Big Talk for Small Libraries - Call for Proposals

The Call for Speakers for Big Talk From Small Libraries 2018 is now open! This free one-day online conference is aimed at librarians from small libraries; the smaller the better! We are looking for speakers from small libraries or speakers who directly work with small libraries. Small libraries of all types – public, academic, school, museum, special, etc. – are encouraged to submit a proposal http://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/bigtalk/. We’re looking for seven 50-minute presentations and five 10-minute “lightning round” presentations. Do you offer a service or program at your small library that other librarians might like to hear about? Have you implemented a new (or old) technology, hosted an event, partnered with others in your community, or just done something really cool? The Big Talk From Small Libraries online conference gives you the opportunity to share what you’ve done, while learning what your colleagues in other small libraries are doing. Here are some possible topics to get you thinking: * Unique Libraries * Special Collections * New buildings * Fundraising * Improved Workflows * Staff Development * Advocacy Efforts * Community Partnerships * That great thing you’re doing at your library! Electronic Resources Specialist Western Michigan University Libraries seeks an Electronic Resources Specialist to enable and maintain access to the library's electronic resources through an Integrated Library System, updating portfolios and reconciling collections with title lists, importing locally created electronic collections, troubleshooting and resolving access issues. Major Duties - Manages the active databases, electronic collections and portfolios in the integrated library system (ILS). Manages community zone update task list. Reports discrepancies to the ILS for correction. Maintains perpetual access indicators. Uploads and configures licenses. - Provides support for electronic resources for faculty, staff and students by recommending, downloading and implementing software. Advises and trains users, troubleshoots hardware and software compatibility issues. Configures vendor platforms and third party applications to ensure seamless access to electronic resources. - Maintains accurate vendor administrative and statistical data and manages usage statistics in the ILS to support the evaluation of electronic resources. Generates, analyzes, evaluates and shares reports for departmental heads, faculty and library administrators. - Communicates and collaborates with service providers, publishers, vendors, consortia, content providers, the university community, and library faculty and staff to ensure seamless access to electronic resources. - Manages locally created electronic collections, importing, deleting and updating portfolios and communicating with members of the metadata team when new collections need cataloging. Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree or higher in related field from an accredited institution. - One year's relevant experience. - Strong organizational and analytical skills. The Harrison Township Public Library serves a population of nearly 25,000 (Class IV) with a budget of just over $415,000. The library is located within a waterfront community near recreational amenities, within a strong school district, and takes pride in our customer-oriented friendly staff. The recently funded library provides a unique opportunity for the creative individual to continue expanding on the hard work of our devoted volunteers. Job Description Human Resources• Recommends and administers personnel policies.• Recommends, schedules, evaluates, promotes, and disciplines employed staff.• Defines expectations for staff performance and sets goals for service and programming; promotes high staff morale.• Conducts staff training and professional development.• Maintains effective relationships with library staff, library volunteers, community leaders, public officials, professional groups and the general public. Facilities and Equipment• Manages the daily operations of the library including maintenance of the library building, grounds, and equipment. Public Relations• Represents the library at appropriate events in order to build relationships, promote library services, and strengthen the presence of the library in the community.• Attends library board meetings, township meetings, and other meetings representing the library.• Publicizes library services through community presentations and lectures, news releases and bulletins, and by advertising library programs of public interest. Position requirements Education: Master’s degree in library science or library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in professional library position, with at least four years in administration or supervision in a public library preferred. License or Certificate: Level I Professional Librarian Certificate issued by the Library of Michigan. Professional Compensation: Full-time base salary range is $50,000-$60,000 dependingon experience and qualifications.
