*CROMAINE DISTRICT LIBRARY* *Hartland, Michigan* *Adult Services Manager* *Starting Salary Range $50,500 - $53,000 * *37.5 hours/week* *REPORTS TO:* Library Director *SUPERVISES:* Adult Services librarians and department volunteers *DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES* · Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate services to adults. · Prepare and manage the budget for the Adult Services Department. · Assist the Library Director with long term planning and meeting Strategic Plan goals. · Investigate and recommend best practices that effectively improve services to the community. · Prepare reports, gather statistics, and coordinate collection of library output measures. · Assist in the search for community sponsorships, gifts, partnerships, and grants in collaboration with members of the management team. · Provide effective, positive, and personalized reference and reader’s advisory services. · Assist and instruct library users and staff using electronic information sources and the computer catalog as well as devices that provide access to both. · Coordinate collection development including the selection and withdrawal of materials for the reference, circulating, and adult periodical collections. · Arrange for, carry out, and evaluate programs, exhibits, displays, and other activities of community interest. · Assist with newsletter, website, social media and other forms of communication to the community, in collaboration with the management team. · Supervise staff and schedule the work of the Adult department. · Act as back-up for the members of the management team, including the Library Director, as needed. · Participate in professional meetings and continuing education activities. *MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * *Education, certification, training, and experience* · Requires a master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and 3 to 5 years’ experience in public library adult services. Supervisory experience preferred. *Skills and Abilities* · Genuine interest in providing superior public service. · Ability to achieve and maintain cooperative and effective relations with members of the general public and with other employees. · Knowledge of popular reading materials, reference tools, and electronic resources. · Ability to work independently and take initiative. · Ability to use a variety of technologies, including operating systems, integrated library systems, software for communications and graphics, web design, and others. · Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. · Flexibility in scheduling, including the ability to work evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. *PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, and occasionally required to travel to other locations. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee regularly must lift and/or move moderately heavy objects. Specific vision requirements of the job include near vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. *BENEFITS* Full-time benefits include paid vacation, sick and business time (available after completion of the 6-month introductory period), plus holiday pay, paid birthday and paid bereavement leave. Health insurance (an HSA plan) is provided for the employee and the employee may purchase health insurance for dependents at the library’s rates. Dental insurance, optical coverage, life insurance, short- and long-term disability are all provided for the employee. You may purchase several AFLAC plans at the library’s rate with a pre-tax deduction. TIAA-CREF defined contribution retirement is provided at 10% employer contribution and immediately vested with no required employee match. Birding and Pet First Aid presenters

Hello everyone! Last year we had Robyn Elman and Paul Steil from the New York City area come to Michigan libraries (they had audiences of 50-100 and were awesome!!!) to talk about birding as well as pet first aid (two different programs). Robyn just reached out to me and said they are coming back and hoping to fill the week of May 11 with more library programs. (We have already booked Tuesday, May 12 @ 7 p.m.) If you’re interested in hosting them at your library, please note they offer two options: Birding: “A mix of learning about birds in your area, apps and tools to help identify birds and starting to get into birding, basic tips on photographing birds, Instagram, and our worldwide birding travels.” Pet first aid: (This is actually how they earn their living.) “Intro that includes a talk about poisons, learning how to muzzle a pet (with practice on stuffed animals), how to create an emergency preparedness kit, and traveling with pets in the car.” Robyn says she has done “tons of live news locally and even on Fox and Friends”. RFID inventory "wands"

Hello RFID Libraries - We recently added RFID technology and are now looking at our first inventory project. I am wondering if any of you can recommend the use of the RFID wands for inventory. If so, what do you use and if you would share pros and cons, that would be helpful. If you do not use an inventory wand, what is your process for inventory - do you take an RFID pad to the stacks or do you bring books to the desk or do you barcode scan? Do any of you rent an inventory cart from a vendor? Library lawyers

We currently work with a local lawyer, but there are times that it would be helpful to work with someone who specializes in library/municipal law. Do you have suggestions for someone I should reach out to? We are located in SW MI, I'm not sure how lawyers feel about traveling too far. Hi library people! We recently had a mother stop in whose child has been one of our most regular readers. Her daughter is in 3rd grade and was recently tested @ a 9th grade reading level. The child has abandoned reading because nothing seems to speak to her. We are starting to put some type of a list together for the mother / daughter to check out but we would love more suggestions from the collective brain. Actual titles, series, or websites with suggestions would be much appreciated. We don't want to lose this child as a patron and lover of reading and want to help a very good but very frustrated mother. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
