Tecumseh District Library presents textile author Virginia Postrel on Facebook Live

Tecumseh District Library hosts "Fabric of Civilization" on Facebook Live on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. This special live event can be viewed from the library's Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Tecumseh-District-Library-192148050127/. Textiles are one of humanity's oldest and most influential technologies, yet we take them for granted. Drawing on her widely praised new book The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, author Virginia Postrel will take us on a tour of some of the innovations that gave us today's textile abundance and the ways textiles shaped civilization as we know it. Virginia Postrel is an award-winning journalist and independent scholar. She is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion and has been a columnist for The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Her previous books include The Power of Glamour, The Substance of Style, and The Future and Its Enemies. Her research is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Family Literacy Story Time

If your library has an established Family Literacy Story Time, I would love to get some advice. We are a mid-size class II library looking for program ideas for our children who are leaving our morning Preschool Story Time and heading off to school. 1. What time of day do you offer Family Literacy Story Time? 2. How often do you offer it? Weekly? Bi-weekly? Monthly? 3. Do you set limits for age-ranges for children? Any information, suggestions, and advice will be appreciated. I will compile all answers and post for everyone. Snacks/Food Handling at Programs Response

Hello Jessica, Since COVID, we've purchased food that is individually wrapped as part of our Grab and Go bags if we needed them for our programs. Right now, I plan on getting food from a local Mexican restaurant for an upcoming in-person event, and I plan to have them individually packaged as well as have separate utensils and napkins for the patrons. Superiorland Library Cooperative Names New Director

It is my honor to announce that Dillon Geshel has been chosen as the new Director of the Superiorland Library Cooperative. Dillon is currently Director of the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton, MI, where he lives with his wife and three children. Dillon was recently named to the Michigan Library Association Board of Trustees, and serves on the Friends of Michigan Libraries Board as well. Dillon has served on many committees and boards both within the SLC and throughout the state, and we feel that his creativity, professionalism, and knowledge of budgets, boards, advocacy, and the cooperative members make him an ideal choice for our next Director. I know there was The Purple Gang around Detroit, but there were gangsters in southwest Michigan also. Snacks/Food Handling at Programs

Would you be willing to share how your library currently handles food items at library programs, such as snacks or samples? Has it changed since COVID? Does your library have a policy or a practice around food at programming? Are there safety precautions in place, to what degree, do you use waivers? Since COVID, we're curious about how to move forward with traditional things like sharables (such as splitting a pizza, or a large bag of chips in a bowl, or box of cookies at teen programs), use of individually wrapped snacks, or handling samples from cooking demonstrations or recipe challenges (for teen and adult programming).
