Hello, CADL is excited to announce the winner of our Capital Area Cover Song Contest, The Swift Brothers! They will receive a $500 gift card from Marshall Music and perform at the 2019 Common Ground Music Festival in Lansing. During our Libraries Rock Summer Reading Program, singers and bands were invited to cover Right Here by local singer Taylor Taylor. The EU & How It Will Affect EVERYONE

As a storyteller,I know it might sound like I'm crying "Wolf!", but as a librarian the tiny aggravation in our Inboxes before on the EU policies were just a warm-up to a truly Internet breaking policy that affects the entire Internet. Today I received this (my own comments follow), also I put in bold type the part affecting everybody: *This is terrible:* The EU Parliament just caved in to giant corporations and passed a massive overhaul of copyright law that threatens to ruin the Internet as we know it. The Parliament approved the requirements for taxes on hyperlinks and censorship upload filters for any website that publishes content. 1 If these policies become law, websites like Reddit and Wikipedia could be wiped out entirely. And it would pave the way for similar policies here at home. But the good news is that the EU Council gets its say, and we're going to make sure these devastating policies are rejected. OpenMedia is pressuring EU member states to stand up to corporate interests and vote down the Link Tax and Censorship Machines for good. Will you donate to help our efforts? https://act.openmedia.org/stl-vote-sbs?src=162909 ] The Link Tax would affect not just Europe, but the entire Internet ecosystem. Requiring websites to use automated content-filtering technology would cost millions of dollars and thousands of manpower hours, likely decimating small online businesses and startups. 2 This legislation stems from pressure from gigantic publishers who would rather destroy the free and open Internet than admit their business models are obsolete. They want Google and other data aggregators to pay up when they link to original sources-but that means that we'd also have to pay, changing the way we share information with each other. 3 And the legislation also calls for content sites to have YouTube-style upload filters. But most sites don't have the manpower or financial resources of YouTube, which paid tens of millions of dollars to put its filter in place. These Censorship Machine requirements will put smaller sites out of business for good. We've seen the effect that Europe's new privacy requirements have had on websites we use here at home-dozens of new terms of service agreements have come through our email inboxes. That's why it's essential that the entire world become involved in the fight against the EU's new copyright legislation. And as a global organization with campaigners around the world, OpenMedia is uniquely suited to take up the fight. ************************************ When this came up earlier I posted on storytelling sites what I could find about the EU Council. The North Central Michigan College Library has a box of 24 metal magazine file boxes available for free (see attached and included pictures). Dimensions of each case are 8" x 8" x 4.5." Does your library have locking DVD and Blu-Ray cases?

Hello, I would like to know how your library stores their DVDs and Blu-Rays. Are they in locking case? If so which locking cases did you purchase? In your opinion what are the pros and cons of the locking cases? if applicable If not in locking cases are the discs stored separately and given to the patron upon check out? Computer guest pass responses

Hello, Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about computer guest passes! For those who are interested, below is the compilation of responses I received. After reviewing the responses and discussing it, we've decided to stop asking patrons for ID in order to get a guest pass at FCL. 16 libraries - No ID required to get a guest pass and they don't ask for the person's name 7 libraries - Ask to see ID, but do not record the person's name 2 libraries - Ask to see ID and record the person's name 1 library - Records the person's name, address and phone number and keeps it on file Best, Jillian Baker Head of Adult Services, Main Library Farmington Community Library Jillian.Baker(a)FarmLib.org 248-848-4312

MeL Minute: MeL's New Look

Greetings Library Community, [cid:image002.png@01D44B5D.74C1D9D0]We are very excited to announce MeL will have a completely new look this fall: new logo, new color scheme, new website. Our new logo will replace the purple and green version we've had for 12 years and you will see this update everywhere that MeL can be found including online, in black and white on MeLCat materials, and on promotional giveaways. The redesign of the MeL logo was an intentional process with 3 goals: * Update to a more contemporary look and feel * Strengthen the visual aspects of the MeL brand * Create logo specifications and usage guidelines to establish consistency MeL's new colors are blue, green, and burgundy and they each represent something different. Blue is the base color of the site and ties into the blue used in the Library of Michigan branding, green represents Library Staff, and burgundy represents Educators. The "e" and the "L" are positioned to form a subtle book. There will be versions of this logo in black and white as well as in singular colors, including green and burgundy for use with our two key audiences. For the entire life of MeL, our emphasis has been to market broadly to the library community and all 9+ million residents in the State of Michigan. While MeL is for use by any Michigan resident, our core purpose is to support Michigan libraries. To that end, we are shifting our focus away from messaging to residents and concentrating on tools, resources, and support specifically for the library and education communities. The changes you see with the MeL logo and website are helping us visually tailor our educational and marketing materials so they are distinct and easy to recognize, while ensuring that everything fits with the larger family of MeL offerings.
