The Trustee Training workshop with Clare Membiela abd Joe Hamlin, which will be held at Bayliss Public Library on September 13th, is a Library of Michigan Training, and therefore no cost is associated with attending. It is geared specifically for Trustees to network with other Trustees in the UP and Northern Michigan area, although all Trustees may attend if they wish. CIRCULATION ASSISTANT CPL is a dynamic library with a diverse patron base and a friendly staff. We are seeking a Circulation Assistant who enjoys being busy, and likes working with a variety of audiences. Circulation Assistants primarily work at our Main Check Out Desk, issuing library cards and handling patron questions about their card account and library services. POSITION SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Circulation Services Supervisor, the Circulation Assistant provides direct and indirect services to library patrons. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours. This is a regular part-time position and is non-exempt from overtime under FLSA guidelines. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Responds to patron questions regarding their library account. * Refers patron queries and issues beyond their scope of authority to the Circulation Services Supervisor, Department Head or Director. * Responsible for issuing and renewing library cards according to established policies; accurately and efficiently checks out materials to qualified cardholders. * Alerts patrons of fees and other charges to their account; processes payments for such according to established procedures. * Accurately and efficiently checks in returned materials. * Reviews returned materials for completeness and condition. * Follows up with patrons who have returned incomplete or damaged items. * Resolves exceptions according to established practices and procedures. * Responsible for generating and transmitting library overdue notices and bills, and updating patron records with hold or fee information. * Responsible for maintenance of the Hold Shelf, including use of the library's automation system to run required hold reports. * Assists patrons in the use of self-check stations and equipment, including the purchase, reloading and use of prepaid copy cards. * Responds to gate alarm when it sounds. * Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach. * Writes detailed, clear and concise incident reports, obtaining case numbers in the event of police involvement. * Supports Community Relations or Building Monitor with patron interactions regarding meeting room reservations. * Assist with programs and outreach, including set-up, clean-up, manning stations and general assistance as assigned. * Maintains neat and orderly library appearance throughout each shift. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES * Assists in other Circulation Services workgroups as directed. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. * Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. Serves on workgroups/committees and participates in initiatives as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Basic knowledge typically associated with the completion of a high school diploma. * High-level verbal and written communication skills; ability to deliver tactful and decisive explanations to an audience not always receptive to the information being communicated. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Ability to work effectively with a diverse public; including children and teenagers. * Ability to effectively exercise initiative and independent judgment, and assume responsibility without close supervision. * Ability to maintain discretion in handling confidential library matters. * Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and common office equipment, cash register and credit card equipment. * Efficient and accurate keyboarding and data entry. * Punctuality and dependability. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service experience. * Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Sierra automation system. * Knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to the privacy rights of patrons. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 40 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, and shelve materials and read small print on labels. * Ability to efficiently review, comprehend and produce a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, in writing and verbally. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. Draft Digital Equity Plan from the Michigan High Speed Internet Office (MiHI)

Hello Everyone, As I mentioned during the monthly Library Directors meeting last week Friday, the Michigan High Speed Internet Office (MiHI) is asking all public libraries to make a printed copy as well as a link to the draft Digital Equity Plan available to the public. The Library of Michigan has been involved in various roundtable discussions and individual meetings about the need for affordable access to high-quality broadband internet along with appropriate digital literacy skills for over 2 years now. The team at MiHI is well aware of and appreciative of the role libraries have and continue to play in their respective communities. Public libraries are mentioned throughout the draft plan and are considered to be a vital asset to achieving the vision of having a state in which all people have access to affordable internet, devices, and the ability to utilize those tools to ensure a better life for themselves and their families. Here's how you can continue partnering with MIHI on reaching out to your respective communities to ensure digital inclusion and equity in Michigan: 1. Print off a copy of the draft Digital Equity Plan found here<https://www.michigan.gov/leo/-/media/Project/Websites/leo/Documents/MIHI/DE…>. Make it available for public viewing within the library and encourage people to read & comment. 2. Post the link of the draft Digital Equity Plan on your website and your social media accounts asking for people to offer public comment. Hello - the Library of Michigan has free materials we are offering to the library community. To take advantage of this opportunity, see the information below and the attached spreadsheet. Feel free to forward this message to other library groups or listservs within Michigan. Content and condition The titles listed are extra copies of fiction and non-fiction (hard and soft cover) books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last year and either contain Michigan content and/or were written by a Michigan author. Also available are new and used Michigan government documents (on the second sheet of the document), items weeded from our collections, and donated materials we cannot use. Most of the non-MNB items are old library books and come with library markings/stickers, but are otherwise in the condition noted on the spreadsheet. If you'd like to only consider the newer books, you can either sort by condition or publication year. How to request Please submit requests by email to baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> . If you are local or passing through, you are welcome to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 9am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Some, or all requested materials may no longer be available at the point we receive your email. Rock Snakes

Has anyone else's outdoor painted rock snake gone missing while the library was closed? We had a 30 rock long snake made at a summer reading event and today all that is left is the head and two rocks. Just wondering if this is localized vandalism or a "thing." Thanks! This half-day pre-session begins with lunch from Wicked Sister, provided by the Bayliss Friends of the Library, followed by the UPRLC Board meeting. At two o'clock, we will split into two sessions. One will be geared towards Trustee Training with Clare. The other will be a Team-Building workshop with Scott Garrison from MCLS. Programming - how much is too much?

Hi all, Do you have a method for figuring out how many programs you are targeting in a certain period of time? We’re having a cheerful(ish) debate on our staff regarding how much programming is too much… and it seems to me that this all falls back on how many staff hours we have to devote to programming.
