ALA News for September 4, 2018 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Seventeen libraries recognized in American Libraries’ 2018 Library Design Showcase Seventeen new and renovated libraries—and the architecture firms that designed them—have been recognized in American Libraries’ 2018 Library Design Showcase, which appears in the magazine’s September/October issue and is available online. The annual feature, celebrating its 30th year, honors innovative and interesting constructions that effectively address library user needs in the United States and Canada. The highlighted projects, a mix of public, academic, school, and special libraries, were completed between May 1, 2017 and April 30, 2018. http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/09/seventeen-libraries-recogniz… Federal, armed forces, specialized and cooperative libraries merge to form new division of ALA Representatives from the Association of Specialized & Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) and the Federal and Armed Forces Round Table (FAFLRT), announced today that they have merged to form a new division of the American Library Association: the Association of Specialized, Government & Cooperative Library Agencies (ASGCLA). The newly formed ASGCLA will enhance the effectiveness of library service by providing high quality networking, enrichment and educational opportunities for its diverse members. Roosevelt on Trial Did you know that former President Theodore Roosevelt sued the editor of Ishpeming's newspaper, The Iron Ore, for libel? In 1913, George Newlett, publisher of The Iron Ore, printed an article stating that Roosevelt "gets drunk.and not that infrequently." In a week-long trial in the Marquette County Courthouse, Roosevelt denied the accusations and Newlett dramatically announced that he had been mistaken. Roosevelt asked the court for only minor damages, so the jury awarded him six cents. UPCOMING HISTORY HOUNDS Path to Freedom: Cass County and the Underground Railroad Cass County played a key role in the Underground Railroad, as did Quakers James Bonine and Stephen Bogue, who were members of an anti-slavery network. This includes 235 double sided units, 19 individual oversized units and some single-sided set up for periodical display units. Ancestry question

We have a patron who has in the past been able to use her own device on our library wi-fi to access Ancestry Library Edition. As of about a week ago, she cannot, nor can I do so using a personal device. Any ideas? Cindi L. (4 week checkout, circulation coming soon) Please consider attending one of the following workshops to learn how to use one. Tired of STEM?! Well, these workshops will re-energize you! NASA @ My Library STEM Workshops - https://libraryofmichigan.z2systems.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/eventL… Laurie Bone, Senior Curator of Programs at Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium, will be providing a hands-on workshop for public library staff. These STEM workshops will cover the following content: • Overview of relevant astronomy terms and concepts • Strategies for effective deliver of STEM based activities for kids of all ages (children, teen, adults, families) • Ideas for Astronomy activities that librarians can use while developing their program plan • Materials to support at least one of the activities will be provided for each library. (1 per library in attendance) Materials will be provided for each participant to do the activities. This provides an opportunity for the librarians to practice doing the activity, have conversation with the group to identify ways to expand or customize the activity to better fit individual needs, and will provide each participant with a sample project for use in programming. Microfilm Reader and Printer

Free to a good home: Before we discard it, perhaps somebody could use a microfilm reader and printer in good working order. It’s a Minolta MicroSP 2000 and matching Minolta printer. It’s been in regular use until now. See attached photo. The location is Genesee District Library Headquarters at 4195 W. Pasadena Ave., Flint. Just off I-75.
