Performs year round upkeep of library grounds through picking up trash, cutting grass, raking, pickup of litter, shoveling of snow, salting of parking lots/sidewalks, and care of shrubbery and plantings. Experience: This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Three years of facilities/maintenance experience in a related building. Possession of a Michigan motor vehicle operator's license. Schedule: 25 hours per week, primarily on mornings, nights and weekends. Occasionally will be required to work a day shift during the week. In writing *Recollections and Reflections*: *From a WWII Shanghai Ghetto to Journalism, Politics* *and other Journeys along the Way*, Berl Falbaum, stressed that he wanted to capture stories that he believed needed to be saved, from which he learned important lessons, and others might find valuable. “This is not about any achievements,” said Falbaum. “These stories were important to me and I hope others will find them useful as well.” The foreword was written by William M. (Bill) Brodhead, former congressman from Detroit’s 17th District. Among the public officials and journalists already praising the book, are: Nolan Finley*, *editorial page editor, *The Detroit News*, called it “captivating.” Alan Hitsky, who held several editor positions at *the Detroit Jewish News*, said it is a “fascination look back at world and Detroit history…” Michigan Appeals Court Judge Mark J. Cavanagh wrote, “The book is not only good, but is culturally and historically important.” Herschel Fink, *Detroit Free Press* legal counsel, said the book was “beautifully written and compelling…” Michael Layne, president of the Marx Layne & Co. public relations firm, described the book as “riveting.” Among his many stories, Falbaum writes about covering the reaction in Detroit to the assassination of President Kennedy; the 1967 Detroit riot; and the controversy at the defunct Bendix Corporation in the early 1980s, perhaps one the biggest scandals in modern corporate history. He also reports on “lighter subjects” such as stories from his extensive travels, including watching a bullfight from inside the ring, swimming with dolphins in the open ocean, and his participation as a supernumerary (an extra) in four operas. Falbaum’s career includes ten years as a general assignment and political reporter for *The Detroit News*, fifteen years in corporate public relations and four years in as administrative aide to Michigan’s lieutenant governor. He has published nine other books, one of which, *Shanghai Remembered*: *Stories of Jews Who Escaped to Shanghai from Nazi Europe*, won an IPPY award from the Independent Publishers Association. For 45 years, Falbaum was an adjunct faculty member in the journalism department at Wayne State University in Detroit. Falbaum is donating half of all proceeds from the book to EnPuzzlement, a Toledo, Ohio, non-profit organization that, since 2009, had provided assistance to organizations that help the needy with food, hygiene items, cleaning products and medical supplies. Call for Nominations for Small and Rural Libraries Conference Awards 2020

We all enjoy the feeling of being recognized by our peers for a job well done. This is your opportunity to put together a nomination packet for one of four awards being given at the Small and Rural Libraries Conference in Traverse City, April 13-15, 2020. Please consider who you know that meets the quality of excellence in the profession. Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? Do you have a Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels? We want to hear from you! Self-nominations are accepted for the Mendel award that goes to a library and it includes a cash prize of $1,000! Nominations are due by Friday, January 17, 2020 to norriss2(a)michigan.gov or by post to Sonya Schryer Norris, Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI 48909. There will be four awards in 2020. The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Patron Service Award (includes children's services) * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) CRITERIA Criteria 1: Nomination packet (1-5 points): Does the nomination packet contain letters of support from appropriate individuals such as respected community members, respected members of the library community, library patrons, library friends and library board members concerning the person or library's accomplishments? Criteria 2: Unique accomplishments (1-10 points): Does the nomination packet contain examples of accomplishments that make this person or library stand out from the other nominations? What's unique for a small or rural library might be within normal operations for a mid or large library. Criteria 3: Quality of accomplishments (1-10 points): Does the person or library exemplify the best in current library practices? Are they doing more than old-fashioned or routine library service and truly striving for excellence as identified by modern-day best practices including but not limited to activities such as community engagement, diversity of collections & programming, and progressive policies? Please note that Library Cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination.
