PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Provides Reference, Readers' Advisory, and Roving services to the public. o Accurately and efficiently answers patron questions in various forms. o Assists and trains patrons in the navigation of the library website and the library's online services. o Assists patrons with self-checkout stations and other library equipment. o Responds to patron questions regarding their library account, including holds, interlibrary loan, program registration, and account issues, following established policies and procedures to select appropriate solutions and communicate options to the patron. o Demonstrates and troubleshoots the use of equipment, PCs, and related software as needed. o Locates and retrieves library materials requested by patrons according to established procedures. o Performs reader's advisory by suggesting age-appropriate materials to patrons. o Maintains neat and orderly library appearance. o Assists at all public service desks as needed. o Assists with checkout, check-in, and shelving functions as needed, following established guidelines and procedures. o Greets and assists patrons throughout the entire library, assessing patron needs and referring as needed. o Refers patron queries and issues beyond the Librarian's scope of authority to library administration. * Researches, plans and presents programs and develops outreach and partnership opportunities that meet the needs of the community as outlined in the Strategic Plan or in response to patron demand. o Proposes programs to the Program Librarian. o Completes paperwork associated with programming, following established procedures. o Sets up and cleans up for programs. o Works collaboratively with community entities and partners as a representative of the library. * Selects, develops, and maintains collections as assigned by the Collections Development Specialist. o Reviews, updates, and revises Collection Development Plan for assigned collection areas. o Maintains assigned collections according to established standards. o Makes budget recommendations for assigned collections to the Collections Development Specialist and stays within approved budget. o Selects materials for assigned collections and orders according to established procedures. o Makes recommendations to the Collections Development Specialist to establish new collections, or end collections that no longer meet the needs of the community. o Prepares displays as assigned. * Other Duties and Responsibilities o Provides training, mentoring, and guidance to interns, practicum students, colleagues, and volunteers as assigned. o Compiles, reviews, and/or interprets statistical data. o Participates in the development of long- and short-term plans for the department and the organization. o Independently or with others researches, recommends, implements and monitors projects as assigned. o Serves on workgroups/committees and participates in initiatives as assigned, both within the library and with outside entities, partners, or associations. o Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contribute content as appropriate. o May act as Librarian-in-Charge in the absence of library administration. o Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach. o Ensures building security after library closing (check doors, clear the building and set alarm) in the absence of Building Monitor, as necessary. o Writes detailed, clear and concise incident reports, obtaining case numbers in the event of police involvement. o Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program. * One year of experience in a customer service environment. * Working knowledge of common computer applications, including Microsoft Office and the Internet. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Ability to complete special projects while maintaining routine duties. * Knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to fundamental principles of open access to library materials and the privacy rights of patrons. * Ability to effectively exercise initiative and independent judgment, and assume responsibility without close supervision. * Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, ensure safety, and respond to emergencies. * Ability to persuade, negotiate and resolve conflict. * Ability to work independently to analyze and evaluate current library services, programs and practices and to revise and develop programs and services as needed to respond to patron needs * Ability to work with patrons of varied backgrounds, ages, and abilities. * Demonstrated ability to translate methods used in other libraries and industries to suit the needs of the library. * Written and verbal communication skills at the level typically acquired with the completion of a Master's degree. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Coursework related to area of focus/department. * Prior professional experience in a public library. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS * Ability to lift and carry boxes up to 25 lbs. and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, or crouch. * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally. * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. This person will perform all library functions, as well as manage a small staff. *Essential Functions:* · Provides direct public service at the circulation desk, including reference interviews, reader’s advisory, technical support, policy explanation and enforcement, volunteer coordination, and meeting room scheduling. · Oversees technical service and interlibrary loan department, including supply management and budgeting. · As a member of the library management team, provides leadership to and supervises circulation, tech service and MeL staff, including training, regular staff meetings, and assisting in hiring and evaluation. Delegates duties to staff and establishes strong coordination to achieve departmental goals. · Serves as the authority on automation issues; performs maintenance and repair on circulation equipment. · Maintains