[Register for a Discussion Section] The ARSL Continuing Education Committee is pleased to announce the inaugural discussion selection for the ARSL Professional Development Book Club! Everyone, regardless of ARSL membership status, is invited to join us for a quarterly discussion about a professional development title that is relevant to the needs of library professionals working in rural and small libraries. Our winter quarter (January-March) meeting will be held on March 29th, 2022, featuring an interactive discussion of Rebekkah Smith Aldrich's landmark book Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library's Future in an Uncertain World. In order to accommodate those of us in different time zones two discussion groups will be held at the times indicated below. March 29, 2022 | Registration will open in mid-January Discussion 1: 3:30 pm PT / 4:30 pm MT / 5:30 pm CT / 6:30 pm ET Discussion 2: 6:30 pm PT / 7:30 pm MT / 8:30 pm CT / 9:30 pm ET Both discussion groups are free, and open to both ARSL members and nonmembers. Discussion Selection: Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library's Future in an Uncertain World by Rebekkah Smith Aldrich Sustainability may seem like a "pie-in-the-sky" idea, suitable only for larger libraries with bigger budgets to contemplate. However, much of sustainable thinking and action already takes place within the walls and communities of small libraries. As Smith Aldrich states, "How fortuitous for us all that what the world needs most right now is what libraries are already very good at." How can we leverage our skills and our knowledge to create and support thriving and resilient communities? Discussion groups will not be recorded to encourage open, honest dialog about the selected book. ARSL TRAIN February Roundtable: Food Insecurity in Your Community Thursday, February 17, 2022 | 11:00 am PT / 2:00 pm ET Roundtable attendance is free and open to all ARSL members. The ongoing impact of the pandemic, intense winter weather, and systemic inequities are making food insecurity a more urgent issue than ever in communities all over the country. Join librarians working in rural settings to share and discuss ways public libraries can support affected people in their communities through partnerships with other organizations, positioning the library as a food distribution center, and disseminating information. Examples of potential national and regional partners and tips on how to incorporate this work into your library's mission and manage the associated workload will be shared in this interactive, facilitated round table. Facilitator: Erin Silva, Youth & Teen Services Librarian, North Liberty Library, North Liberty, IA [February Roundtable Registration] March Workshop: Budgeting Doesn't Have to Feel Like a Root Canal! Thursday, March 17, 2022 | 11:00 am PT / 2:00 pm ET Registration Cost: $15 for ARSL members, $25 for nonmembers This workshop will help library staff enter the sometimes-daunting world of budgets with confidence. Topics covered will include the budget cycle, basic characteristics of annual budgets, accounting terms, reports, and tenets of ethical money management. Participants will learn how to use the library's strategic plan as a foundation for budget planning and leave with an understanding of the essential "must dos" to manage their organization's budget competently and safely. This workshop will cover aspects of library budgeting applicable to libraries in any state, relevant to both municipal and non-profit/incorporated libraries, and share timelines that can be adapted to differing fiscal years. Presenter: Gary Deziel, Extension assistant professor for the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension. Diezel's work focuses on public library budgeting and human resource management, as well as non-profit and municipal officer training. Panelists [Deb Sica] Deb Sica, MFA, MLIS, has been in the research, education, and library fields since 1993. She's worked as an archivist, an academic, and now as the deputy county librarian at Alameda County Library (Freemont, CA). Sica spent the last decade and a half in public libraries working to transform dated, discordant practice and policy into more inclusive and socially just campaigns for full inclusion. She continues to advocate for literacy, intellectual freedom, critical thinking, and engaged social progress. She serves on the Executive Board of the American Library Association's (ALA) Rainbow Round Table, is the liaison for PLA to the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom, is a member of the ALA Budget Analysis and Review Committee (BARC), and is on ALA Council. Sica lives with Renee, her wife of twenty-three years, and, Gaetano Giovanni, her beloved eighty-pound dog baby, in Vallejo, CA. [Cindy Hohl] Cindy Hohl is the director of branch operations at the Kansas City (MO) Public Library, supporting eight of its ten locations. A member of the Santee Sioux Nation of Nebraska, she is the immediate past-president of the American Indian Library Association (AILA); and is a steering committee member for the 4th National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC 2022). In July 2021, Hohl joined the board of the ALA-affiliated Freedom to Read Foundation, a non-profit legal and educational organization that protects and defends the First Amendment to the Constitution and supports the right of libraries to collect-and individuals to access-information. [Kathy Carroll] Kathy Carroll is a newly-elected member of the ALA Executive Board and the immediate past president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). She currently serves on the AASL Board of Directors, the ALA Council, the ALA Nominating Committee, and the ALA Transforming ALA Governance (TAG) Task Force. Carroll was on the PRAXIS National Advisory Committee for School Media Specialists in 2020 and is a former Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) site visitor. She participated in the Toyota International Teacher Program in South Africa and was a Fulbright Teacher-Scholar in Tokyo, Japan. A 2007 ALA Spectrum Scholar, Carroll is a school librarian at Westwood High School in Blythewood, SC. What is her dream job? She has it! [Melanie Huggins] Melanie Huggins is PLA president and executive director of the Richland Library in Columbia, SC, which received the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation's highest honor. Huggins was named a 2018 Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands for her lasting impact in the community, and was named a 2018 Woman of Influence by Columbia Regional Business Report. In 2018, she was the first woman to win the Stephen G. Morrison Visionary Award from One Columbia for Arts and History. Huggins has been included on Columbia Business Monthly's list of the Fifty Most Influential People for the past three years and was selected as an entrant to the Hall of Fame. Her work is influenced by her belief that libraries are uniquely positioned to make communities more livable, resilient, and inclusive. Interactive touch table

Our library is thinking about purchasing an interactive touch table for the children's area. If your library has one, what brand do you have and would you go with that brand again? Was it a good purchase? What type of software or games are downloaded on it? Also, how do parents feel about having the table in the kids area? We want kids to enjoy the table and play with it, but not get too distracted and not have interest in looking at books. Anything else we should consider for purchasing one?
