Interested applicants must submit an Intent to File form by Oct. 31st. The grant program is designed to provide Michigan libraries with the opportunity to develop innovative programs or services that have the potential to develop into sustainable regional or statewide programs, and include strong partnerships between libraries, and/or local community groups or agencies. Eligible applicants include Michigan public, academic, school and special libraries as well as non-profit organizations that serve Michigan libraries. Detailed information on the grant program, including the program timeline, applicant eligibility, Intent to File form, and the application questions are available at www.michigan.gov/lsta<http://www.michigan.gov/lsta>. Applicants may propose a library program or service in any content area appropriate for library services, such as: * To develop an innovative service or program to meet a newly identified community need; * To meet the increased community demand for a service or resource; * To improve or develop new services to target populations, such as people from diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and individuals with limited functional literacy, limited English proficiency or limited information literacy skills. The grant period will be from one to three years and funding will be for $50,000 to $225,000 per year up to a possible total of $500,000 over three years. Grant selection is competitive. MeL Minute: MeL Help

Do you ever wonder where to go to get help with MeL, or to learn more about either the databases or MeLCat? In this MeL Minute we provide a crash course in MeL Help. Helpdesk: The good folks at the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services here in Lansing staff the MeLCat & RIDES and MeL Databases helpdesk 8-5 Mon-Fri. Email is the default means of communication with MCLS staff at the helpdesk: melcathelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melcathelp@mcls.org> or meldatbaseshelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:meldatbaseshelp@mcls.org>. Always include your MeLCat Agency Number and include as much detail about the problem as possible including patron information, barcode information, and what happened when the error occurred. The more information you can provide the better. Please report items sooner rather than later; transaction logs turn over so it's important to be timely. Don't hesitate to report an item if you think something is wonky. There's no question too small or too general. If you need help, contact them! The Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) will hold a "Talk About Friends" event at the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library on Wednesday, November 8th from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. "Talk About Friends is an informal gathering of Friends from the area who come together to share information about their Friends and to engage in conversation about Friends development and activities. It's also a time to promote the United for Libraries statewide membership (which is supported by the Library of Michigan) and the resources available for Friends on the United for Libraries website. Pop-up books

Hi all, interested to hear how other libraries handle some of the more elaborate pop-up books in their collection or some of the interactive non-fiction with pull-tabs and pop-ups, etc? We had some of them in a non-circulating reference area but I fear that they aren't even being seen. Do you just have them in your general collection?
