I discovered a new FREE training resource today for suicide prevention, courtesy of the Jefferson Branch Library staff. The Jason Foundation has free materials and staff training for suicide prevention & online training. They have also added 2 modules recently: Supporting LGBT Students in Schools: Suicide Prevention Among LGBT Youth Childhood and Teen Depression for Educators "JFI believes that awareness and education are the first steps to prevention. We want to establish a Triangle of Prevention by providing students, parents and teachers the tools and resources to help identify and help at-risk youth. This is accomplished through a curriculum unit for students and informational seminars for teachers and parents. This instructional kit provides resources to accomplish this goal. The materials are easy to use and are intended to provide educational information. Eclipse Glasses

If I were not receiving the digest form of the listserv, I would've seen the 'Solar Glasses: Safety & Reputable Vendors' and not asked what I did yesterday, as I was curious about how many libraries in my area were giving out glasses. You've all really shed some light on this topic, so thank you. While the greed and audacity of some people asking for thirty or fifty pairs of glasses is unsurprising, it's strange how there are so many people in this area who want them since it's not in the path of totality. I wonder if people are just trying to sell the glasses on Amazon, or if they are traveling to an area within the path of totality and want to be prepared...or maybe, there are THAT many people who want to watch the eclipse, in earnest. Either way, thanks for discussing this topic, as it has been very interesting. I hope all of the libraries throwing eclipse parties have fun, and the eclipse glasses issue doesn't cause more frustration for you. Lauren Shea

The Library of Michigan and MCLS are pleased to announce a continuation of their partnership with The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation<http://theharwoodinstitute.org/>. There will be a third opportunity for Michigan library staff to participate in the Institute training. This opportunity will include a full 2.5-day Public Innovators Lab, Nov 7-9, followed by 18 months of coaching. Origins of Bad Axe: What's in a Name? Some Michigan towns, such as Bad Axe, have odd names. In 1861, Rudolph Papst and George Pack found a beat-up axe while surveying a state road through Huron County. Papst wrote "Bad Axe Camp" in his survey notes and on a sign placed on the trail. A post office opened there in 1870 with the name Bad Axe. The county board of supervisors platted the village and made it the Huron county seat in 1873.
