The project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, gives teens the chance to build positive mental health practices and bring those to the design and development of mental health-based VR experiences. MCLS Receives IMLS Grant to Fund Digital Preservation

**Please excuse cross-posting.** [MCLS logo]<https://www.mcls.org/> [Michigan Digital Preservation Network logo] <http://www.mipres.org/> NEWS RELEASE MCLS Receives IMLS Grant to Fund Digital Preservation LANSING, MI—The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) has been awarded a 2022 National Leadership Grant for Libraries<https://imls.gov/news/imls-announces-21-million-investment-us-library-and-a…> from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The $242,351 grant will further develop and expand capacity for the Michigan Digital Preservation Network (MDPN) through a first-of-its-kind digital preservation system. The MDPN, a member-governed, collaborative organization dedicated to preserving Michigan’s digital cultural heritage, has been a program of MCLS since 2020. “IMLS’s grant award will certainly further our goal to bring innovative digital preservation services to a variety of cultural memory institutions throughout Michigan. We believe the MDPN’s work to date has begun to establish an important foundation for others to build on, and we truly appreciate IMLS’s support to continue that work,” notes MCLS Executive Director Scott Garrison. National Leadership Grants for Libraries are awarded annually to projects of national impact that address significant challenges and opportunities facing the library and archives fields. The project must have the potential to advance theory and practice with new tools, research findings, models, services, practices, or alliances that will be widely used. MCLS’s project is one of 39 that IMLS funded in 2022. The MDPN’s project will build one of the first production-scale digital preservation networks using newly developed software from the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) Program at Stanford University. This new LAAWS (LOCKSS Architected as a Web Service) software, paired with other tools that promote ease-of-use and accessibility, will ultimately make digital preservation easier for small and under-resourced institutions with little to no technical expertise. “Digital preservation shouldn’t be reserved for the institutions with the most money or the best-trained staff. Local historical societies and community archives and museums – many of which share space with their local public libraries – often steward the most unique, one-of-a-kind collections and artifacts,” says MDPN Coordinator Dr. Chelsea Denault. “But for many reasons, these institutions often don’t have the skills or support they need to do robust digital preservation to keep these valuable resources safe. Working with our partners at the Library of Michigan and the DPLA Michigan Service Hub to digitize these items and make them accessible via the Web, the MDPN will use these funds from IMLS to scale up our network in order to bring accessible and affordable digital preservation to cultural memory institutions of all types in Michigan.” About MCLS MCLS is a member-owned and governed non-profit dedicated to serving libraries of all types and sizes in Indiana and Michigan. Event at Brandon Twp Library: Michigan Beer: A Heady History

Hello everyone! The Brandon Township Public Library is holding a program with Michigan author Patti Smith and the history of beer in our state. You do not need to be a BTPL patron to attend, so please feel free to share with your staff and patrons. *Michigan Beer: A Heady History* Join local author Patti F. Smith During her interactive presentation in which she will entertain with stories from local brewers and tell how early immigrants brought their distinctive beer styles from their home countries, how early local brewers made their mark in beer, and how the brewing industry consolidated after World War II. Along the way, participants will discover different styles of beer from ales to lagers and learn about the current state of local craft breweries. Virtual Tours for Libraries

Hi everyone, Hope you're having a wonderful week! At Capital Area District Libraries, accessibility and inclusion initiatives for our libraries is one of our top priorities. One of the programs we participate in is Able Eyes<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__streaklinks.com_BJh0cW…>. They've provided virtual walk-thru tours of our CADL libraries to help visitors with physical and/or invisible disabilities view and explore our libraries beforehand to decrease anxiety and see our physical spaces. The tours are available on the Able Eyes website<https://www.ableeyes.org/>/app, plus we have the tours on our website and Google Business listing for all visitors of all abilities to view. It's been a great program with exceptional marketing perks that is helping individuals and families feel comfortable in our spaces. There is a cost for the filming and hosting. It's based on the square footage of the library. Question about virtual presenters from foreign countries

Hi, All - I'm wondering how to pay a foreign presenter to do a virtual presentation via Zoom? For example, when you want to hire a presenter from Norway to present via Zoom and they have a speaker fee. For our in-person presenters, we collect W-9 information in case we need to send them a 1099. How would this work with someone out of the country who doesn't have a U.S. Social Security number or tax ID? If you have any experience with this, please let me know how you handled it.
