Presenter Recommendation: Gary Graff
by Mick Howey 07 Oct '26

07 Oct '26

Hello Michlib! On Monday BPL hosted long-time music critic Gary Graff and his program Essential Albums of the '80s & '90s. The program is an accompaniment to his books 501 Essential Albums of the '80s and 501 Essential Albums of the '90s and was excellent! Gary, and a panel of 8 other friends/contributors, discussed albums released during those eras that they thought were essential. Gary would ask a trivial question, the audience would respond with the answer, and then one of the panel would elaborate on the album. All of the panel contributed to Gary's books. The audience of 41 was lively and enjoyed the program. Gary and the panel were great- personable, humorous, knowledgeable, and engaging. Gary's contact info is below. His fee was $600. GoLM - Free 3D-printed assistive devices for your patrons: enroll your library in the GoLM Assistive Print Network (APN)
by matt.grayvin＠rhpl.org 07 Oct '26

07 Oct '26

Hello Michigan library colleagues, The Guild of Library Makers (GoLM) is launching a pilot program called the GoLM Assistive Print Network (APN). It gives library patrons across Michigan free 3D-printed assistive devices, such as bottle openers, button helpers, reading bars, and signature guides. We are inviting every Michigan library to enroll, and we would love for yours to be part of it. Why we are doing this Small, inexpensive tools can make everyday tasks much easier for people with limited hand strength or dexterity. Most libraries do not have a 3D printer or the staff time to make them. This program lets any library offer these devices to patrons at no cost and with very little staff effort. How it works for your library You do not need a 3D printer. When a patron wants a device, they choose one from our Device Catalog of 17 devices. Your staff submits the request to GoLM, and we route it to a Print Library. Novi Public Library is simply our pilot Print Library, and we chose to work with just one during the pilot to keep things simple. Novi prints the device and ships it to your library through RIDES. When it arrives, you notify the patron for pickup, just like an interlibrary loan hold. Every Access Library receives a full physical set of the devices in the catalog to show patrons. The Device Catalog itself is digital, and we recommend printing it at your library and keeping it next to the physical set so patrons can browse. Patrons can request one device per month. There is no fee for your library or your patrons. Interested in becoming a Print Library? Novi is our only Print Library during the pilot, but it will not be the only one forever. If your library has a 3D printer and would like to print for the network after the pilot, you can register as a Post-Pilot Print Library. You do not have to choose between the two roles. You can register as a Post-Pilot Print Library and also join as an Access Library right now, so your patrons can use the program during the pilot while you wait for Print Library enrollment to open. We will notify you when it does. How to enroll Fill out the Library Enrollment Form here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScC831vBl4OclfOn0x93DJ756hHruPxQEX… It takes just a few minutes. We will confirm your enrollment within 5 business days and send you a digital link to the APN folder, which holds all of your documents, including a staff guide, a patron handout, and the Device Catalog. We will also schedule a 1-on-1 introduction call with you to make sure we are all on the same page. Your feedback matters This is a pilot, so we need as much feedback as possible to make the program work for libraries across the state. Tell us what works and what does not, and we will keep improving it. Questions? Email guildoflibrarymakers(a)gmail.com. You can also learn more at guildoflibrarymakers.com. Thank you for all you do for your patrons and communities. Matt Grayvin Executive Director, The Guild of Library Makers guildoflibrarymakers(a)gmail.com | guildoflibrarymakers.com

by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 07 Oct '26

07 Oct '26

Hello! Below, please see information on a new Workplace Wellness webinar series from the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity(LEO). These webinars are free for all Michigan employers and recorded and posted for later viewing on LEO's website. [HWHM Banner] Building Healthier Workplaces: Leadership, Culture and Engagement This three-part webinar series explores practical strategies for strengthening leadership, workplace culture, safety and employee well-being. Creating a healthier, safer workplace takes more than policies and programs. This three-part webinar series explores how leadership, workplace culture and employee engagement can help organizations build lasting approaches to health, safety and well-being. Drawing on lessons from working with small businesses, the series will offer practical strategies leaders can use to strengthen workplace culture, develop leadership at every level and prepare for challenging situations, including workplace violence. [ewf] The series will be led by Dr. Natalie Schwatka, who has more than a decade of experience advancing the Total Worker Health® approach to protect and promote workers’ health, safety and well-being. Her research focuses on how leadership, business strategies and workplace culture can create healthier, safer workplaces, with extensive experience designing and evaluating leadership-based interventions. She is the Director of the NIOSH Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center (MAP ERC) Certificate in Total Worker Health® program, which provides scholarships for students seeking careers in the field. Within this program, she teaches students how to protect workers' physical and mental health on the job. She also works with national and federal organizations to strengthen organizational leadership and culture. [https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/MILEO/2020/03/3250…] Next Week: Thursday, Oct. 15 Episode 1: Beyond Policies - How Small Business Leaders Build Healthier, Safer Workplaces [fafre]<https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fteams.microsoft.com%2Fdl%2F…> Policies and programs are only part of the picture. Drawing on five years of work with nearly 100 employers and their teams, this webinar shares practical lessons on what actually drives employee engagement in health, safety, and well-being, especially the role leaders and workplace culture play. You'll leave with concrete ideas for assessing where your organization stands, setting realistic goals, and supporting your leaders (including their own well-being) as they champion a Total Worker Health® approach. Thursday, Oct. 15 2-2:30 p.m. [join the event button]<https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fteams.microsoft.com%2Fdl%2F…> [https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/MILEO/2020/03/3250…] Save the Dates for Future Webinars in This Series Episode 2: It Takes More Than One - Building Leadership at Every Level for Safety and Well-Being (Nov. 19) [ew4fasda] Our work with small businesses taught us an important lesson: one committed leader can't carry an organization's health and safety culture alone. This webinar introduces Built to Last, a toolkit that spreads leadership for safety, health, and mental health across owners, managers, frontline supervisors, and workers. You'll learn practical ways to grow leaders throughout your organization so your efforts last. Episode 3: Prepared Together - Leadership and Workforce Engagement for Workplace Violence (Dec. 17) [ewr] Workplace violence affects both physical safety and mental health, and those effects begin long before an incident and last long after it. This webinar applies the leadership and engagement lessons from earlier in the series to preparing for, responding to, and recovering from violence at work. Attendees will leave with practical strategies and resources they can put to use right away. Glitch in the Youth Employment Standards Act Work Permit Portal (YEPP Portal)
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 06 Oct '26

06 Oct '26

Hello! Public libraries looking to register in the Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) as part of the new YESA requirements for work permits may experience a delay in registering due to a glitch in the system relating to the wage questions . The system is erroneously asking for wage information for volunteers. LEO Wage and Hour are aware of the problem and are working to fix it. If you experience problems, use the help and technical assistance options in the YEPP portal. That way you will be directly notified by LEO when the issue is resolved. I will share any additional information I receive. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D.
