Feeding children in the time of COVID-19 By Adria Ricke, Director, Globe Public Library, AZ At the 2016 Arizona State Library Annual Conference, the Globe Public Library found out about the USDA Summer Lunch Buddies Program. We learned that the program exists to provide free and healthy meals to any child 18 and younger in the summer, when many children face food insecurity. By summer 2017, the Globe Public Library reached out to the local representative, Cindy Cothrun of Destiny School, and we became a serving site every summer from then on. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/_compresseds/c6976d0f-d…] We did not expect to serve food again until summer 2020 but then, COVID-19 struck. Our library doors were closed to the public in early March but our desire to serve the community remained. We were contacted on March 15th and asked if we would be willing to act as a food serving site as a result of COVID-19 school closures. We jumped at the opportunity and began serving food by March 17th. It is incredibly rewarding to help the community in this way, but it has not come without some challenges. Our first challenge came early on with the way the children picked up the food. In the first week, children were lining up one behind the other to receive their food. Our Deputy Librarian, Mary Helen Avalos had a great idea to turn our parking lot area into a drive-thru, so children could stay safe in their own vehicles. Another challenge came in the packing up of the food. While all the food is prepared off-site (at our city’s local Dairy Queen), the food consists of separate components to make a sack to-go lunch meal and to make a sack to-go breakfast meal for the next day, for every child. Our solution was to make an assembly line with 2 staff members packing lunches and 2 packing breakfasts, while maintaining physical distance and wearing PPE (gloves and masks) ahead of the families arriving. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/_compresseds/6fde5f73-2…] The children are served the to-go lunches/breakfasts daily for 1 hour, 11:30AM-12:30PM Monday through Friday. It is based on a first come, first serve basis. We use the serving time to not only feed the children, but we also use it to connect with the families. For example, our lunches will often include materials such as Census 2020 bookmarks and even coloring books to help explain COVID-19 to children. When we started on March 17th, we were giving food to 50 children, and now we are up to serving 160 children to meet the demand. There are other sites that give out food to children in our area as well, but the library is a central part of our community. People feel comfortable coming to our location because they recognize the library as a place to get help. All of us at the Globe Public Library are grateful for this chance to make a difference because we are all in this together. ________________________________ Breakfast/lunch distribution is handled by Globe Public Library staff Mary Helen Avalos, Effie Dillon, Rayel Starling, Melissa Williams and library director Adrea Ricke. Kelly Fordon program recommendation

The Grosse Pointe Public Library recently held a live Zoom event with Michigan author Kelly Fordon. Her book of short stories, I Have the Answer, was published by Wayne State University Press in April 2020. We originally planned to have an in-library book launch event, but we actually reached a larger audience via Zoom. Kelly's novel in stories, Garden for the Blind, was a 2016 Michigan Notable book. She is the author of the poetry book Goodbye Toothless House as well as poetry chapbooks. I highly recommend her book and her presentation. Read by Grade Three Law Update Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Governor Whitmer's Executive Order 2020-35 (COVID-19), specifically Section IX(C), strict compliance with rules and procedures around MCL 380.1280f(5) is temporarily suspended. This compiled law is best known as the Read by Grade Three Law. Section IX(C) of Executive Order 2020-35 relieves a district of the obligations imposed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year to retain a pupil in grade three. Library programs on the radio in Alaska

It's not 1950s entertainment, but a nostalgic way children in even the most remote Alaska communities - many with unreliable internet - can overcome further isolation brought on by the coronavirus. The public library in the small town of Homer got creative when it had to close during the pandemic, partnering with a radio station to bring a popular story hour to preschoolers stuck at home. Youth services librarian Claudia Haines reads some children's books - chosen to appeal to older kids or adults listening in, too - Thursday mornings on KBBI, which serves the town of 5,000 and surrounding villages. The AM station is among several radio broadcasters that have served far-flung Alaska communities for decades, chronicling their histories and cultures and even sending personal messages on the air for people far from the limited road system in the vast state. "Radio has such a storytelling tradition," Haines said. "It's nice to see it put to use." The program is among ways libraries nationwide are adapting during the pandemic, according to a recent survey by the Public Library Association. Of the more than 2,500 libraries that responded, over 90% said their buildings have closed. Like the Homer library, they have expanded online services like streaming media and e-books. They're also contributing to their communities. The El Dorado County Library in California is getting help using its 3-D printers to make face shields for hospitals and other facilities. The St. Louis County Library in Missouri partnered with a diaper bank to provide a drive-through emergency diaper service at four branches. In Alaska, the radio story hour, which is also live-streamed on KBBI's website, has dance breaks to let young listeners burn off some energy. The program ends with time for kids to call in. "They were really happy to call and say hello and have me recognize them," Haines said. "The spirit of the first program was, 'Hey, we've been apart while the library is closed and we're all staying home, but we're still here together in our community, and this is a way to stay connected.'" Four-year-old Polly Fraley, a regular at the library's story time, said her favorite part of a recent show was "when everybody ate dinner" in the book "Thank you, Omu!" by Oge Mora. Her mother, Cassy Quinlan, said her family has listened to the radio station for a long time, even communicating with friends who have spotty internet through KBBI's "bush lines" service, which allows locals to have messages read over the air. They can include anything from birthday greetings to love poems, Quinlan said. Polly and her 6-year-old sister, Lucy, have been missing the library since it closed in mid-March. But the pandemic "is bringing people back to simplicity, you know, the basics - radio, reading, doing a puzzle," Quinlan said. Haines, the librarian, said she jumped at the chance to connect again with families. Hosting the show is one of the few times she leaves the house, working with a single radio staffer to get it on the air. The story hour is part of the station's larger effort to keep people connected despite their isolation, KBBI development director Loren Barrett said. It's also added weekly COVID-19 briefings with officials and a show called "Social Distance" that features live music and food talk for listeners craving new recipes. "Radio, particularly in a small community like that ... can really focus in on children and do excellent work," retired broadcaster Al Bramstedt Jr. said.
