I'm happy to announce that a Youth Services Basics course is now available in LM's Niche Academy Staff Skills<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/course/45478>! This self-paced course is designed as an introduction to library services for public library staff who are new to libraries and/or working with youth. Whether you are already working in a library or just starting out in a new youth services position, this content will help you consider why library services focusing specifically on youth are important, how to collect appropriate materials, the types of services and programs you can provide to your patrons, and the importance of outreach services. This course contains an Overview of Youth Services, followed by age-specific sections on Early Childhood, School Age Children, and Tweens & Teens. An accompanying workbook has also been included and library staff can complete the sections to earn badges. QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent; at least 1 year of public library Circulation experience; previous supervisory experience preferred; demonstrated knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System; ability to promote and maintain effective relationships with other staff and to work in a team environment; demonstrated ability to use computer technology, preferably within a Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and Windows environment. Candidates selected for interviews will be tested to demonstrate their knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. RESPONSIBILITIES: Interviews and hires shelvers in consultation with the Circulation Assistant Manager; trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates shelvers and department volunteers; prepares and delivers regular performance appraisals for shelvers in consultation with the Circulation Assistant Manager; responsible for condition and maintenance of library shelves in conjunction with the Circulation Assistant Manager; performs duties and responsibilities of a circulation clerk as needed, but will primarily focus on supervision of shelvers and the condition of the shelves at the Main Library. Many of you may have heard that the State of Michigan has created the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office. We are supporting their work as they begin to gather data. This goal aligns with a recommendation of the 2021 Michigan Poverty Task Force<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furl.email…> report and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which dedicated resources towards this goal. MIHI has been tasked with leading Michigan's digital equity efforts, but it needs the help of institutions like yours. MIHI wants to foster greater cooperation and sharing of information among organizations that engage in digital inclusion activities across Michigan, such as digital skills training, public computer access, public- Wi-Fi, helping people sign up for the Affordable Connectivity Program, etc. MIHI wants to raise awareness of these services, share ideas, and encourage collaboration for advancing digital inclusion in Michigan.
