*Have you led trainings about online safety at a library before?* Hello, we are looking for librarians who have taught their patrons about online safety topics, particularly related to privacy and security. Dr. Florian Schaub and PhD student Tanisha Afnan from the University of Michigan would love to learn from your experiences with you, and other librarians, in a small group setting! You will receive $120 for participating completely in our study. Participants in this study will have a chance to connect with other librarians doing similar work. The online half-day workshop will walk through a series of hands-on activities including: - Guided conversations with you and other librarians to share your unique experiences with teaching for online safety within a library setting - Identify promising directions for new educational resources that can support independent patron learning on relevant online safety, privacy, and security topics beyond the library - Develop action plans to reflect on key assets and partners available to you in supporting your work All of your information will be anonymized and stored securely if you choose to participate, and our study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Michigan IRB. Key Points for Earned Sick Time * Frontloading Paid Sick Time: As an alternative to the accrual method, employers can choose to frontload at least 72 hours of paid sick time for immediate use each year, or 40 for a small business, which eliminates the requirement for carryover or accrual tracking for full-time employees. * Frontloading Part-time Employees: As an alternative to the accrual method, employers may frontload paid sick time for part-time employees as well, with a prorated amount, subject to specific notice and true-up requirements. * Accrual Method: If choosing the accrual method, employees accrue 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, and unused paid sick time rolls over up to 72 hours. Employers may limit the use of earned sick time to 72 hours, or 40 for a small business, in the 12-month period. * New Hire Waiting Period: If using the accrual method, employers may have a policy for new employees hired on or after 2/21/25 requiring these employees to wait up to 120 days before using accrued sick time. Employees accrue earned sick time during this waiting period. If frontloading, hours are available for immediate use. * Small Business Compliance: Small business is defined as an employer having 10 or fewer employees. Small businesses have until October 1, 2025, to comply with ESTA requirements. * PTO Policy: Employers can use a combined paid time off (PTO) policy to meet ESTA requirements, as long as the total paid leave meets or exceeds the necessary amounts and may be used for the same purposes. * Hourly Rate: For ESTA purposes, an employee's hourly rate is their normal hourly wage or base rate and excludes overtime, holiday pay, bonuses, commissions, tips, etc. * Enforcement: The Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) is responsible for enforcing ESTA. * Sick Time Increments: Employers may choose to use either one-hour increments or the smallest increment for tracking sick time usage. Patron returns cigarette smoke-tinged books; consequences?

Hello all, A patron returned five books today that smell pretty smoky. This is the third time in a few months. There's nothing in our policy that deals with this directly. A circulation policy states: Materials damaged or lost by a patron must be replaced by the patron. Have you dealt with this before? Have you talked to the patron, which I will do; and when, if you do so, do you declare the item damaged and the patron responsible for paying for the item/s? Libraries and the Summer Food Service Program (SUN Meals/SFSP): 2025 update

Cross-posted. Please excuse duplication. Does your library serve summer meals or snacks, or are you interested in being a meal site or supporting other meal sites in your area? Many libraries in Michigan and around the USA participate in the Summer Food Service Program<https://www.fns.usda.gov/summer/sunmeals> (SFSP, now branded as SUN Meals), a USDA-funded program that provides free meals and snacks to children ages 0-18 in communities with high levels of need. Libraries and SFSP are a great fit.<https://www.cslpreads.org/libraries-and-summer-food/> The library is a trusted, accessible community center and very well experienced in providing free services. Libraries are also justly famous for drop-in enrichment programming, which increases the appeal and use of SFSP sites. SFSP is good for the library too. Besides the obvious benefits of addressing hunger and supporting vulnerable youth, participation gives libraries: * Access to new user groups, especially underserved and marginalized populations * Increased visibility of the library as a community asset * Opportunities for new partnerships * Positioning of the library as an important stakeholder in community well-being and positive child outcomes * Support for summer library programming through increased attendance Beginning in 2024, SUN Meals sites in low-income rural areas can distribute meals and snacks for offsite consumption (grab-and-go). This service model, called SUN Meals To-Go, is intended to reduce barriers for children, teens, and families in rural areas to access healthy meals and snacks. The USDA is using a broad definition of rural, so note that not all areas designated rural are SFSP-eligible; there remains an area income eligibility requirement. You may look up your locations on the USDA rural designation page<https://www.fns.usda.gov/sfsp/rural-designation> and see the new rural definition overlaid with area eligibility on the No Kid Hungry Summer Eligibility Map.<https://bestpractices.nokidhungry.org/Summer-Meals-Eligibility-Map> Interested in serving summer meals or snacks in 2025? * If you are already a SUN Meals site (or have been a site in the past), work with your regular sponsor to prepare for summer 2025. If your location is designated rural by the USDA, ask your sponsor about the SUN Meals To-Go non-congregate option. * If you want to become a SUN Meals site*, first find out if you are in an eligible area. Eligibility is based on the economic conditions of a geographic area, measured by school data or census data. Use the USDA's Capacity Builder Map<https://www.fns.usda.gov/sfsp/capacitybuilder> to see if you are in an eligible area. When the map loads, scroll down and select "FY2025 FNS SFSP CACFP Eligibility." Sponsors may contract with food service providers and do not have to prepare the food themselves. Sponsors are reimbursed for all expenses by the USDA. A few libraries are sponsors as well as sites.
