Invitation to Participate (Michigan Public Library Staff): Second Chance at the Library Research Study

Dear Colleagues, I would like to invite library professionals working at public libraries in Michigan to participate in the IMLS-funded Second Chance at the Library <https://www.michigansecondchance.com> research study (RE-254892-OLS-23). This study aims to investigate how services and programs offered by public library professionals may support the information needs and practices of formerly incarcerated individuals. I am also examining the training needs of public library staff who would like to better serve formerly incarcerated individuals in their communities. I am seeking volunteers who would like to share their experiences assisting patrons in connecting with social services and/or obtaining literacy and digital health literacy skills. Volunteers with experience developing and providing programming and/or services for formerly incarcerated individuals are preferred but not required. Participation involves a one-on-one interview (virtual or in-person) estimated to take 45-90 minutes. Each volunteer who completes an interview will receive a $30 visa gift card. Just a reminder that the Public Library Services grant program applications are due in a week and a half. The deadline is next Wednesday, March 25th at 5:00 PM. Applications are due March 25th at 5:00 PM. Highlights are below. We recommend reading the documentation thoroughly before applying as there are significant changes from the previous years. Public Library Services 2026 Grant program This LSTA grant program is designed to support public library programming in the areas of literacy, digital access, and/or local history. For 2026, the grant program will fund kits that circulate to the public. Some examples are family literacy outreach backpacks, robotics or electronics kits, digital conversion kits, laptops or family oral history kits. Materials are for circulating to the public but may be used in demonstrations when not in circulation.
