The program is designed for public librarians to model early literacy skill development directly to families and engage in outreach to early childhood centers, classrooms and daycares throughout their community. Book suggestions should be appropriate for the 0-5 age group and be interactive, engaging read-aloud. CSLP: Libraries and Summer Food CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being Committee (CCWB) has created two resources to support and facilitate public library participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and other ways to help connect kids and teens with healthy food when school is out. One is an online Libraries and Summer Food how-to guide now available on the CSLP website. The other is a two-sided Summer Meals factsheet for libraries, featuring key statistics about child hunger and SFSP, brief talking points for library involvement, and a brief step-by-step guide to determining SFSP eligibility and getting started. Later in the day we will take the theme a step further and dive into the world of Virtual Reality with Kevin McDonough, Reference Librarian at Northern Michigan University, learning about different VR equipment, experiencing a virtual reality for yourself, and resources to support programming in your library with VR. In the News: PBS Books Launches A National Library Engagement Program<http://www.pbs.org/book-view-now/blogs/news/2019/03/27/pbs-books-launches-a…> - Survey results "The results are clear; libraries are eager to take advantage of PBS Books programs and trust PBS Books as a partner. According to the survey, 92% of libraries have a social media presence, and a majority said they were interested in having access to quality social media content to share and utilizing an archive of more than 650 high quality digital PBS Books videos. The survey also showed that 70% of libraries participated in activities related to The Great American Read, a series that aired on PBS in 2018 and promoted viewer participation. This indicates libraries' interest in utilizing PBS content about books to spark community engagement. Most libraries reported that they would be interested in programs that allowed them to screen PBS shows, to provide digital access to author interviews and other literary content, and to highlight significant things happening at libraries." Bins for STEM Kits

Hello Library Friends, If your library has purchased bins or boxes or other containers of some type to house circulating materials like STEM kits, could you please let me know what brands you have been happy with, as well as if there are any that have not worked well for your library? I'm looking to purchase about twenty and I want them to be sturdy enough to last. So far, I've been considering Sterilite ClearView, Ziplock WeatherShield, IRIS WeatherTight, and Rubbermaid Roughneck, but I'm open to suggestions. *Please excuse cross-posting* The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is looking for stories from libraries who have done, or are doing, community engagement work. We are interested in learning what that experience has looked like in your library and what the results have been for your institution/community. Please take our survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CEstories Examples of community engagement work might include, but are definitely not limited to: * hosting a conversation with residents to discuss a divisive topic * an information campaign to educate residents about a topic before an election or referendum * learning what services or programs a certain segment of the community needs and revising library offerings/activities based on what you heard Your submission may be used as an example in a forthcoming book, "Empowering Communities: The Library and Community Engagement" (working title), edited by Mary Davis Fournier and Sarah Ostman, to be published by ALA Editions; or featured on ALA's Programming Librarian<http://www.programminglibrarian.org/> or Libraries Transforming Communities<http://www.ala.org/tools/librariestransform/libraries-transforming-communit…> websites.
