Program Recommendation: Laurel Day and Charcuterie

Good morning everyone, Last week, Comstock Township Library hosted Laurel Day, AKA the Do Something Lady, for a program on how to make a beautiful charcuterie board for Valentine's Day. Not only was Miss Day bubbly and a wonderful person to speak with, she was knowledgeable and a pleasure to watch. She showed us techniques for presenting different selected items, how to go about selecting items, and more. Plus by the end, everyone was stuffed! MLA Conference Silent Auction

Dear Michigan Library members, I know it is a way off, but I wanted to put the word out that we are doing the Silent Auction fundraiser for MLA again at this year's conference at the Traverse Resort. The money we raise from the auction goes to help support libraries in Michigan dealing with Intellectual Freedom challenges, as well as the Scholarship Fund to help address our DEI initiatives. For the past two conferences, the auction has raised over $3,000 in funds to help support advocacy, DEI, and Intellectual Freedom for the libraries in our state. This year we are asking for donations from all of our libraries such as gift baskets, gift certificates, things uniquely themed for your area; as well as, a variety of items or adventures you may have, such as boat tours, overnight stays, sports events, movie tickets, dinners at your local restaurants - items that tie into this year's theme of fun, moving forward, and self-care. Even if you have smaller items, please consider donating. I am happy to put them together with other small items to make a whole basket. All money raised goes to help Michigan libraries and librarians through the efforts of the Michigan Library Association. Chief Executive Officer - Eastern Shore Regional Library (MD) The Eastern Shore Regional Library (MD)<https://esrl.org/> Board of Trustees seeks a Chief Executive Officer to collaboratively lead the forward-thinking organization which serves and supports eight county library systems on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Reporting to an eleven-member board representing the areas served, the Chief Executive Officer will work with sixteen FTEs at a newly renovated office in Salisbury, Maryland to responsively provide library support services to member county library systems. Services include materials delivery; electronic database and digital content management; IT consulting, support, and consortia purchasing; professional development and training opportunities; and facilitating the Grants to Libraries Program. Key initiatives include analysis of the organization's current integrated library system contract, determining the best way to balance digital resources for the members, and identifying and supporting the needs of libraries served by the organization. The Eastern Shore Region, located between the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, is home to beautiful beaches and waterways, and offers cultural experiences within a short drive to Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Richmond. Outdoor activities throughout the region highlight an untouched landscape and provide access to boating, birding, biking, and hiking trails. The Eastern Shore's history includes being home to Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Numerous historical trails, driving tours and the Harriet Tubman Museum Center honor their experiences and contributions to free enslaved people. The Chesapeake County All-American Road journeys through Wicomico County and Pemberton Historical Park. Salisbury boasts plenty of fun things to see and do, including the Salisbury Zoo, public art, and historical walking tours. The Eastern Shore also hosts unique seasonal festivals highlighting authentic coastal cuisine along Maryland's Crab and Oyster Trail. Responsibilities: The CEO will be responsible for strategic planning, budget preparation and management, research and evaluation of services, personnel management, collection development, managing positive customer relationships, and facility maintenance. The ideal candidate will lay the foundation for future success through assessment and maintenance of current services, strategizing towards implementation of forthcoming services, while building rapport with key stakeholders. Qualifications: A master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, ten years of progressively responsible library experience with at least five years of public library service are required. Navigating Material Challenges for Library Trustees Thursday, February 15, 2024 6:00 - 7:15 PM MLA is working alongside the Michigan Cooperative Director's Association to host a virtual trustee training event on Thursday, February 15 from 6:00 - 7:15 PM. This event is free to attend! As libraries in Michigan and around the country grapple with an unprecedented number of book bans and challenges, this event will help orient library trustees to their role and responsibilities when it comes to material challenges.
