Position: Youth Librarian (Part-time) Reports to: Youth Coordinator Pay: $19.00 per hour Benefits: 3 personal days, pro-rated paid holidays and a 457 plan after 1st year. Hours: Up to 28 hours per week, includes days/evenings and rotating weekends. The AHPL is seeking an enthusiastic candidate to join our Youth Services team. Qualifications: · Masters in Library Science from an accredited institution or near completion required. · Experience working in a public library. · Experience working with youth including outreach to schools desired. · Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to work independently. · Proficiency with emerging technology. · Ability to maintain effective relationships with staff, and work in a team environment. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. · Successfully pass a background check & pre-employment screening Primary Job Duties: · Emphasis on service, with strong ability to communicate effectively. · Assist library users at the Youth Services Desk. · Develops and implements creative programs and services for youth · Shares the responsibility for displays and bulletin boards in the youth area. · May attend relevant workshops and meetings. · Perform other duties as assigned by the Youth Services Coordinator Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, bend, and/or walk for extended periods of time. Must be able to reach, and carry books or boxes of books, push book carts, use the telephone, lift, push, pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Good Afternoon All, Since the departure of a staff member, I've taken a look at the backend of our website, and it's an utter mess. So many Frankensteined plug-ins, old pages, etc. In attempting to clean things up, I've also discovered that our theme is hard to edit and just not ideal. I plan to revamp the site, and am wondering if anybody has recommendations for a new theme in Wordpress that they find aesthetically pleasing and easy to edit. Any helpful tips or tricks are welcome; it's been a few years since I've done this kind of deep dive on transforming a website. The Historical Society of Michigan hosts monthly History Skills Workshops, and this months might be of interest to library staff. Larissa Nuñez, guest services and volunteer coordinator at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, will be presenting on volunteer management. Volunteers are often an integral part of library staffing, but it can be tricky to get the help you need when folks are so busy. Come learn how to attract, train, manage, and reward the people who offer to help your organization. This virtual workshop takes place on Monday, August 28, from 9am to noon. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan >>> The 3rd Round of the Public Library Financial Management Cohort is open! The first two cohorts have been a great success, thanks in large part to the great work by the participants. If you have managerial financial responsibilities and want to learn more about public library financial management, please review the information below and sign up! The Library of Michigan works to provide library specific administrative training for public library staff. As part of this goal, LM is working with the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government to provide a public library financial management certificate program for a cohort of up to 30 public library staff members. Recommended participants are public library directors, budget administrators, and other public library staff with managerial financial management responsibilities. The cohort is a one-year series of classes focused on governmental financial accounting and policy development. The cohort does not include software or basic accounting instruction. The 3rd Cohort group timeline is October 2023 through September 2024. The Library Financial Management Certification Program includes six online courses: * Budgeting for Libraries * Purchasing * Governmental Accounting for Libraries * Internal Control for Libraries * Payroll Administration * Writing Financial Policies The Library of Michigan is underwriting the program costs. Technology Policy

Hello all, we are a class 4 library in rural Michigan, serving just over 12,000 individuals. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their technology policy, specifically if it has a section addressing minor use and violation protocol. We have had issues recently with minors violating our overall policy, but no policy guidelines for minors who violate the it and no specific guidelines for minor use. Thank you in advanced! The U-M School of Information and the Michigan Library Association are co-sponsoring PUBLIC LIBRARIANSHIP IN CONTENTIOUS TIMES, a day of expert presentations, conversation, and activity around the First Amendment. Since COVID-19, outside groups – often well-funded and formed online – have mobilized to demand the removal of library books whose characters, plots, biographies, or information do not agree with their individual beliefs. These demands for libraries to bypass First Amendment rights are causing unprecedented friction for a profession whose core beliefs include access for all and collections that represent a wide range of perspectives and human experiences. In this daylong conference, we’ll hear from experts on online communities, social media policies for public institutions, and online privacy and security. You’ll learn more about the resources available to libraries – from toolkits to public opinion surveys - from the Michigan Library Association. You’ll gain insight about how you can find calm and empowerment as you work to maintain First Amendment rights for all in your community. And you’ll have time to talk with other public librarians and those who care about access to information.
