MeL Minute: New Journal Title Finder

Did you notice that MeL's A-Z journal list went missing there for a little bit this summer? We went out to bid for a service that could meet this need for the Michigan eLibrary and opted to change vendors. We're now using EBSCO's Full Text Finder. It includes the ability to both search and browse for titles. While searching, a keyword suggestion drop-down menu will appear to assist you. Once you have a list of results you can refine your search via facets located on the left hand side of the screen that include the ability to limit via various subjects, to peer-reviewed journals and by resource type such as "report" or "newsletter." Just like with the former A-Z list, once you have a result Full Text Finder will show you each database in MeL that contains access to that title, the years available, and a link to reach it. The browsing list contains subject areas such as Health & Medicine or Religion & Philosophy and shows you how many titles apply that area (in the case of Health & Medicine the number is over 1,700!). You can view a video of the new service here. Full Text Finder is available from the MeL homepage where it is labeled "Magazines and Newspapers." Happy reading! This opportunity will include a full 2.5-day Public Innovators Lab, Nov 7-9, followed by 18 months of coaching. The Inkster Library is located on a hill overlooking a forest and river, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The library serves a population of approximately 25,000. Inkster is a multicultural community located in southeast Michigan. A small but dedicated staff works to provide excellent customer service resulting in a community that strongly supports the library. *The position requires:* Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited program by the American Library Association. At least three years or more employment in a public library preferred. Positive News from Westland

Hi everyone, I know some of you have been following what happened at Westland with interest, and I wanted to give you all a quick and happy update. For those who were unaware, five librarians were suddenly terminated just two days after turning in union intention papers on March 3rd. They were told their positions were eliminated to increase "efficiencies" despite the fact that these librarians were budgeted for in a dedicated 10 year millage that passed by 71% in 2012. As a former librarian from Westland myself, I personally made all of the campaign literature at the time, and our message was definitely about bringing back hours, programming, and staffing after the economic downturn--not removing professional staff. Westland also has a $2.5 million budget surplus, so framing these terminations in terms of "fiscal responsibility" never made sense, especially when you consider that their new "restructuring plan" meant that they now had significantly less librarians per capita and per operating budget compared to the majority of other Class VI libraries in Michigan. Anyways, several other librarians, along with many Westland community members, organized and we relentlessly kept up the pressure on the city to do something about the library's administration. Our efforts paid off, and on June 12th, it was announced that the rest of the library's board had resigned, quickly followed by the director. Then, the following day, the mayor announced that all five of the librarians were offered their jobs back. Three of them are coming back (one is changing careers and another already got snatched up by another library because she's awesome). Currently the library does not have a board, but the mayor is working with TLN to appoint new board members who will hopefully understand that an important part of library board membership is also advocating for the library's services, patrons, and staff, not just budgetary oversight. As it is, there are currently no professional mechanisms to support librarians, or libraries in these kinds of situations. Believe me, I sought them out. We had to experiment with many different methods to finally figure out what worked before we were able to finally make it clear enough that the people of Westland would not accept mass librarian removal at their well-funded library. If anything like this ever happens at your library, I will be happy to help you organize the public resistance necessary to prevent or undo threats like this to your library in the future. Also, let me know if you are interested in a discussion about creating a somewhat more formal organization in preparation for the next time something like this happens, so we can respond faster and more efficiently. Do you have a video game collection?

Hi all, I'd like to collect some information from libraries currently offering video games for check out to their patrons. Please reply to the questions listed below off-list and I'll share my compiled results later. Thanks, Kelly Bennett Head of Circulation, Ferndale Area District Library --- 1. What formats do you circulate (Wii, Playstation 4, Xbox, etc.) 2. How long do they circulate for? 3. Do you keep the actual items on the shelves or do you keep the games in a staff-only area to be placed in the cases upon checkout? 4. Do you have age restrictions on games? 5. Do you purchase games that have higher age ratings on them (M for mature, etc.)? 6. How do you package the games? 7. How do you determine which games to purchase? 8. If you are part of a cooperative, do you allow your games to be interloaned or checked out by patrons who don't belong to your library? 9. How much do you charge per item in late fees? 10. How well have the games circulated?
