CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY (KS) PUBLIC LIBRARY - Closes this Sunday, October 18, 2020! The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, a municipal corporation governed by an appointed Board of Trustees, seeks an accomplished Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is committed to sparking curiosity and connections through literacy and learning in Topeka and Shawnee County, Kansas. The new leader of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, Library Journal/Gale's 2016 Library of the Year, <https://tscpl.org/> will be ready to enhance the Library's role in a world that continues to change. Transforming the lives of its citizens through its five community impact goals<https://tscpl.org/about/community-impact-goals>, the CEO reports to a ten-member governing Board and works collaboratively with The Library Foundation, the Friends of the Library, a stellar staff (213 positions), and community partners to provide essential library services and programs charting a clear course. This award-winning Library, supported by a statutory mill levy which provides an annual $22.3 million budget, has a 21st-century landmark building featuring the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, the Millennium Café, and the Chandler "Booktique" (bookstore and gift shop). In 2019, more than 2,000 people walked through its doors daily and checked out more than 2.3 million items. The library's mobile services, augmented with a new fleet of vehicles, traveled across the County and provided services to 55 senior living facilities, 80 preschools and many homebound customers. The Chief Executive Officer formulates and oversees implementation of library goals, policy recommendations, procedures, programs, and projects in accordance with policies established by the Library Board of Trustees and mandated by the laws of the state of Kansas. Providing vision, direction, and leadership, the CEO is responsible for, but not limited to, the delivery of library services with an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion; oversight of human resources focusing on mentoring and coaching a committed staff; development and presentation of the annual budget; coordination of collaborative, strong relationships with the Library Board, the Library Foundation, and the Friends of the Library; and a continued knowledge and interest of current trends in leading for the future of the Library. Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program and five years of progressively responsible administrative and managerial experience in public libraries. Essential attributes include personal integrity, demonstrated skill and experience with fiscal oversight and budgeting, excellent interpersonal and consensus-building skills, a focus on creating a culture of trust and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and demonstrated ability to provide leadership throughout the Library promoting the values set forth in the Library's mission. In addition, the CEO should possess demonstrable communication skills that span the library, its staff and stakeholders and the community at large. The CEO, through care, compassion, and energy will galvanize organizational efforts to position the Library at the forefront of library service. A sense of curiosity, creativity, and innovation; a thorough knowledge of current trends, technologies and "best practices" for libraries; and prior successful experience reporting to a governing Board are desirable attributes and qualifications for the next TSCPL CEO. SDL serves a population of 27,920 residents of the cities of Durand, Owosso, and Bennington, Owosso, and Rush Townships, with a current budget of $948,720. A voted millage is in place through 2021. The library staff includes 26 employees (13 FTE's). The library has branches in Owosso and Durand housing more than 97,000 volumes. In addition to traditional library services, an emphasis has been placed on local history and genealogy (including James Oliver Curwood and railroad history) print and digital archives and children's programming. Update on Open Meetings Act

Amendments to Open Meetings Act Pass Senate and House, Head to Governor's Desk October 14, 2020 [image of marquee showing senators votes on SB1108]Late yesterday afternoon, the Michigan House of Representatives passed SB 1108, allowing local governments (including libraries) to continue to meet electronically, under specific circumstances and for a limited period, protecting the safety of the public and public officials while ensuring public participation and transparency for meetings. Late yesterday evening, the Michigan Senate took up a concurrence vote to support it moving immediately to Governor Whitmer's desk for signature. Donna Searight Simons, author of Copper Empire, is available to do virtual presentations via Zoom regarding the 1913 strike in Michigan's Copper Country. We have hosted her here in St. Clair County in the past, and we had a great response. In 1913, thousands of copper miners went out on strike in the Copper Country. This labor strike tore the community in two; some people sympathized with the miners' dangerous working conditions, while others sided with mine and business owners. As the strike entered its sixth month, the women's auxiliary decided to hold a Christmas party for miners and their families at Italian Hall in Calumet. During the party, someone shouted fire which caused people to panic and run down the stairwell. When someone tripped on the stairs, it caused a domino effect as people trampled onto one another. Over 70 people were killed. Donna has done many presentations on this topic at libraries throughout Michigan and has written a work of historical fiction titled Copper Empire. Her Power Point presentation is 40 minutes long and includes historical photos borrowed from Michigan Technological University along with a video. Dear Michlib-L, We recently hosted retired journalist and first-time author Marney Rich Keenan and she was incredibly passionate, knowledgeable and engaging with our audience. She just published her book: "The Snow Killings: Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation" which was a personal topic for many of our attendees. Marney and I had planned on an hour event as a whole, but we received so many questions that the event ended after just a little over an hour and half. I highly recommend engaging her as a virtual presenter. I did assist and run her presentation from my computer while she talked, as this was her first one. She encouraged questions, looked forward to the interaction and really took the time with patience to answer every single one.
