Join our team! Position: Support Services Shelver, Permanent Part-Time Reports To: Support Services Supervisor Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Sorts and loads carts for shelving; shelves and shifts materials in the public areas; shelf reads; reports problems with shelf organization to the Support Services Supervisor. 2. Assists with opening and closing procedures for the Support Services Department. 3. Assists with the overall maintenance and orderliness of the Library’s collections, display areas, and department areas. 4. Assists other Support Services staff with operations of the ILS module and the AST system. 5. Directs guests to Information Services staff for assistance. Other Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Assists Librarians with special projects with the approval of the Support Services Supervisor. 2. Adapts and responds to multiple priorities, interruptions, and demands and resolves problem situations in a positive manner. 3. Assists in accomplishing the Library’s and the Support Service Department’s goals. 4. Enforces library policies relevant to public use; responds to emergencies and provides support, as needed; acts quickly, exercising good judgment. 5. Works positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish department goals. 6. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Requirements: 1. High school diploma or equivalent required. 2. Knowledge of alphabetical, numerical and decimal systems of arrangement. 3. Proficient in MS Office, Internet browsers, and other computer related technology. 4. Enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable. 5. Dedicated to providing positive customer service. 6. Dedicated to public service. 7. Strong obligation to confidentiality. 8. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 9. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills. 10. Values diversity in the workplace and in the community. 11. Ability to speak multiple languages helpful. 12. May require a valid Michigan driver’s license based on assignment. Working Environment: 1. Physical mobility, vision, hearing, and manual dexterity essential. 2. Maintain physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, bending, and /or walking for extended periods of time; stooping; crouching; reaching; carrying books or boxes of books; pushing book carts; seeing; keyboarding; using the telephone; lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull with wheeled cart up to 500 pounds; operating assigned equipment; picking up litter; spreading ice melt. 3. Evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are required. As we prepared our materials<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001nYXu5hyiE4p4G5mqaCdB8TE7wUofoPC5PK3cLKxUMNkO…> for this year's virtual Humanities on the Hill, an advocacy event for state humanities councils, we reviewed our impact and reach from 2016 to where we are now. Our Board and staff are so excited about this expanded reach, which has allowed us to increase access to the humanities across Michigan. We marvel at how much we learn every day as this humanities network grows! This makes me think of a funny quote by Milton Berle, who said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” That is true! As we wrap up the current cycle of the Great Michigan Read, we are at 99 percent of our goal to be in every Michigan county. The Board and staff are also preparing for strategic planning, and with that process in mind, we seek to identify what opportunities -- and doors! -- need to be explored and built. An important part of preparing for that is our recent survey regarding Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA), which 98 people participated in. Once our IDEA Action Council has processed the data, we will share results. Thank you for helping us do better and to prepare for the future. We are gratified by the strength of your support, and thankful to the National Endowment for the Humanities and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for continuing to fund our work. The Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs (MCACA) announces the opening of their FY22 grant programs. [Municipal Law News] Public Meetings with 25 Persons or Fewer Permissible Beginning March 5, 2021 March 2, 2021 The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), in coordination with Governor Whitmer, issued an updated Gatherings and Face Mask Order earlier today that allows for indoor meetings of 25 persons or fewer. The order, which does not take effect until March 5, 2021, loosens capacity restrictions for a variety of activities, including for indoor, in-person meetings. As a result, public bodies are once again allowed to conduct public meetings in-person under certain guidelines. In-Person Gatherings and Public Meetings Under today's order, indoor gatherings at non-residential venues are permissible so long as there are no more than 25 persons gathered. There is no limitation on the number of households gathered. Previous orders restricted gatherings to no more than 10 persons from no more than 2 households. The public body should still take steps to ensure that persons are wearing face coverings and that persons not part of the same household maintain six feet of distance from one another to the extent possible. For meetings where the expected attendance at any given time is less than 25 persons (including the public officials), the public body may meet indoors. Meetings where more than 25 attendees are expected, such as at the Board of Review, attendees may still meet in-person if there are no more than 25 persons present at any given time. If more than 25 persons are expected to be in attendance at any given time, it is advisable that the meeting either (i) be held outdoors where gathering limits are increased to 300 persons, or (ii) be held virtually or with a virtual option, subject to the conditions below. Virtual or Electronic Public Meetings While the order lifts capacity requirements, it does not require public bodies to meet in person. Public meetings may continue to be held virtually utilizing an electronic platform like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. The platform must allow for two-way communications between members of the public and members of the public body. Be sure to properly notice meetings, including publishing the notice on the public body's website at least 18 hours before it is scheduled to be held. Include in the notice the reason for why the public body is meeting electronically; how members of the public, including persons with disabilities, are able to participate; and how the members of the public body may contact members of the public body to give input or ask questions. Maria replaces Karen Fehl who retired in August 2020 after 16 years of service. Maria was formally the Head of Adult Services at the Baldwin Library in Birmingham, Michigan. Today, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) updated