Staff Spotlight: Alyssa Graybeal, CSLP Managing Editor Alyssa has worked on the CSLP manual since 2018, and she became a part-time employee in 2021. After finishing her MLIS (2011) from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Alyssa worked in information literacy and digital archives until her health required that she work from home. She then returned to her pre-library school career of editing and back-of-the-book indexing. CSLP brought her back into the library world. "I love that I get to combine both library and editing experience in one job," she says.[https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/_compresseds/fca6… Alyssa is also an award-winning author and cartoonist. Her work primarily explores the emotional landscape of chronic illness and disability, which she says can be funnier than it sounds. Her memoir, Floppy: Tales of a Genetic Freak of Nature at the End of the World, was published in May 2023 by Red Hen Press. It is one of the first books about living with the connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome from a patient's perspective. Floppy was recommended by Library Journal and Booklist, and was recently featured by the American Bookseller's Association for Disability Pride Month (July 2023). Outside of CSLP, Alyssa works as a writing coach and developmental editor for authors of creative nonfiction. Read to Grow Trees at the Brandon Township Public Library >From Laura Fromwiller, Director The Brandon Township Public Library in Ortonville, MI is on a mission to add trees to our local park! Through a collaboration with our township's Parks and Recreation department, library patrons are actively reading for a good cause. For every 20 minutes patrons read, they fill in a leaf on their Read to Grow Trees Tracker. Once they fill in 15 leaves they turn in the card for a leaf to write their name on and add to our goal tree wall. For every 100 leaves, the library will donate one tree. The more patrons read, the more trees we plant! Brandon Township is fortunate to have a beautiful park that contains a Living Tree Library that was started back in 2006. Since then, through grants and donations it has grown to 9 acres and over 200 trees with a 1/3 mile sidewalk to enjoy. With financial support from the Friends of the Brandon Township Public Library, 5 different species of trees will be planted in the tree library to commemorate the 150,000 minutes of reading accomplished by our patrons. Requirements Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties as assigned: * Writes and proofreads Library event print and digital information. * Reserves meeting rooms for outside organizations in the events database, and handles all correspondence associated with room bookings. * Assists in maintaining current event information on the AADL website, both for external promotion and internal set-up and payment needs, with a strong attention to detail. * Assists with the logistics and organization of AADL public events including speaker payments, room set-up information, hotel and travel arrangements, scheduling local booksellers for author events, arranging for catering for receptions, and other event details. * Assists AADL staff with planning and scheduling of public events. * Maintains statistics related to Library programming efforts. * Creates events for the community, and serves as a host for these events and other events created by AADL staff, especially those events that center traditionally underserved audiences. * Assists with the coordination of the AADL summer game shop, prize distribution, and event codes. * Assists with planning large, special events in collaboration with other library staff. * Serves on departmental and system-wide teams and delivers related action items on schedule. Minimum Qualifications include: * Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two year’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong editing, grammar, and proofreading skills. * Ability to organize work, set priorities and handle multiple tasks while maintaining strong attention to detail. Must be flexible and willing to work in situations with multiple deadlines. * Skilled in utilizing a variety of office software applications (including database and Microsoft Office applications). * One to two years’ experience providing direct customer service. * Experience blogging and contributing to an Online Content Management System. * Positive attitude and strong public service commitment. * Strong interpersonal and team player skills. Preferred Qualifications include: * Successful experience providing direct customer service in a public library setting. * Proven experience hosting events for all ages. * Fluency in one or more non-English languages. * Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in English, journalism or a related field. Language Exchange Program

Hello all: Has anyone set up a successful language exchange/language buddy program at your library, where native English speakers can connect with speakers of another language so each can help the other improve? I've had a few patrons ask that we set up a program like this, so I'd love any advice/insight on logistics. social media comments

Hello. Has anyone taken steps to limit or disable comments from the public on their library social media accounts? Unless I'm missing something, Meta doesn't really allow users to disable comments completely on Facebook or Instagram. You can partially (Facebook) or completely (Insta) shut them down on individual posts, but only after they have been posted, not when they are scheduled in Meta Business Suite. This, in typical Meta fashion, seems extremely user un-friendly. We've been leaning toward shutting down comments down due to the rising tensions in social media, but this would make it nearly impossible to schedule posts in advance. Has anyone found a way around this or is there a trick within Meta platforms that I've missed? Dear Michlib-L and TLN (please excuse cross-posting), You are invited to attend TLN Adult Services Committee's Presenter Showcase (for planning future events for adults) and it is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 4 from 10 AM - 1 PM on Zoom. I am in the process of scheduling presenters that were recommended by you and our peers on the No Reservations Recommendations website <https://nrr.ninja/>, the TLN ASC programming Google Sheet, the survey I recently emailed out, or through Michlib-L in the past year or so. We will have a large group of performers and presenters who can run programs in-person or virtually, from within and outside of Michigan. Registration will be required through The Library Network website and will open about a month in advance of the event date so look for an email from me sometime in November. I wanted to be sure to share this far enough in advance: please save the date and ask for permission to be excused from desk duties to attend should programming apply to you. I'll be sending another reminder a month or so out from the date to invite you to officially register for the Zoom login. If you are part of another consortium that is not TLN, please consider sharing this on your respective listservs to help other librarians with programming inspo. Teen/Adult crossover programming

Hi all, If your library provides teen/adult crossover programming to your community, I am curious how are you counting those stats? * Do you use a different category for crossover events: all ages, multi-aged programs, family? * Are you counting by the attendees = 5 teens, 8 adults and divide those between teen/adult stats. We are interested in doing more of this type of programming, the teens seem to enjoy being lumped in with the adults for a handful of programming types (crafting and events that are fandom focused . As we look to next year's state aid stats tracking spreadsheets, I'm just thinking about how we track those programs... and how to make sure we're not double reporting.
