Two grants programs are open for applications, an ARPA Equipment grant and an ARPA Capacity grant. The grant priorities are: * Increase the capacity of Michigan libraries to safely provide services to community members; * Increase the capacity of Michigan libraries to safely provide content to community members. The grant period is approximately 13 months (September 2021 to September 30, 2022) and funding is from $25,000 to $250,000. Funding is by reimbursement only. Applications are due Thursday, July 15, 2021 by 5:00 PM EST. An application webinar is Tuesday, June 22nd at 2:00 PM. Registration is on the ARPA Equipment grant page. The grant program is competitive. ARPA Capacity Grant program This ARPA grant program is designed to assist public and academic libraries through statewide support for PPE supplies, digital inclusion devices and services, and digital content. Eligible applicants are Michigan library cooperatives established under P.A. 89 of 1977 or Michigan non-profit associations or organizations committed primarily to resource sharing and/or the advancement of statewide or regional library services. The grant priorities are: * Increase the capacity of Michigan public libraries to provide internet access to those community members without access; * Increase the capacity of Michigan libraries to safely provide services to community members; * Increase the capacity of Michigan libraries to safely provide content to community members. The grant period is approximately 13 months (September 2021 to September 30, 2022) and funding is from $250,000 to $2,000,000. Funding is by reimbursement only. Detroit Public Library will virtually be hosting Annette Gordon-Reed in conversation with local historian Jamon Jordon. The event takes place Saturday, June 19,2021 at 1:00 pm. Weaving together American history, dramatic family chronicle, and searing episodes of memoir, Annette Gordon-Reed’s On Juneteenth provides a historian’s view of the country’s long road to Juneteenth, recounting both its origins in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured in the century since, from Reconstruction through Jim Crow and beyond. Filtering and ARP funds

Hello all, I have heard that if we get a grant for equipment, such as hotspots, tablets, laptops, or long range wifi access points, we will have to filter everything. We have never used filters here and it has been fine. I have a problem with the idea that we will filter what people can access in their own home or outside the library because I don't think that's our job. However, if we have to do it, I have some questions. 1. Can anyone recommend a DNS filter that isn't so restrictive you can't search for certain health questions? 2. What problems have you had with your filtering software, if any? 3. Does anyone know the bare minimum of filtering that will meet CIPA requirements? 4. What is the process for turning it off for patrons that request no filtering? Is it easy enough for any staff to do at checkout of hotspots and tablets? 5. How does the government monitor filtering and enforce CIPA? I'm sure I will have lots more questions but any information you can provide will be a good start on my research. Thank you, as always!
