inquiry on bed bugs

Hello everyone, Over the past few years, we've had a significant increase in patrons returning items with bed bugs, and were wondering how other libraries handle these situations. Currently, we inspect items for bugs and signs of bugs at check in. Anything that has bugs is discarded, and anything that was either in the drop box with or in the household at the same time as affected items is treated in our ZappBug heat box. The patron's borrowing privileges are restricted until they provide proof of a clear inspection. Has your library noticed an increase in pest issues? Do you check your items for bed bugs? Do you discard or treat items, and how do you treat them? How do you handle the patrons, and do you charge them for the items? Thank you for any insight. I'm not sure of the numbers, but I assume there are over 1,000 people subscribing to Mich-L. If it takes a library staff member 30 seconds to open read and process an email, libraries are spending real money for staff to use and monitor the Mich-L list. Generally, I think this is money well spent. This morning, on another listserv, I receive 11 messages about a library system's automation problem. For libraries not on that shared system, each of our employees got 11 spam messages. We have 130 employees and all though many of them (pages, custodial staff, office staff, etc.) do not subscribe to that list, many of our librarians and managers do. We paid them a salary to delete those messages. I've seen this on Mich-L as well. Just before the 4th of July, there was a flurry of postings that libraries were closing for the 4th. This was a waste of time. I doubt there was a library open on the 4th of July and if there was a library open I would have been interested in hearing who they were. There occasionally is a flurry of announcements about story times or other programs. I'm really only interested in hearing about very unique programs or programs that caused or are causing a stir (drag queen storytimes). I ask that people pause a moment before they share. Is this information the entire state needs to hear. When you extrapolate the costs across the state, is this really a good use of libraries' scarce funding? Apply now to be a 2020 ALA Emerging Leader

The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for the 2020 class of Emerging Leaders (EL). Details on the program criteria as well as a link to the application can be found on the Emerging Leaders web page<http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/leadership/emergingleaders/>. The ALA EL program is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations. An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school library media affiliate will sponsor approximately two-thirds of the selected applicants. Each sponsor will contribute a minimum of $1,000 toward expenses of attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference ($500 for each conference). Sponsorship is not required for participation in the program. A list of sponsoring units is included as part of the online application. Dearborn's Main Branch is Closed for Renovation

For those not already aware, the Henry Ford Centennial Library (HFCL) has been closed to the public since May 20, 2019, and will remain closed until Fall 2019 for a major renovation project. To serve our residents during the closure, we have extended the open hours at both the Bryant Branch Library and the Esper Branch Library to Monday-Thursday 9:30 am to 8:30 pm and Friday and Saturday 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. The planned renovations are extensive, and HFCL cannot remain open during this time. As with major renovation projects, all dates are subject to change. The project includes: * Installation of a new energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC) * Replacement of existing lights with energy-efficient lighting * Renovation of the second-floor restrooms * Reorganization the second-floor layout of the book stacks * Additional electrical outlets * Replacing the wallpaper * Creation of a first-floor snack lounge with vending machines. Also, the previously unused east-side of the mezzanine will be updated to include: * An additional conference room * Several additional group study rooms * A makerspace * A computer lab * A digitization lab * More single-person study booths. Funds to support the HVAC renovation and replacement of existing lighting were made available through a bond sale. Library Capital Improvement project money will support all additional improvements.
