**** Please excuse cross postings **** Assistant-Associate Librarian-Research and Instructional Services (Adjunct Faculty, Winter Semester 2018) University Libraries at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is accepting applications for an adjunct librarian for Winter Semester 2018 in the Research and Instructional (R&I) Division. The librarian will serve as a liaison to the Seidman College of Business during the interim appointment. Responsibilities include supporting student learning and faculty teaching through instruction on the use of print and electronic resources; research assistance through reference consultations via person-to-person, email, and telephone interactions; collection development activities, and weekly office hours held at Seidman College of Business. In addition, the librarian assists with library instruction for WRT 150: Strategies in Writing. The successful candidate will work 28 hours/week starting January 8, 2017, primarily weekdays with occasional adjustment of hours for evening and/or weekend classes. This position is located on the Grand Rapids Campus of GVSU with occasional travel to the campus in Allendale for meetings and instruction. There are no expectations of scholarship or service for this adjunct librarian however, opportunities may be pursued if time permits. locking video cases

We are having an increasing problem with receiving dvds that are in cases that are locked. They are either not being unlocked prior to sending them out in Mel or they are sliding back to locked position while in transit. We don’t use the locking case system at our library so its problematic to receive a locked dvd. Life would be easier if we could just unlock the dvds oursleves. Can anyone with this system share the manufacturer name and contact info so that we can order the tool to unlock the dvds when they come in? Thanks for your help. To do so, librarians developed “Gold Star Partners,” which connects community partners with library services and provides all the components of summer reading: reading logs, materials, and support from library staff. Since that first year, Gold Star Partners has grown to account for roughly 50% of all summer reading finishers in the library district. Gold Star Partners received the 2016 Demco Upstart Innovation Award from PLA, which honors a public library’s innovative and creative service program. In this webinar, learn how to maximize flexibility and achieve more with volunteers, receive an overview of Gold Star Partners, and learn how to develop community partnerships with day care centers, community centers, senior residential facilities, and other organizations that serve children and adults to increase summer reading participation. Library Director-The Grand Rapids Public Library (MI) Lead the Grand Rapids Public Library is its efforts to connect people to the transforming power of knowledge. Dear Library Friends, As we come to the end of another very busy year and you take stock of your many accomplishments, please don't forget to apply for FOML's *Outstanding Michigan Friends of the Library Merit Award*. Did your Friends of the Library group carry out an outstanding project or a number of successful activities in your community during 2017 that had a significant impact on your library’s services to the community? Tell us about it! It could be for a specific project you carried out in 2017 or based on the full scope of the group’s activities during 2017. The award will be given to two different Michigan Friends groups: one award will go to a library that serves a population of under 12,000 people and one to a library that serves a population of 12,000 or more. Have any libraries tried using Meetup.com to advertise library events? It seems like a good platform for outreach, I've used it personally to find local groups, including book clubs. They seem to have non-profit pricing as well, though I'm waiting to hear back on exactly how generous that is; the $35/month groups are normally charged isn't unreasonable anyway. ALA Advocacy Alert: Net neutrality protections eliminated in draft FCC order

[Take Action For Libraries] Advocacy Alert: Net Neutrality Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=418433&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> What Happened: The day before Thanksgiving, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Pai publicly shared his plan to dismantle network neutrality protections approved by the FCC in 2015 and affirmed by the federal appeals court in 2016. The new draft order is scheduled to be voted on by the five FCC commissioners on December 14. Why It Matters: Net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) must enable access to all legal content and applications regardless of the source and without favoring or blocking specific services or websites. Strong, enforceable rules are critical to the functioning of modern libraries because we rely on the internet to collect, create and disseminate essential online information and services to the public. Libraries and our patrons cannot afford to be relegated to "slow lanes" on the internet.
