Dear Michlib-L, Please join us for our first virtual genealogy event, next week, Tuesday, June 16, 2020, 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Our presenter, Judy Nimer Muhn, will be presenting "Native, First Nation, Indian: Researching Indigenous Peoples". Please find the event description below. "The first residents of North America primarily kept records through oral histories, multi-generational sharing of histories through storytelling and family relationships and intermarriages. While there are hundreds of federally-recognized tribes, there are also broad, general areas that can direct aspects of research. Knowing the geographic location of ancestral families can help to identify tribal connections. From knowing these potential tribal connections, specific record groups such as special Indian censuses, enrollment lists and tribal membership information can be utilized. As some Indians also held land, converted to Christianity, and had business relationships, other records can be helpful in placing these families in time and location. While these families can be research challenges, as oral history and stories are foundational and there are often limited records, learning about tribal customs and naming patterns, lifestyles and movements, can help to locate fur trade, farming, military and other records that can help in locating family groups. Beginners will learn how to discern whether the family myth about a Native ancestor may be real and where to look, while more advanced beginners and intermediate researchers can begin to discover how to locate records unique to certain tribal membership requirements or resources. MI Library Quest - virtual event for teens

Hello! You're invited to participate in MI Library Quest. A newly-formed group of librarians from throughout the state has recently begun meeting to collaborate on virtual teen programming. Our first project is MI Library Quest. The MI Library Quest is a virtual summer program open to all teens in the state of Michigan designed to encourage them to explore libraries across the state of Michigan. Teens will locate codes on the websites of participating libraries, tell us what they found, and enter those codes in the Dragon Eradication Inventory (Google form). All entries with at least ## codes are eligible for a chance to win fun prizes. (The number of codes required will be a percentage of participating libraries and will be determined after we have a final list of libraries.) The premise of the Quest is helping King Thaddeus Brockwright the Third rid the kingdom of the dreaded bronze dragon. Codes on each library's website will include items needed to accomplish this challenge. More information on the quest story is in the links below. 2020 Summer library programming survey news

Dear Summer Library Program Coordinators, The 2020 Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) End-of-Summer Survey is in the works! While your summer programming is likely just beginning, it's important to think about the data you will report on in a few months. (No matter what your programming looks like this summer, or even if you used the #ImagineYourStory theme.) The 2020 CSLP End-of-Summer Survey will open on Monday, July 27, 2020 and will close on Friday, September 25, 2020. I will share the survey link in a future email. The survey will cover three age groups, Children's (0-11), Teens (12-18), and Adults (19+) [age categories as defined by the Institute of Museum and Library Services]. Questions will include: * How your library tracks participation in your summer library program. * Total number in each of the three age groups who participated in your summer library program. * Total number in each age group who completed the minimum goal. * Total number of summer library program themed events (includes virtual) for each age group. * Total number of individuals attending (includes virtual) summer library program themed events for each age group. * Ways your library adapted programming in response to the global health crisis. * Your suggestions, ideas and feedback for summer library program themes for 2022 and beyond. The CSLP survey questions are attached as a PDF (disregard the New Jersey specific Q's) for your reference. CSLP works with libraries to create an inclusive literacy based program that is enjoyable for all ages, provide a reproducible program with a unified theme, share resources and offer professional support. Your response to this survey ensures that we continue to receive a valuable product from CSLP. In addition, survey responses help state library staff support your library's needs.
