library in Michigan. This grant provides seed money for the creation or enhancement of a physical or digital circulating collection. The proposed project should fill a specific need, encourage patron use of your collections, and be thoughtfully curated for patrons of a variety of demographic backgrounds. Because only one grant will be awarded per year, we expect a highly competitive group of applicants and look forward to reading your innovative ideas! How to Apply: Applications will open on June 1, 2026, and will be collected via an online form. To give you a head start, here is exactly what you will need to prepare for your submission: * Project Proposal / Narrative (500 words max): A detailed description of the project's goals and objectives, and a discussion of the impact this collection will have on your community. * Demonstrated Financial Need (500 words max): A short description of how this grant will help fund a project that your library would not be able to pursue otherwise. * Detailed Budget (500 words max): An itemized list of materials/supplies and their intended use. (Please note: Grant funds cannot be used for staffing costs). * Supporting Documentation (Optional): You may upload files such as photos of your library space or sample titles to help the committee visualize your project. Note: The winning library will be required to report on the grant's impact by providing a short video or written paragraph for future promotional use. Important Dates to Remember: * June 1, 2026: The online application officially opens! * July 13, 2026: Application window closes. * August 3, 2026: The awardee will be contacted. * September 14, 2026: The grant will be officially presented at our upcoming Book & Author Event featuring Marjan Kamali! Everyone - We've got a bunch of great programs coming up here at the Dearborn Library. - Nobody likes making mistakes. Nobody. You don't want those mistakes to haunt your life going forward. Co-author Joshua Steiner will talk about his new book* From Mistakes to Meaning: Owning Your Past So It Doesn't Own You *(virtually tomorrow May 28 at 6:30pm) in which he tells how he got over his monumental mistake. - Do you have a Mac computer? Wondered how such a computer came to fruition? Journalist David Pogue will talk with us virtually regarding the first fifty years of Apple on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30pm. - Space exploration is back in the news with the recent trip of the Artemis II crew back and forth to the Moon. On Tuesday, June 9th at 6:30pm, journalist David Ariosto will join us virtually to talk about both the new Space Race and his new book *Open Space: From Earth to Eternity - the Global Race to Explore and Conquer the Cosmos*. - Historian Craig Fehrman will join us virtually on Wednesday, June 10th at 6:30pm to talk about his wonderful new and innovative history of the Lewis & Clark Expedition entitled *This Vast Enterprise*. A reminder that the due date for applications for the LM Improving Access to Information grant is this Friday, May 29th at 5:00 PM. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 / www.mi.gov/lsta<http://www.mi.gov/lsta> >>> The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce that the Improving Access to Information grant programs is open for 2026! This LSTA grant program is designed to provide public and academic libraries and library cooperatives with the opportunity to expand services for learning and access to information and/or to develop library services that provide all users access to information. The intent is to fund one-year projects that increase capacity to provide access to library collections and information for users. The expected focus will be the improvement in access to library users in one of the three priorities listed below and that align with the LSTA priorities listed in the grant documentation. Proposals that are collection requests do not fit the criteria. * Improve access to services & information in areas of literacy. * Improve access to services & information in areas of local history or special collections. * Improve access to information for community users with limited online access. The grant period is one year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30) and funding is from $5,000 to $25,000. Funding is by reimbursement only. Applications are due Friday, May 29th by 5:00 PM EST. Eligible applicants are Michigan public and academic libraries and library cooperatives. Public libraries must be legally established and eligible for state aid at the time of application. Academic libraries must be part of a public or non-profit college or university currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. A federal Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) number is required to apply. The grant program is competitive. The theme is Mythical Creatures, and the slogan is Libraries Are Legendary™. As we start work on creating artwork/selecting products for 2028, we are asking member libraries for feedback. This survey is open through June 7th, and we'd love for anyone in your library who has anything to do with summer to give their opinion! That includes youth and adult library staff, marketing folks, purchasing decision-makers, etc. Any and all feedback is welcome! [Several images of the Tooele City Library's Digby sculpture in different settings in the library.] Digby at the Tooele City Library This summer, staff at the Tooele City Library created a sculpture of Digby, the triceratops mascot invented for the 2026 CSLP Summer Reading program. Made with cardboard, insulation foam, papier-mache, and air-dry clay, Digby is almost two feet tall from nose to crest, and two feet long from nose to tail. He will be displayed at the front of the library throughout the Summer Reading program and will be featured in photos and videos posted on their social media accounts. Digby has been busy since his completion! He has spent time learning about library services and standards and is excited to share them. He is very excited to celebrate America 250™ and has a few patriotic costumes planned for later this summer. Hoopla’s IDEA Squad<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> builds on this peer-to-peer foundation, creating a collaborative community of librarians dedicated to rethinking how digital collections support programming and outreach. IDEA stands for Inspire, Design, Execute, and Amplify, and the group’s purpose is simple: help libraries turn digital resources into active, visible extensions of the patron experience, which often begins in the physical space and expands into ongoing engagement beyond it. Currently made up of nine members, the IDEA Squad includes six librarians from across the United States, one librarian from Canada, and two members of the Hoopla team who are also librarians. This blend of perspectives ensures that every idea is grounded in real-world experience and shaped by those doing the work every day. Together, the group develops and shares practical content from webinars and blogs to program templates that libraries can immediately apply.