two of its epidemic orders, allowing for increased capacity limits at various venues, larger residential and nonresidential gatherings and expanded visitation opportunities at residential care facilities. Changes are designed to balance reopening while controlling the spread of COVID-19 and save Michiganders’ lives. Although progress has been made in reduction of hospitalizations, it is crucial that Michiganders continue to mask up and socially distance as we reopen. “As we continue our vaccine rollout and make steady progress against the virus, we are taking additional incremental steps to re-engage to ensure we are protecting our families and frontline workers and saving lives,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “Michigan is a national leader in the fight against COVID-19, and our fact-based, data-driven approach will help our state rebuild our economy and resume normal day-to-day activities. As always, mask up, maintain social distancing, and wash your hands. We all have a personal responsibility to slow the spread of the virus so we can end this pandemic together. One of the most important things Michiganders can do is make a plan to get the safe and effective vaccine when it’s available to you.” “More than 2 million doses of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine have been administered and a third vaccine will soon be arriving here in Michigan to help us end the pandemic in our state,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “We continue to monitor the data closely, and based on current trends we are taking another step toward normalcy. We urge Michiganders to continue doing what works and wearing a mask, washing their hands and avoiding crowds.” MDHHS had been closely monitoring three metrics<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> for stabilization or declines over the past several weeks. As with other states, Michigan’s metrics are mixed. The presence of more infectious variants, such as the B 1.1.7 variant, threatens our progress in control of the epidemic and MDHHS will be monitoring data closely. In recent days:  * Hospital capacity dedicated to COVID-19 is now at 3.9%. This metric peaked at 19.6% on Tuesday, Dec. 4.  * Overall case rates: After declining for six weeks, this metric is plateauing at 91.2 cases per million. The rate is similar to what we were at the beginning of October. * Positivity rate: is now at 3.7% having increased slightly from last week (3.5%). This metric is similar to where we were at the beginning of October. With all residents at skilled nursing homes having been offered their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and a vast majority having had their second dose, the Residential Care Facilities Order<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> goes into effect immediately. The order encourages communal dining and group activities for residents and allows indoor and outdoor visitation in all counties regardless of county risk level. Visitation is allowed as long as the facility has not had a new COVID-19 case in the last 14 days and all indoor visitors ages 13 and older are subject to rapid antigen testing. Testing will help keep residents, staff and families safe while allowing for visitation and an increased quality of life for residents. Adult foster care homes licensed for 12 or fewer residents, hospice facilities, substance use disorder residential facilities and assisted-living facilities are encouraged to implement visitor and staff testing protocols. Visitors will be required to wear face masks or other personal protective equipment when required by the facility at all times. In general, visitors will need to maintain six feet from residents. “While we continue to have virus very present across the entire state, our improvements in case numbers, test positivity, and vaccinations mean we can move forward with reopening in an incremental way,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. “I am glad we continue to make progress, but that progress is fragile. Everyone should continue to do important things like wearing a mask, washing hands, avoiding large gatherings and getting one of the three safe and effective vaccines when it becomes available to you.” Changes to the Gatherings and Mask Order<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> go into effect Friday, March 5, and remain in effect through Monday, April 19. Capacity changes include: * Restaurants and bars are allowed to be at 50% capacity up to 100 people. Tables must be six feet apart with no more than six people per table. There is now an 11 p.m. curfew. * Indoor non-residential gatherings where people interact across households are permitted up to 25 people, allowing public meetings and other small indoor gatherings to resume. * Outdoor non-residential gatherings where people interact across households are permitted up to 300, allowing larger outdoor events to resume. * Indoor entertainment venues are allowed to be at 50% capacity, up to 300 people. * Exercise facilities are allowed to be at 30% capacity with restrictions on distancing and mask requirements. * Retail is allowed to be at 50% capacity. * Casinos are allowed to be at 30% capacity. * Indoor stadiums and arenas are allowed have 375 if seating capacity is under 10,000; 750 if seating capacity is over 10,000. * Outdoor entertainment and recreational facilities may host up to 1,000 patrons. Indoor residential gatherings are now limited to 15 people from three households, while outdoor residential gatherings can include up to 50 people. The epidemic order continues to temporarily pause other venues and activities where participants have close physical contacts and are not consistently masked, like water parks. As before, employees who work in jobs that cannot be performed from home can continue to go to work, while employees who can work from home should continue to do so.   Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly. Hi all! Leanna Hicks Public Library would like to inform the library community that we will be officially opening our doors for in-person services on Monday, March 22. A whole-hearted, sincere and grateful, "THANK YOU!!!" to all our neighboring libraries who have helped our patrons on and off since 2018 as we overcame the challenges since. We appreciate all the support the library system has provided us, the materials, the library visits, and the encouraging notes sent along with care packages, we truly cannot begin to express our gratitude. For those who may like to inform Inkster patrons, LHPL general operating hours will be: Monday - Thursday 11am-7pm Saturday 11am-5pm Closed Fridays and Sundays A note, too, that at this time we still do not have fax capabilities. We are hoping to have this resolved soon. Thank you again for your support and patience with Leanna Hicks Public Library as we reset to properly serve our patrons.