circulation workflows, including shelving, over dues and collections. · Maintains patron database, including updating and new patron registration. · Participates in short and long-range planning; recommends policy and establishes procedures; develops action plans; leads local planning efforts of new or expanded facilities. Gathers staff input for the purpose of establishing department goals that correlate to MCDL mission statement. · Coordinates and supervises the work of staff; participates on interview teams and helps select staff; provides training in branch operations; assigns tasks; monitors, evaluates, and provides feedback on work performance; plans and conducts staff meetings; oversees the preparation of work schedules; verifies and approves timesheets on a bi-weekly basis. · Participates in the selection and ordering of materials in accordance with materials budget for the Library's collection based on patron interests, statistical reports and information needs. Oversees the maintenance of the collection including the shifting of books, weeding and discarding of materials, displaying of new or seasonal materials and reviewing donated materials. · Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds, furniture, and equipment, by communicating budget and facility needs with library director and providing assistance or taking responsibility as needed. · Oversees the recording and submission of appropriate statistics. · Oversees the counting and recording of monies taken in and ensures the balancing of the cash drawer daily. · May provide technical support and assistance to Library staff and patrons in the use of computer and other library equipment; performs routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting tasks. Effectively facilitates access to MCDL's digital collection by providing demonstrations of and assistance with multiple format eReader devices. · Represents MCDL professionally and in the community. May write and submit local grants. · Performs other duties as assigned by Library Director and/or Assistant Director. *Requirements:* · Bachelor’s degree required, MLS preferred. · Ability to travel between work locations and related places of business as needed. · Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and practices of public library operations. The incumbent is also required to have comprehensive knowledge of the policies and procedures of Mason County District Library. · Considerable knowledge of available circulating materials and basic reference sources. · Demonstrated knowledge of public library computer hardware and software applications. · Demonstrated management and leadership skills necessary to plan and administer the services of a library. · Ability to work under general supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment and discretion subject to Library policies and procedures and professional practices. · Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work with a wide variety of individuals and establish effective working relationships with local government officials, civic leaders, community group leaders, Library patrons and personnel. · Analytical ability to research information; maintains statistical records and summarizes findings in a written document. · Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment. The Board of Trustees of the Hesperia Community Library (population 5,933) seeks an enthusiastic, resourceful and community focused individual to serve as their Library Director. The Hesperia Community Library serves 4 townships in rural Oceana and Newaygo Counties, 30 miles northeast of Muskegon and approximately 50 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. The library is a pristine 11,900 square foot building that is the crown jewel of this welcoming and picturesque community. This is a 30 hour per week position. Hesperia Community Library is a Class II library and a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. Salary range is $33,000-$38,000 with no benefits. Summary of responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for all library operations: creating, establishing and implementing plans, programs, and policies adopted by the Board of Trustees in the areas of financial management, program and collection development, staff development and supervision, and facility maintenance and community outreach. Summary of qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years work experience in a public library with at least 2 years of management experience. A required certificate for a Michigan Class II library. A Master’s Degree in Library Sciences from an AAL accredited institution or another advanced degree is preferred but not required. Essential responsibilities and qualifications:  A willingness to understand, support and meet the needs and interests of the community.  Ability to plan, analyze, evaluate, supervise, and direct library needs and services. Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions.  Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the library board and staff, the general public, community and business leaders and school administrators and faculty.  Extensive knowledge of library budgeting, district library law and library practices and policies.  Strong communication skills in promoting library services and the value of the library including the use of social media and grant opportunities.  Ability to understand and utilize established and new technology including software, hardware and library and business applications and tools.  Experience in materials selection and collection management and thorough knowledge of print, electronic, audiovisual and information technologies and resources.  Required certification for Class II library. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, preferred but not required.  Knowledge of Lakeland Library Cooperative, Library of Michigan and Michigan Library Association.  Willingness to attend workshops and take advantage of professional development opportunities.  Must be bondable.
