We plan programs, develop collections, provide school support, and create welcoming youth and teen areas. We work closely with staff across YDL and with other local organizations to serve families, tweens and teens throughout the community. We focus on early learning, hands-on STEAM, creating a welcoming, inclusive environment, and elevating youth voices. ABOUT THE POSITION The ideal candidate for this job will be passionate about serving a diverse community, empowering kids, parents, and teens to engage with and enjoy coming to the library. Paraprofessional duties assigned by the YDL-Michigan Branch Manager will include but are not limited to the following: * Helping kids and parents find books and information in the Youth Department. * Assisting families in the use of computers, iPads, digital books, printing, and other library technology. * Marketing library materials by creating booklists and displays. * Engaging with youth to help them feel welcome in the library. * Planning and leading library programs for youth, families and teens. * Attending department meetings to help set team goals and develop new services to meet community needs. * Completing special projects as assigned. * Forming and maintaining community partnerships to better serve families. QUALIFICATIONS * Associate's Degree or equivalent. Formal training in a child-related field or experience working with youth desired. * Demonstrated ability to work with families and youth from diverse populations. * Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. * Strong commitment to providing quality customer service. * Ability to function in a professional manner, work independently, and use good judgment. * Enthusiastic and dependable team player. * Creative problem solving skills and flexibility to adapt to changing community needs. * Proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office and social media tools. * Strong desire to engage, nurture, and mentor children birth-18, their parents, caregivers and teachers. * Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks. * Knowledge of children's literature, youth development, and early learning concepts desired. HOURS Part-time, 20 hours per week (including regularly scheduled evenings and weekends). Hours are flexible and some work can be done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The library is currently maintaining the safety of employees by requiring masks and social distancing, and providing curbside patron services while closed. SALARY/BENEFITS Hourly wage starting at $14.72. Pro-rated paid time off and holidays. Employer paid retirement contribution after one year of service. Nature of Work/Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Business Office Manager coordinates a variety of administrative, financial, human resources, and clerical tasks to support the library administration. This position is responsible for maintaining library administrative files and records, including payroll/personnel, financial, and benefits. Duties include: * With library accountant, manages accounts payable, helps prepare monthly financial statements, and assists with annual audit * Handles library banking activities including maintenance of all bank accounts and preparation of deposits * Maintains records for all revenues collected; tracks all petty cash and credit card transactions * Reviews and evaluates insurance renewals and handles insurance claims * Maintains library personnel records according to legal requirements * Completes necessary paperwork for employee hires and terminations * Compiles payroll, including reporting hours worked by each employee every two week period * Maintains personnel database, including benefit accruals, and provides staff current, accurate balances * Complies with legal requirements for administration of human resources and keeps abreast of changes * Handles unemployment claims, short-term disability claims and COBRA requests for benefits * Serves as liaison between benefit providers and YDL employees * Assembles and distributes the monthly Library Board packet and posts meeting notices * Attends monthly Library Board meetings and records Board minutes * Other duties as assigned Qualifications and Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Degree in business, finance, accounting, or human resources or certificate in bookkeeping or comparable experience * Minimum of five years successful related work experience, non-profit or governmental background desired * Accuracy and skill in word processing, arithmetic, English grammar and spelling * Proficient in Windows, Adobe Acrobat, MS Word, Excel, and Filemaker and quickly learns new software * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and supervisor * Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize work, and set priorities * Knowledge of general office procedures, library principles, and general records management * Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with public and staff, including the ability to explain benefit and employment concepts in basic terms * Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records, personnel and administrative matters * Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines * Positive public service attitude Salary/ Benefits: $48,000-58,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Kingsley Book Drop Cart Available for Sale

Hi all, We've got a spare Kingsley book drop cart available for sale to any library that's interested in coming to get it. It is similar to the one found at this link: https://www.kingsley.com/cushiondrop-library-book-media-transport-push-cart I've attached photos, too. Our Library Board would rather we sell it rather than give it away, so we're interested in all reasonable offers. We'll compile all the offers we receive and present them to the Board and then follow up with everyone who was interested once we get our response. Here's the measurements/specs: The total height of the bin and wheels = 39.5 inches high The bin is 26 inches on each side and is square The bin itself minus the wheels is 35 inches high It's got soft batting at the bottom, and a floating floor that moves down as more items are put in it. Works fine, we just have an extra we never use and the space that it's stored in could be used more effectively. Ready to Read Michigan update

Hello, In the last year we have all experienced change and growth with our traditional library programs, and Ready to Read Michigan<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9264,7-381-88855_89743_89749--…> (RTRM) is also experiencing a shift. The Library of Michigan has transitioned RTRM to a program that focuses on supporting public library staff as they model early literacy skill development directly to families and caregivers with young children (ages birth to 5). RTRM will continue to train and support public library staff as they engage in outreach to families and caregivers, as well as early childhood centers, schools, and daycares in their community. RTRM will no longer create and provide materials around a specific book title. At the end of 2020, RTRM created the Ready to Read Michigan Toolkit: Workshops for Parents and Early Childhood Educators<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2020_RTRM_Toolkit_7…> and offered a virtual training series with Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen. As RTRM moves forward, additional workshops and webinars will continue to be offered to library staff on best practices in early literacy. We also have many printable resources available on our new website, www.ReadytoReadMi.org<http://www.ReadytoReadMi.org>, an evolving landing place specifically for public library staff in Michigan to access resources, news, and training. If you are a Class 4 or 5 city library, and your city does not provide financial services for the library, I would like to know: 1. How much do you budget for accounting services? 2. How much do you budget for bookkeeping services? 3. How much do you budget for your annual audit? 4. What is your total operating budget? 5. How much do you budget for payroll services? 6. How many employees do you have? 7. Do you have employees who perform any of the above services for the library?
