Hello: We just added a water bath canner to our Library of Things so patrons can make jams and can their vegetables. Does anyone else offer this? If so, do you add a warning note with it or any special instructions? Thanks!

The onboarding of a new employee can and should be SO much more than signing paperwork and one week of training. By viewing onboarding as a process over time and planning with purpose, libraries and other workplaces can create positive experiences that lead to more satisfied staff and higher retention. Library staff from all library types and roles are invited to a Virtual Dialogue on Thursday, Sept. 19, 10:30 a.m. to noon Eastern (9:30-11 a.m. Central). The MCLS Engagement, Consulting, and Training Team will guide a conversation about intentionality in staff onboarding. This is NOT a webinar, but rather a chance to come together with other library staff from across our two-state region to share your strategies, insights, and experiences with each other. Do you believe in the healing power of reading? Is your library an innovator in these domains? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we want to hear from you! We invite applications<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/lacl.missouri.edu/index.php/apply/__;!!E…> from public library workers and administrators who are interested in participating in an IMLS-funded national forum (Grant #RE-256563-OLS-24), Libraries Advancing Community Learning to Reduce Substance Use (LACL)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/lacl.missouri.edu/__;!!EErPFA7f--AJOw!Bl…>, which will be held both online and on-site at the Kansas City Public Library on May 15 and 16, 2025. Experts in the library and substance abuse recovery fields will engage participants to envision and create support for people experiencing alcohol use disorder (AUD) and/or substance use disorder (SUD) through reading, bibliotherapy, and peer-to-peer learning circles. Guided breakout discussion sessions will provide opportunities for participants to share knowledge and develop resources to: * facilitate social connections * develop working relationships and partnerships with professionals in the recovery field * recommend therapeutic uses of literature and provide support for reading groups focusing on AUD and/or SUD * support library staff suffering from AUD and/or SUD and secondary trauma * apply effective marketing and outreach tactics that reach people who will benefit from these efforts. The forum will provide the basis for an openly available online toolkit that can be used in public libraries. Selected participants will be able to participate on-site. All on-site participants will expected to actively participate in discussions and contribute to the toolkit. They will be provided with travel, two nights' accommodation at a hotel near the event space, and a stipend for meals not included at the conference. Any library staff member who wishes to learn and contribute to the event can attend the online sessions for free and will be invited to provide feedback on the preliminary materials. Opportunity: The Millington Arbela District Library is a Class III library serving a population of over 7,000 in the Village of Millington and Millington and Arbela Townships. Millington is a charming rural community located in the Thumb of Michigan yet conveniently located to thenearby cities of Frankenmuth, Birch Run, Saginaw, Flint, and Bay City. The Southern Links Trailway trail head is located two blocks from the library and brings a variety of recreational opportunities. The Village and surrounding areas have many quaint antique shops, local eateries, parks and hosts many community events, including The Millington Summer Festival and Christmas in the Village. The library is open 57 hours, six days a week with a staff of nineand an approximate annual budget of $330,000. The Millington Arbela District Library is a member of the White Pine Library Cooperative. The Board is seeking a dynamic, positive individual to lead the library. The successful candidate will be a “hands-on” administrator, be visible in the library and in the community, have a vision for library service, and have the ability to articulate that vision to the Board, the staff, and the public. Candidates will have strong technology skills and a vision for the use of technology in providing library services, be an excellent communicator, and have experience in managing and directing employees. Key Expectations: The Library Director serves as the executive officer of the library, reporting directly to the Board of Trustees. The Director is responsible for all library functions, including: • Day to day operations • Delivery of library services and programing • Strategic planning, technology, and budgeting • Supervision and management functions • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with community leaders, public officials, professional groups, library employees and the general public. Essential Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree plus 2-3 years of library experience in an increasingly responsible supervisory and/or administrative position • Have completed or have the ability to obtain a Level 3 certification from the Library of Michigan within 1 year of hire date • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with staff, patrons, vendors, and trustees Desired Qualifications: • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree • Long range and strategic planning experience • A working knowledge of budget preparation, use of QuickBooks software, grant writing and fundraising. Salary and Benefits: Starting Salary Range: $55,000-$60,000 based on qualifications and experience. Benefit package includes paid holidays, vacation, personal days, health insurance and MERS retirement.
