Live Online Classes for Michigan's Older Adults - Libraries can provide connections to these for their community members

The initiative below is an offering from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and GetSetup-Michigan to offer Michigan's older adults free, live interactive online classes. These offerings are a great complement to programing you may be offering at your library already to your communities. The classes focus on supporting the use of digital devices such as computers, smartphone, tablets as well as other services such as Zoom, social media and more. There are more than 150 online classes for older adults and a coupon code of MICHIGANHEALTH listed on the site to use to waive any fees associated with the classes. Digital literacy is a great need in the senior community and during the pandemic there are many services available but not all of our residents are comfortable or know how to use them. This initiative is a great way to help raise the skills and knowledge around technology use as well as help create social connections for many that may feel extra isolated at this time. Audiovisual Preservation in Cultural Heritage Collections Survey

Sarah Mainville, MSU Libraries’ Media Preservation Librarian, and Biz Gallo, Audiovisual Preservation Consultant, are researching methods to make audiovisual preservation more accessible to small, under-funded cultural heritage institutions in Michigan. We have created this survey with the purpose of assessing the prevalence of audiovisual media in cultural heritage collections, the comfort level of handling audiovisual media, and barriers to audiovisual preservation. The data collected in this survey will be anonymized and the results will be used for identifying areas of need for audiovisual preservation in the Michigan and Great Lakes region so that stakeholders can work together to provide resources, such as assistance or educational programs, to meet those needs. This community focused library is looking for a collaborative leader who enjoys working with others, and can provide a clear vision, strong organizational and communication skills and exciting and innovative services and programs. The Library, established as a township library in 1917, serves a population of 9,110 (2010 Census) in Kent County (approximately 15 miles from Grand Rapids) in West Michigan and is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative and their shared automated library system. QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and at least three years of professional library employment including a broad background in management, administration, operations and finance, knowledge of public library services and operation of library collections, or its equivalent. Upon hiring, the library director is expected to earn Librarian Certification Level 3, and perform the completion of the Beginning Library Workshop offered by the Library of Michigan. SALARY AND BENEFITS: This is a 34 hour a week part-time position with an hourly rate of $23.00 and includes 18 days of PTO and an additional 8 paid holidays. No other benefits are provided. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: · Draft and recommend policy and procedures, and report directly to Sparta Township library board for their implementation. Administer the library in accordance with adopted policies and interpret policies to staff and public. · Responsible for hiring, dismissal, discipline, instruction of job functions, training and education of employees. · Attend all regular and special meetings of the library board. Attend meetings of Sparta Township Board when applicable to maintaining/implementing library policies and procedures. · Be active in the Lakeland Library Cooperative meetings. Bring information from the Co-op to staff and library board. Represent the library and vote in accordance with the standards of our community and library board. · Hold regular staff meetings and receive ideas and comments about library functions, staff needs and employee requests. Keep minutes of staff meetings and report to library board. · Compile monthly , quarterly, and year-end reports for presentation to the library board. Compile statistics needed to complete the state aid report with the assistance of the library board treasurer. · Develop grant proposals when applicable . · Work with the library board treasurer and associate library director to prepare and present to the library board recommendations for the fiscal year based on the library’s anticipated needs, and operate the library within the budget allotment. · Purchase material which includes audio-visual, print, and digital material, and oversee the material selection purchases of the youth librarian and associate director. · Negotiate all agreements and contracts and oversee maintenance and improvement of library facilities. · Possess ability to understand and utilize established and new technology, including software, hardware, library and business applications, tools and devices. · Assist at circulation desk as relief or substitute during breaks, vacations or illness. · Maintain copies of donations and memorials. With the ALA Midwinter meetings coming up beginning this weekend, I wanted to let you know of a number of sessions that you are invited to attend. If you've ever wanted to know more about the business of ALA and how some decisions are made, you are welcome to sit in on a Council session, or for a part of one - unless the Council is in closed session. 2020/2021 SL 21 Model School Library - Video Tour

For those of you who work with your local school libraries and librarians, we have a video tour of the 2020/2021 21st Century School Library (SL 21). We were pleased to recognize Everett High School Library Media Center in the Lansing Public Schools as the 2020/2021 Model 21st Century School Library last summer. Joy Currie is the School Librarian for Everett High School with Principal Jaime Gundrum. The library won the Model SL 21 honor for Ms. Currie's focus on bringing life experiences to Everett High School students as well as academic support. Joy has reached out to a variety of community groups to help students achieve in their academic and personal lives, creating an outstanding program in the process. In a typical year, we would have visited Everett High School and Joy would have been able to host visitors to her library. This of course is an unusual year. carpeting squares & electric projects

Have any libraries used carpet squares over electric conduit products? I have seen both Connectrac and Thread (by Steelcase) and I like the idea of putting in electric without jack hammering out our cement floor. What are the pros and cons of these products? How did you contract it out? (with a designer, or separately with an electrical contractor and a carpeting contractor?) If you have any photos of your finished project they would be greatly appreciated.
