All things are made possible when your dreams are powered by your heart. William Kamkwamba. The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library has chosen William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind as this year’s Alpena Reads book. Tickets for William Kamkwamba’s Alpena Reads author talk are now on sale at the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.alpenalibrary.org or by calling 989-356-6188, ext. 10. Tickets are $10 each. William’s true-life story is amazing. In 2000, when he was thirteen years old, famine struck his home country of Malawi. His family went hungry and lost their livelihood when the crops failed. The following year he was forced to drop out of school because his family could no longer afford his tuition. Fearing a life of ignorance and poverty, the young teen turned to the tiny three-shelf library in his village in search of books he hoped would help him keep up with his friends. In these books, he found his dream: He would build a windmill that would produce power to light his home and irrigate his family’s crops. With insufficient English skills and no teacher, he taught himself the basics of physics and electrical engineering using diagrams in the books. At fourteen, against all odds, he built an electricity-generating windmill that eventually drew the attention of the world. Kamkwamba’s visit will be the culmination of a community-wide read of his book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a non-fiction account of how famine and hardship in his home country of Malawi inspired Kamkwamba to build a windmill that changed his life and his community. Reading and writing are critical literacy skills for children to develop, especially in the elementary grades. Our 4th Annual Young Authors' Festival provides an opportunity for children to develop these skills and for parents to learn tips and techniques for supporting their children's literacy development. Please take this opportunity to support children's literacy! *Writing Contest Theme: The Importance of Family and Helping Others* Christopher Paul Curtis's book, *Bud, Not Buddy*, highlights the importance of family and helping others. We invite students to write a personal narrative, poem, or essay related to the importance of family. We also encourage students to write about personal family stories and memories. If students do not want to write about a personal experience, they may write about someone they know, make up characters, etc. Awards are given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each of the grades along with one grand prize winner. Students who win awards will be invited to read their entries at the Nov. 12th festival. The grant program is designed to provide Michigan libraries with the opportunity to develop innovative programs or services that have the potential to develop into sustainable regional or statewide programs, and include strong partnerships between libraries, and/or community groups or agencies. Applicants may propose a library program or service in any content area appropriate for library services, such as: * To develop an innovative service or program to meet a newly identified community need; * To meet the increased community demand for a service or resource; * To improve or develop new services to target populations, such as people from diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and individuals with limited functional literacy, limited English proficiency or limited information literacy skills. The grant program is competitive. The grant period will be from one to three years and funding will be for $50,000 to $225,000 per year up to a possible total of $500,000 over three years. Applications will be reviewed by the Library of Michigan staff and the LSTA Advisory Council as peer reviewers. No more than ONE to THREE grants will be approved. Hi All, MeL Michigana, http://mel.org/michigana is the history steeped part of the Michigan eLibrary. On it you can find excellent digital collections that speak to Michigan history or more importantly, Michigan's place in American history. These primary resources can assist students and adult researchers who are needing access to photographs, diaries, oral histories, maps and more for class assignments, projects or personal research. The digital collections in MeL Michigana are also searchable from the search box you will see on the page. Included in MeL Michigana are 2 subscription resources: HeritageQuest Online<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-proq.php?database=HERI…> and Michigana: Sources in U.S. History Online<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=SMIH>. Of course as with all MeL databases, these are available at no cost to all Michigan residents. Did you know that you can search City Directories in HeritageQuest? In Michigana: Sources in U.S. History Online, you can find actual published documents written by people who either lived that history or who knew/interviewed someone who did! For example, you will find a "Narrative of The Battle of Brownstown" fought on August 9, 1812 under the command of Brigadier General Hull.
