ILS Administrator Position-The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (OH) The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County<https://www.libraryvisit.org/> (OH) seeks an experienced ILS Administrator to manage operation of the systemwide Integrated Library System (ILS) as well as applications related to data collection and analysis. PLYMC is a county-wide system serving 238,823 residents, governed by a 15-member Board, supported by a stellar staff of 169 FTE and a $15,540,797.84 annual operating budget. The ILS Administrator holds the primary responsibility of the day-to-day monitoring, maintenance and ongoing development of the Library's ILS platform, Sierra, and serves as the point of contact for data analytics products such as Innovative's Decision Center and OrangeBoy's Savannah. This includes supporting staff system wide to ensure accuracy, reliability and usability of the ILS and collaborating with other departments throughout the system to identify and coordinate resolution of issues in support of library services. The ILS Administrator works under the direction of the Technology Director but may be consulted directly by staff to advise and resolve difficult or unusual problems. Key responsibilities include (1) Managing the operation and maintaining the function of the ILS and associate software, services, equipment, processes, and vendors; (2) collaborating with departments throughout the system to ensure accuracy, reliability, and usability of the ILS; (3) proactively identifying and resolving problems of server application issues in support of library services; (4) maintaining contracts, ensuring software updates, coordinating planned maintenance, and arranging support calls for ILS-related systems; (5) generating statistical data and reports to provide timely data and analysis to appropriate decision maker; and (6) providing excellent and timely internal customer service responding to employee questions, concerns, and help requests. Minimum qualifications include: (1) three years of experience in ILS administration, database administration, or administration of other business systems; (2) knowledge of and experience with ILS applications, SQL, Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office application suite with an emphasis on Excel; (3) knowledge of principles and practices of public library operations, issues, and trends including circulation standard practices and procedures and other technology resources pertinent to library operations; and (4) strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the capacity to understand and interpret data. A Bachelor's degree in library science, computer science or related field required; a Master's degree in library and information science, computer science or related field is strongly preferred. Experience with ILS systems preferred and experience with Sierra ILS strongly preferred. Compensation. Security of unstaffed areas

Hello! I am looking for libraries that have a level or area that is primarily unstaffed and out of sight of staff members in other areas. Do you have added security measures in those areas (security cameras, a doorbell, etc.) to compensate for the lack of a staff member? If there is an outside entrance to that area do you keep that door locked some, or all, of the time to prevent people from entering? Is it only open when staffed? The Director of the Des Moines Public Library reports to a five-member Library Board of Trustees and partners with city officials as a city department head to achieve the library's mission, goals and objectives within the context of community needs and priorities. Overall responsibilities include: fostering effective internal and external communications with the community, city officials, the Library Board, the Library Foundation, and library staff; proposing recommendations and implementing board policies and operating procedures reflecting the reality of the current economic environment; developing the library staff as a strong team through leadership, mentoring and providing staff development opportunities; providing sound fiscal management while seeking additional revenue sources; working with the Library Foundation; and exploring and developing collaborative relationships with a variety of local, regional and statewide organizations and agencies. Qualifications. A master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program is required. Five years of increasingly responsible management experience in a public library setting is preferred. Experience in a multi-branch library; a minimum of five years of executive level experience as director of a library or deputy, assistant, or associate director of a comparable or larger system; experience reporting to a governing board; and experience in a union environment are all highly desirable. Essential attributes include energy and enthusiasm; personal integrity; and excellent interpersonal skills; thorough knowledge of financial management; collaboration and consensus-building skills; sensitivity, flexibility, and creativity; and a solid understanding of philosophy, trends and "best practices" in the library and information technology fields. MeL Minute: We have new videos-please share them on social media!

Greetings Michigan Library Community, In an effort to demonstrate the importance of IMLS funding to MeL and the enormous impact it has on the lives of every day citizens, we commissioned a series of short videos. Beginning in January, we started featuring one a month on the MeL homepage. All the videos live on our YouTube channel in a playlist called Celebrating MeL<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_AfOuTBGCvvGP7NyeeE8>. We'd like to encourage you to share these videos on your own social media channels. We find that the shorter videos (those lasting about 30 seconds) have the highest rate of viewer completion and we have six of those. They're perfect snippets for embedding on Facebook, Twitter, or your other favorite social networking platform. Just go to the video, click on "Share" beside the thumbs up and thumbs down icons, and this functionality will be available to you. It gives your patrons a feel-good way to support the library by Liking your posts and also provides them with some information they may not know about services they use regularly. Our longer videos also have strong viewer completion rates and they give us time to tell a story from multiple angles. ALA News for March 20, 2018 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARIAN ASSOCIATION ALA Hails Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act as Possible 'Turning Point' The following statement was issued by American Library Association (ALA) President Jim Neal upon the introduction of the Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act (S. 2559) by the bipartisan leadership of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations Committees, Chairmen Grassley and Corker and Ranking Members Feinstein and Menendez, along with Senators Harris, Hatch and Leahy. The Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act amends the U.S. Copyright Act to ensure compliance with the Marrakesh Treaty. Adopted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2013, the Marrakesh Treaty requires countries to enact copyright exceptions that allow the creation and distribution of accessible format copies such as braille, audiobooks or digital files. Neal stated, “The Marrakesh Treaty was a monumental accomplishment five years ago, and libraries were central to its architecture. The Treaty’s ratification by the U.S. Senate and adoption of the Treaty Implementation Act will be a turning point in global information access: it will allow U.S. libraries to create and share accessible format copies of books and other materials across borders to persons with print disabilities – something that 36 other countries are already able to do." http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/03/ala-hails-marrakesh-treaty-i… ALA names Hayden honorary member Carla D. Hayden was elected to honorary membership in the American Library Association (ALA) in action taken by the ALA Council on Sunday, February 11, during the Midwinter Meeting in Denver. Honorary membership, ALA’s highest honor, is conferred in recognition of outstanding contributions of lasting importance to libraries and librarianship. Hayden was nominated in recognition of her passionate dedication to equity of access and her historic appointment as the first woman and first African American to the post of Librarian of Congress. Prior to this historic appointment, Hayden served as director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore for 23 years. There she transformed the deteriorating library system into a vital community service agency.
