Virtual Presentation on federal government contracts

The Ypsilanti District Library partners with the Ann Arbor Area SCORE office to offer virtual programs of interest to small business owners, entrepreneurs, and those interested in starting a small business. On Dec 14th, we're offering a free presentation on Zoom on federal government contracts, which can be challenging to those unfamiliar with government contracting. Here is the program description: " The Federal Government awarded $154B of contracts to small businesses in FY 21. Have you ever thought about getting a small piece of that pie? This session will outline the fundamental steps and techniques you need to potentially obtain federal contracts. We will discuss the approach that any company business can use as well as the special set aside categories of procurement that exist. In addition, we will discuss federal and local resources that are available to help you achieve success." This program is free. Summer Reading Kick-Off Hires

We will be outside signing people up and want something fun for people to do. We are in a downtown area, surrounded by streets and sidewalks, so that is a limitation to consider. Thank you! Hey all, I'm seeking some advice on this lovely Monday afternoon. We've been having a recurring issue with a patron damaging new items. The items are returned with a very intense odor, staining, general discoloration, and even small debris on the exterior of the book or in between the pages. We have very strong reason to believe that the staining and odor is from animal urine. My first instinct is to simply discard the items, since they were all kept together in what appears to be a urine-stained bag with a very similar odor. While some books are in better condition than others upon return, we have some concerns about putting any of them back into the collection. While we have the means to remedy odor, we simply don't have a good way to sanitize them. That said, I'm not sure what the best practice is here and I hate to lose so many new titles at once. Does anyone have experience with this? What are your related policies? Any advice would be most welcome! The next Director will play an integral role in setting the direction for the future in concert with the trustees, staff, and community. Chesterfield is a Class 5 (soon to be Class 6) public library, a member of the Suburban Library Cooperative, serving a population of over 46,000, with a strong fund balance. The library operates and is governed under separate authority from the township and is not a department of the local municipality. The new director will inherit a dedicated staff who are goal oriented and driven towards continuous quality improvement, as witnessed in their collective efforts with QSAC (‘Essential’ in 2019, ‘Enhanced’ in 2022). With engagement in the community as liaisons to the historical society, parks and recreation, chamber and local business organizations, senior residences, and civic organizations, the team actively supports the director as ambassadors of the library in the community. Qualifications and Compensation Qualified candidates will have a Master of Library Science degree, a Level-1 certificate from the Library of Michigan (or be eligible for certification prior to appointment), and a demonstrated history of at least three to five years of progressive responsibility managing a public library or a department within a public library. The ideal candidate will possess strong people and communication skills, applying them in regular interactions within the business community, the network of libraries, and the local municipalities, serving as the face of the library. Ready to Read Michigan update - MDE Literacy Hubs

Hello Early Literacy programmers! Just a quick note that it appears MDE shared the Ready to Read Michigan (RTRM) website<https://www.readytoreadmi.org/home> with training/resources specifically for public library staff out publicly in their most recent Literacy Support Network Hub Newsletter<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aWXfxQuiDAi-LPkO290zXR5w__sEQFhz/view?usp=…>. While it is nice to be recognized for our early literacy work, this might potentially create confusion for community partners. I've already had one library reach out confused why a local hospital was asking about it... So, just be aware that this is "out there," however do take advantage if anyone calls or wants to work with your library on "Ready to Read Michigan," that it is indeed an opportunity to promote your early literacy storytimes, programming, and supports within your community (no matter what you call it). Executive Director - New Jersey Library Association (NJ) The Executive Board of the New Jersey Library Association (NJ)<https://www.njla.org/> seeks a politically astute, determined, and inspirational individual to serve as its next Executive Director<https://bradburymiller.com/job/njla/>. The New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) has been serving library professionals across the state since its inception in 1890. Headquartered in Bordentown, NJ, the organization serves over 1,700 members providing advocacy, professional development opportunities, scholarships, and showcasing what New Jersey libraries have to offer. The Executive Director will manage two part-time staff and an $880,000 budget in support of the organization's goals. Key initiatives include continuing the dialogue around increased state aid for NJ libraries, bringing professionals together through the Association's annual conference, helping to create a more diverse and inclusive membership, advocating for intellectual freedom at the state level, and impressing upon the legislature why libraries should be a priority. Responsibilities: The Executive Director will be responsible for responding to and supporting the needs of NJLA membership; collaborating with and reporting to the Executive Board; serving as the Association's legislative agent maintaining relationships on the state and federal levels; monitoring legislative and regulatory activities related to the association; preparing testimony and public policy statements on behalf of the Association; defining staff duties and establishing performance standards and work schedules; completing business arrangements for conference and other major meetings of the Association including site selection, contract negotiation, exhibits management and general oversight; serving with the President as chief spokesperson for the Association; developing and recommending the annual budget to the Executive Board for approval; and working with the Executive Board to develop, implement, revise and evaluate policies. The Executive Director may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in the job description. Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include five years of progressively more responsible experience in professional library work; three years in an administrative position; or any combination of training or experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities; and residency in the state of New Jersey within one year of employment (unless exempted by law). A Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, strength in advocacy as NJLA's registered lobbyist, an ability to collaborate with existing library-focused state organizations and be self-motivated to envision a plan for the organization. A commitment to diversity and excellence is a must. The hiring salary range is $115,000 - $130,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package.
