Best practices guidelines

Greetings Michigan Library Community, This is a best practices update for posting to Michlib-l. We welcome your participation on Michlib-l. There are a few guidelines that help improve the experience for everyone: 1. If you ask for group input on a topic, offer to collect the responses and then re-post them to the list so everyone can benefit. Be sure to embed those responses in the body of your message. 2. Please keep in mind when composing your messages that attachments are removed from posts for digest subscribers and in the archives. For maximum reach, embed the text you wish readers to see in the body of your message. If an attachment is especially important for its images, formatting or other reasons, upload it to your website and then link to it in your message to Michlib-l. 3. Do not post replies that are meant for one person to the entire list. You can accomplish this by using the "Reply" feature and not "Reply All." And, of course, a little patience goes a long way. We've all accidentally posted something to a list that was only meant for one person so gentleness with each other is helpful as well. Epson TM-U2200 Receipt Printers - Best Offer

Good afternoon, The Roseville Public Library in Macomb County has three receipt printers, Epson TM-U220D, Model M188D. They require ink cartridges. We purchased them four to five years ago. They work well, however we needed to upgrade our receipt printers to to new models that use thermal paper. If anyone is interested in purchasing them, I'll take the best offer. Library Transform Communities Grant Applications

The American Library Association (ALA) invites library workers to apply for a new annual grant to support innovative and meaningful community engagement efforts in libraries. The Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant<http://www.ala.org/tools/programming/LTCEG> will provide $2,000 for a school, public, academic, tribal or special library to expand its community engagement efforts. Libraries are invited to apply by designing and outlining activities for a library-led community engagement project. Project activities to be covered by the grant may include developing community engagement programs and services; partnering with a community agency that builds the capacity of the community to address an important concern/issue; or creating a program or event that connects the library to a community-identified aspiration or concern. Community engagement is the process of working collaboratively with community members ¬— be they library users, residents, faculty, students or local organizations — to address issues for the betterment of the community. In May 2019, ALA announced that it had surpassed its original $50,000 fundraising goal to support the creation of the Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant, raising a total of $70,000 from 130 individuals. The initiative was made possible by a matching grant from former ALA president and longtime generous supporter Nancy Kranich. “Thanks to our work in ALA, libraries of all types have unleashed the power of engaging their communities, working collaboratively to advance their aspirations and concerns, particularly for those voices rarely heard,” said Kranich, a past president of ALA who teaches a new generation of civically focused librarians in the Masters of Information program at Rutgers University. “I’m grateful that so many people have stepped forward to join me in supporting this vital work. Together, we can ensure that more libraries develop and share innovative approaches that demonstrate what’s possible when we turn outward toward our communities.” The Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant is part of Libraries Transform Communities (LTC), ALA’s community engagement initiative. Since 2014, LTC has reimagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. 2020 Imagine Your Story posters & art update

Dear Summer Library Programmers, In November the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) put out this statement<http://www.cslpreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/2020-artwork-statement.…> on the 2020 Artwork. Immediately following the release of this statement, Luke Kralik, CSLP Organizational Coordinator, began working with the CSLP website team, the graphic design team, and the warehouse to remove anything containing the offensive images and began the process of printing new, updated items to replace reading records and posters. Once this was done, Luke and Karen Day began to adjust orders. They have both been working tirelessly to make sure libraries receive replacement items if they have been requested. Updating orders for our member libraries is our priority right now. However, as a non-profit, CSLP has limited staff who are putting other CSLP projects on hold to focus their attention on the adjusted orders. Please be patient during this process. Unfortunately, CSLP could stop processing orders placed before November 19th. Please note that all orders placed before this date will still include any items that have been removed from and replaced on the online store (reading records, posters.) If you ordered before that date and do not want to use these items, you can receive a store credit for the cost of the items by contacting the CSLP office directly. If you do not plan to use the removed items, please go ahead and destroy them in-house. Please do not return them to CSLP. All of the artwork included with the online manual has had the offensive imagery removed. The online manual is up-to-date, which all Michigan public libraries can access through www.cslpreads.org<http://www.cslpreads.org>. Rules of Use<https://www.cslpreads.org/membership-information/rules-of-use/> were revised prior to CSLP's annual meeting in September 2019. They now allow for libraries to use the artwork on materials used to execute their summer reading programs. This includes reading logs, posters, certificates, etc. Due to limited resources and a short timeline, CSLP has only been able to provide 1 poster replacement. The Library of Michigan feels it is important for public libraries to have access to all the poster art, and with the Rules of Use<https://www.cslpreads.org/membership-information/rules-of-use/> in mind, created the following updated 2020 posters: http://bit.ly/LM2020CSLP, to be downloaded & printed by public libraries for their summer library program use. Description of how to use the updated poster graphics for public library use: Tabloid Size * Tabloid size is 11"x17" * Can resize easily to 8.5"x11" as well as "flyer poster" size of 5.5" x 8.5" With Bleeds * This is for professional printing. They will print to the edge and then cut down at the bleed marks. * Final size of finished product will be 17" x 23" Without Bleeds * The poster without any professional printing marks. * Size is 17"x23" Please remember that these posters are for public library use. In our current Strategic Plan, we were asked to investigate 501(c)(3) status for our library. For those of you who have done this, I would appreciate getting some feedback: 1. Did you pay an attorney? 2. Did you use free legal assistance? 3. How long did the process take? 4. What are the pros in being a 501(c)(3)? 5. Are there cons in being a 501(c)(3)? 6. Is your Friends group a 501(c)(3)? 7. In retrospect, are you glad your library is a 501(c)(3)? 8. Is the ROI worth it?
