The new part-time librarian is eligible to receive a top of the market compensation and a generous schedule of paid time off (PTO). Position Summary The part-time librarian position reports to the Service Area Coordinator and is responsible for reference and readers advisory services, collection development activities, instruction in the use of the library and its resources, and in updating and verifying the bibliographic content of the catalog database. The part-time librarian also develops and presents programs, and provides a high-level of customer services to all library patrons. Minimum Requirements Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA college or university. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with the SirsiDynix automation system. Knowledge of online databases, reference resources, and public computer applications to assist the general public. Knowledge of tablet and/or mobile devices used for accessing Overdrive, RBDigital, Hoopla, and other digital services. Knowledge of popular reading trends in children's literature. Ability to work the following schedule: Mondays 9:30am-5pm, Tuesdays 1:30-9pm, Thursdays 1:30-9pm, every other Saturday 9:30am-5pm, and every fifth Sunday during the school year 1-5pm. Join us Saturday, July 31st @ 2 pm for LIVE BUTTERFLIES at the Commerce Township Community Library! It is common knowledge that the Monarch Butterfly relies on milkweed as the critical larval food plant that ensures future generations. However, Michigan's swallowtails - four equally large and beautiful butterfly species, but much less acknowledged - each also rely on their own specific larval food plants to reproduce. With the use of beautiful Powerpoint images and live specimens Jim McGrath of Nature Discovery will discuss the life cycles of Black, Spicebush, Tiger and Giant Swallowtails, including how to find their ornately-colored and patterned caterpillars in the wild, how to rear them safely to adult form, and what to provide in your yard to sustain adult swallowtails and caterpillars, alike. Discussion will include several other Michigan-native lepidopterans, their larvae and food plants, as well. The American Library Association, ALA, continues to advocate for legislation related to the Build America's Libraries Act part of the current developments in DC related to the federal infrastructure talks. The Build America's Libraries Act (S. 127 / H.R. 1581) includes $5 billion in funding for library construction and renovation. This week ALA is asking individuals that support this bill to contact their Senator and in Michigan it is ideal to communicate with Sen. Gary Peters (D). Senators Stabenow and Slotkin already support this bill. If you would like Sen. Thermal Transfer Printers

Our library currently uses direct thermal printers for cataloging/spine labels, but we are investigating investing in Thermal Transfer printers for longer-lasting-readability for our spine labels. Any one with Thermal Transfer printers willing to share their experiences? What model(s) are you using? Is it worth the investment? We see vastly different pricing from DEMCO vs Amazon, same Zebra brand but different models... is there a difference in the product? Thank you in advance! Hi there, We just added Flex to our hoopla platform last month (June). To your questions: No, it doesn't seem to confuse patrons, but I also am not sure they truly understand the difference - they see a title, they check it out. I'm guessing the heavy users will figure it out because they will hit their instant borrow max and need to pay attention to which borrowing model they are using. If that makes sense. The transfer itself went smoothly enough - LOTS of hand-holding from hoopla, which was helpful. However, we switched from CloudLibrary to hoopla Flex and lost all of our metered access titles. SIGNIFICANT dollars lost. Our hoopla rep simply announced during a meeting that all of our metered access titles transferred as "expired." Neither Cloud nor hoopla seems to know why this happened. I'm still trying to get answers. So that part was not cool. So far, for us, hoopla remains significantly more expensive than Overdrive. Our instant borrows still - even with all of the titles we've had to replace - cost much more than our Flex titles. I think about twice as much for the one month we've had both borrowing models. We also turned on requesting for our patrons. Requests need to be purchased or denied individually and right now, including children's, YA, and adult, we have almost 700 requests outstanding. I work on them every day, but our children's and YA libs weren't aware of the requests until recently so this number may level out over time. Patrons seem to like the option of requesting and I haven't had any complaints about denied requests. Please let me know if anyone else lost all their MA titles when transferring to hoopla.
