The University of Michigan-Dearborn's 2017 Young Authors’ Festival <http://library.umd.umich.edu/yaf/> (YAF) has multiple special events this year: • Writing contest <http://library.umd.umich.edu/yaf/writingcontest.php> for children in grades 3-5 • Half-day event featuring Kris Remenar <http://kristenremenar.com/> and Matt Faulkner <http://www.mattfaulkner.com/>, the author and the illustrator of the children’s book “Groundhog’s Dilemma,” along with fun breakout sessions for children and adults, a ceremony for the winners of the writing contest, and a book signing • "Golden Legacy: Original Art from 75 Years of Golden Books <http://library.umd.umich.edu/berkowitz/exhibitions/2017/goldenbooks.php>" Exhibition of 65 pieces of original art work used in Little Golden Books (celebrating their 75th anniversary). • Exhibition reception with special guest speaker Diane Muldrow <http://www.dianemuldrow.com/>, editorial director of Golden Books and author of “Everything Thing I Need to Know I Learned from a Little Golden Book” • "Family Afternoon with Little Golden Books" event with activities for children in grades K-2. Important 2017 dates to remember: • Oct. 9 (Monday) is the first day of registration for the festival (highly recommended) • Oct. 13 (Friday) is the deadline for writing contest entries • Nov. 3 (Friday, 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.) is the reception for the “Golden Legacy” art exhibition; Berkowitz Gallery, located on the 3rd floor of the Mardigian Library • Nov. 11 (Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) is the half-day festival in the Mardigian Library • Nov. 18 (Saturday, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.) is the half-day family event in the Berkowitz Gallery • Oct. 27 – Dec. 17 is the “Golden Legacy” art exhibition in the Berkowitz Gallery A special grant from the Michigan Humanities Council (MHC), an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is enabling us to expand the activities for this year’s YAF. laminator

Hi everyone, Dexter District Library is looking for some advice on how to get a large scale laminator to work properly. We have an EZLam School Budget Roll Laminator, model BA-EZsb. We have never been able to get this to pull a clean sheet through. Every time we try a large poster, we get a wrinkle somewhere in the laminate. We have repeatedly adjusted the tension with no luck. If you have experience, have had good results with this model, and could give us any tips or tricks, please contact me off list. Any help will be appreciated. Overdues procedures

Greetings, We're wondering what process you use for handling patron accounts with overdue items. We recently discontinued our contract with a collections agency (we were pretty much breaking even) and we're bringing the process in-house. Looking for insight on the following questions. - What's your timeline for contacting patrons / blocking their account / charging them for the item? How many times do you contact a patron before/while/after you take action on their account? - What means do you use to contact the patron: mail, e-mail, phone call, text? - Is there a designated staff person who carries out these procedures, or are the tasks shared by staff? - Any tips on how to be compassionate and flexible while following policy? Greetings! The call for proposals for the 2018 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Library Conference is open through Monday, October 16. Submit your session proposal online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RLC2018. The theme of the 2018 conference is Open Doors, Open Minds, celebrating diversity and inclusion in libraries. The conference will be held April 30-May 2, 2018 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan. The conference is a specially crafted to reach the informational needs of small and rural library staff throughout Michigan. The three-day event features exhibitors, awards, keynote speakers and an array of sessions geared to libraries serving small and rural communities. ALA News for September 12, 2017 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ALA, library community support Hurricane Irma response efforts The American Library Association (ALA) and the library community are supporting response and recovery efforts for the libraries damaged by Hurricane Irma. “We extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by Hurricane Irma,” said ALA President Jim Neal. “We are supporting the Florida Library Association and Florida State Library as they work with local libraries dealing with storm-related damage. We are also coordinating with other states and the Caribbean islands whose libraries were damaged by Irma." ALA Members are encouraged to assist their colleagues in Florida and other areas by participating in local fundraising efforts.
