Celebrating 5 years of MiYouth!

Just a note that today, April 1, 2025, is our 5-year anniversary of the very first MiYouth meeting! We have come through a lot as a youth services community and I'm looking forward to connecting with you all next week. Please bring a fun prop (puppet, music maker, hat, etc) to share as we will celebrate 5 years of MiYouth together next week on Zoom. MiYouth MiYouth Meeting Tuesday, April 8, 2025 2:00 - 3:00 PM EST Join LM's Youth Services Advisory Council (YSAC) for networking and guided discussion. This April we will have the Library of Michigan's Library Grants Coordinator, Karren Reish, as one of our guests to share updates on the Institute of Museum and Library Services and a chance for you all to discuss the impact on youth services. We'll also hear from MDE's Summer Food Service Program on summer food and libraries, and Laura Warren-Gross will share tips on MeL. Plus, the YSAC Team will have more to share! MiYouth meets quarterly (months vary) on the 2nd Tuesday at 2pm. MiYouth meetings are open to all public library staff who work with youth in Michigan. Surplus Seeds to Give Away

A local farm store donated their surplus seeds to us at the end of the 2024 season. These are commercial seeds with a colored coating on them. I have the following available to give to other seed libraries: Lincoln Peas Little Marvel Peas Providence Corn Golden Nugget Corn Fordhook Lima Beans These will probably go fast, so if you are interested, please respond asap. A reminder to apply soon for the Public Library Management cohort. We will begin reviewing applications on Monday, April 7th. If you have any questions, please contact me. Karren Reish >>> The Library of Michigan is launching a public library management cohort for library staff with new middle management/supervisory duties. LM is working with Andrew Sanderbeck/PCI Webinars to provide an in-depth Public Library Management cohort of up to 60 public library staff members, 30 in a Middle Management track and 30 in New Supervisors track. The cohort groups will meet at least monthly from May through September. The project includes coursework, online meetings, and 2 in-person workshop days in Lansing. The application will close on April 4th April 7th so apply soon! The Middle Management track includes competencies to help attendees better manage themselves and others, including their bosses. Topic areas will include personal organizational skills including decision making and time management skills: one to one and team communication skills including difficult conversations and managing situations of conflict; process breakdowns and problem solving and influencing others without the authority to manage them. The New Supervisors track consists of topics on effectively communicating with others including giving constructive feedback and managing situations of conflict. We will practice situations of coaching and managing our employees, get more comfortable with delegating to others and building relationships with others including our boss. Attendees will also sharpen personal organizational skills including decision making and time management.
