Part-time Children's Librarian The Clarkston Independence District Library seeks an enthusiastic, organized individual to join a positive, team-oriented work environment. Salary: $16.00-$22.00 per hour (depending on qualifications) Hours: 18-27.5 hours per week Primary job duties: Duties include, but are not limited to: * Initiates, plans, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by children and teens * Provides direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library material, equipment, and services at the combined youth/adult information desk. * Cultivates and maintains contact with the public, schools, teachers, other libraries, state and regional library associations, and other professional organizations * Responsible for development of assigned collections * Attends and participates in staff meetings and discussions * Perform other library duties as assigned Qualifications: * Master's degree in Library and Information Science or significant completion thereof * Professional and enthusiastic attitude towards providing public library service to patrons of all ages * Experience working with children of all ages, primarily 0-12 years * A desire to serve the public in a positive manner * Familiarity with popular reading materials and genre collections * Strong oral and written communication skills * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships * Knowledge of Integrated Library systems, Polaris preferred * Familiarity with electronic databases and MeL resources * Knowledge of popular office computer programs * Ability to lift, push and/or pull at least 20 pounds * Flexibility to work varied hours Reports to: Head of Children's and Teen Services Send cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references by email, mail or fax to: Tracy Bedford, Head of Children's and Teen Services Clarkston Independence District Library 6495 Clarkston Road, Clarkston, MI 48346 bedfordt(a)cidlibrary.org Fax: 248.625.8852 Deadline for applications: August 18, 2017 at 5:00pm An Equal Opportunity Employer [Tracy 1]

YALSA Institute: Teen-Centered & Teen-Driven Library Services The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce that we are hosting a YALSA Institute in Michigan this September. Librarians and public library staff who work with teens are encouraged to attend one of three sessions. Thanks to the support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services the only cost is a $25 registration fee. Cooke, Jessica Anne Bratt, and ALSC President Nina Lindsay, will be hosting an ALSC Community Forum live chat on the topic Social Justice Practice in Youth Librarianship. This forum will include a live text discussion with the opportunity to ask questions to our presenters. Circling back to this segment of the "Libraries are Not Neutral Spaces" program from 2017 Annual Conference, we will reopen this discussion on tangible practices of social justice advocacy. How do we practice talking about race and modeling inclusion in storytime? How can we work with our colleagues in actual practice of social justice dialogue? At this Community Forum we will have a conversation in order to move from conversation, so that each of us can return to our work with a new practice. This forum will be held on Monday, August 14th 2017, 4pm. This ALSC Community Forum will take place on Adobe Connect. ALSC members will receive an email about the forum a few days before. If so, consider designing a logo to submit for the 2016 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference Logo contest. The winning member of the Michigan library community will receive a complimentary registration to the conference and have their design included in the printed program. The 2018 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference is scheduled for April 30-May2, 2018 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan.
