PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Unpacks shipments of new library materials following established procedures. o Receives and reconciles packing slips/invoices. o Verifies and updates order information in library's automated system. * Processes incoming items following established procedures and creates item records. o Searches for MARC (machine-readable) bibliographic records for items added to the library's catalog. Edits records as necessary. o Creates original bibliographic records when needed. * Assists in maintaining the quality of the catalog by updating/editing item records as needed. * Assists in maintaining the quality of the physical collection by repairing materials as needed or requested by selectors. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES * Assists in other Circulation Services workgroups as directed. * Accepts special assignments and serves on workgroups/committees in support of the library's goals and objectives. * Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach and alerts appropriate staff member for assistance, completing interaction or incident reports as directed. * Refers patron queries and issues beyond the Technical Processing Assistant's scope of authority to the Circulation Services Supervisor, Department Heads or Director, as appropriate. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Basic knowledge typically associated with the completion of a high school diploma. * Proficiency with common office equipment and computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite. Efficient and accurate keyboarding and keen attention to detail. * High-level verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to work independently. * Ability to coordinate own work with the work of others and to prioritize duties according to time requirements and workflow. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Punctuality and dependability. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment. * One year experience in cataloging. o Familiarity with MARC records and fielded data. o Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Integrated Library System. Clarke Historical Library Event: Aladdin Kit Homes

On Thursday, March 4, at 7:00 pm, the Clarke Historical Library will host Wendy and Andrew Mutch to speak about the Aladdin Kit Home Company. The Clarke is the home of the Aladdin Company archives, with over 350 cubic feet of company records including plans and blueprints, product catalogs, individual sale receipts, and much more. Wendy and Andrew are Aladdin Kit Home aficionados who have researched the company and have identified Aladdin homes throughout southeastern Michigan and beyond. This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University's videoconferencing tool, Webex, and it will be recorded to enjoy at a later time. Ingram Response to Shipping Delays

Hi Jim, Good to hear from you! Here’s what I would have to say: Ingram has had very few service delays since the pandemic began. In fact, Ingram ships a vast majority of orders the same day for in-stock unprocessed materials. Processed materials take just a couple of days more. Our latest statistics indicate we are shipping books to more than 91% of the country in less than two days. During the pandemic, we have been continuously hiring warehouse staff to meet increasing demand. Ingram also has the largest active inventory of any distributor by far – well over 17 MILLION titles -- and in most cases Ingram customers have been receiving orders just as quickly as they were before the pandemic. In fact, in 2020 we took more than 770,000 library orders, shipped 18.4 million pounds of materials to libraries (more than 1.2 million cartons), and completed 25 Opening Day Collections on time. We know libraries receiving their materials as fast as possible is absolutely critical, and we’re committed to helping them do so. Governor Whitmer Kicks off March by Declaring the Month as March is Reading Month LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Whitmer issued a proclamation declaring the month of March as Reading Month in Michigan. Throughout the month, schools, children, and adults alike use this time to promote the importance of reading. “Every year the country uses this month to promote reading and imagination. I am proud to declare March as Reading Month in Michigan and I encourage everyone to find time to read,” said Governor Whitmer. “This month, we should recommit ourselves to encouraging children and young adults to read diverse literary works early and often so they can see themselves and others in what they read.” The governor is committed to ensuring students and schools have the resources they need to learn and teach safely.
