Hello Michlib-I, Please join us at 6:30 PM on Monday, April 25, 2022 for The Legacy and Memory of Emmett Louis Till: A Story of Geography, History and Racism. Event description is below: The story of Emmett Till was silenced for over 50 years after his brutal murder on August 28, 1955. Since 2005, new information has been discovered about what really took place after Emmett made the famous whistle to Caroline Bryant after purchasing candy at Bryant’s Grocery in Money, Mississippi. Presenter Jim Herm will share his research into the post-Civil War South, the legacy of Emmett Till, and the start of the Civil Rights movement. Jim Herm is a resident of Otsego, Michigan and a retired Portage Public School history teacher and counselor. He has visited many of the recently opened historical sites that will be discussed in his presentation, which is intended for listeners 15 and up. Note: This event will be both in person at the Library and virtually via Zoom. Please indicate your preference by selecting the ticket type you wish to attend. The CSLP theme/slogan committee has compiled a list of your 2026 theme and 2025 slogan suggestions. Thank you for all the wonderful theme and slogan ideas! Calling All MeL Mavens!

Congratulations to library staff who completed the MeL Maven training! If you are among the newly minted MeL Mavens, take some time to celebrate your accomplishment. I also have another favor to ask of you. If you finished five modules, but opted not to click through to the screen that showed your certificate, would you please take a moment to do so? In reviewing our stats, we noticed the individuals who clicked all the way through the training are the only ones credited with completing the program. We want everyone to be given the credit they deserve and for our data to be accurate. Thanks so much for double-checking and helping us out. For those of you who have either never started MeL Maven training or have yet to complete it, please consider doing so. Lakeland Library Cooperative in Grand Rapids, Michigan is pleased to announce a new position, Member Services Manager that we would like to fill very quickly so this person can be part of our new strategic planning process. Do you want to join an enthusiastic and dedicated team that supports and serves a 42-member public library cooperative covering 8 West Michigan counties? The Lakeland Library Cooperative in Grand Rapids is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the new role of Member Services Manager. The Member Services Manager will have a broad understanding of and commitment to public libraries, their staff members, and the patrons they serve. This individual must have the ability to communicate effectively in both large and small group settings and provide support and assistance to the cooperative membership. A focus on outreach, technology, training, and advocacy is essential. This position reports to the Cooperative Director. This individual will work with front line and support staff in youth, adult and circulation services, provide training, resources and support, This position reports to the Cooperative Director and works closely with Lakeland staff and library staff members. The salary range for this exempt position is $55,000-$70,000 for a 40-hour work week. A generous benefits package is available including health, dental and vision insurance, MERS and other retirement options, 8 holidays, 5 personal days, 12 sick days and 3 weeks of vacation. This is a hybrid position with work being done remotely and at the LLC office in Grand Rapids. Final Shifting Landscapes tonight at 7pm

The final Shifting Landscapes presentation will be tonight, Monday April 18, 7:00 pm. Professor Paul Pierson will present *A Mixed Economy.* Pierson is the John Gross Professor of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley. Pierson’s teaching and research includes the fields of American politics and public policy, comparative political economy, and social theory. Pierson will trace the economic and political history of the United States over the last century. He’ll show how a viable mixed economy—where both government and business each have their own roles while also working collaboratively—has long been the dominant force of America’s prosperity. Pierson, co-author with Jacob Hacker of *American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America Prosper*, will show how a viable mixed economy—where both effective democratic government and well-functioning markets each have their own roles while also working collaboratively—has long been the dominant force of America’s prosperity. Pierson will discuss “with clear eyes” the failings of our society because we’ve forgotten this essential truth. He will then identify the central role the government has played in our prosperity during and in the decades following WWII. Finally, he will argue that we can and we must restore “a well-functioning politics,” one that promotes shared prosperity in order for there to be both future market success and an effective democratic society. Shifting Landscapes is a presentation of the Mason County District Library and the Abondia Center with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and Michigan Humanitites. Following is an explainer and ideas, also from No Kid Hungry and the library representatives’ group. There is currently legislation introduced in both the US Senate and House to extend the child nutrition waivers. No Kid Hungry is recommending that sites, sponsors, and others involved in SFSP plan as if the waivers will be eliminated. Regulatory Update (courtesy of No Kid Hungry<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbestpracti…>) Congress did not extend the USDA’s authority to issue nationwide child nutrition waivers past the 2021-22 school year. Without this Congressional authority, the USDA’s ability to offer flexibility is limited. As of now, aside from on-site monitoring waivers, all nationwide waivers related to SFSP expire on June 30, 2022. The USDA does not have authority to extend or issue nationwide waivers beyond June 30. Relevant waivers set to expire on June 30 include: · Increased community eligibility (without the waivers, only sites located in areas where at least 50% of children are eligible for free/reduced price school meals are eligible to be SFSP/CACFP sites) · Take-home meals and delivered meals (i.e. not eaten on site) · Parents or guardians permitted to pick up meals without children present. · Multiple days’ worth of meals permitted to be picked up at once. As of now, CACFP At-risk Afterschool Meals<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fns.u…> sites will also need to return to operating without waivers beginning July 1, 2022. At this time, No Kid Hungry encourages libraries and other SFSP and CACFP sites and sponsors to plan as if waivers will not be available for this summer or next school year. Strategies for Action (compiled by No Kid Hungry) Libraries offer a unique benefit to the community and to the SFSP/CACFP programs. Strategies can be taken to leverage these strengths to increase access to meals for kids and teens in the community. Collaboration · Create a team or task force to strategize and plan for summer food access in your community. Seek expertise from local schools, elected officials, and other youth-serving organizations. · Contact your local school to see how you might collaborate. Some schools have full or part-time social workers that could be a great resource. · Work with your local youth-serving organizations to coordinate efforts. There will be additional barriers and challenges this year, but libraries can act and partner to overcome them. Congregate Feeding · The congregate feeding requirement means that many families may struggle with transportation to meal sites. Consider partnering with local transportation agencies (if available) to provide free bus passes to students. No public transportation? Work with your local school or bus agency to see if they’d be willing to set up a summer bus route to the library. · Offer library services on mobile meal routes offered by other summer food programs. · Offering activities is a great way to draw and engage kids and teens at meal sites, and libraries offer expertise and unique strengths in programming. Area Eligibility · Many sites this year will not be eligible to participate as an open summer meal site due to area eligibility. Consider opening a Little Free Pantry<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fletsmovel…> or partnering with a regional food bank. The dollar goes farther at a food bank than at a grocery store. · There might be an open site close to your library. Consider promoting the meal site to patrons visiting the library. Staffing and Funding Resources · Consider volunteers or AmeriCorps VISTA<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Famericorp…> members for future years · Work with the faith-based community.
