New Editors Named for Michigan History, Society Magazines

My apologies if this is a duplicate - I am also sharing this news with my personal contact list. - Larry New Editors Named for Michigan History, Society Magazines Lansing, Mich.-When you are handed a lemon, you make lemonade. And that's exactly what the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) did when the long-time editor of Michigan History magazine, Patricia Majher, departed at the end of May to take a new post at the University of Michigan. Using a streamlined, innovative approach, HSM reorganized its editorial staff, creating a Lansing-based editorial team that will simultaneously work on all three of its magazines: Michigan History, Chronicle and Michigan History for Kids. The new staff workgroup is working under the banner of HSM Magazines to reflect its unified responsibilities. With the new editorial structure, HSM was able to cut costs, increase efficiency, and eliminate duplicated responsibilities. Not only will the editorial team continue to bring readers top-notch Michigan history-related feature articles and special sections, but it will also strive to bring even more value to subscribers and members of the Society, along with meeting the mission of all three magazines: to explore the history and heritage of all Michigan's peoples. "Our new Editorial Team will take all three of our publications to new heights," commented publisher Larry J. Wagenaar, who also serves as Executive Director of the Historical Society of Michigan. "We have a group of very talented people who have already melded into a collaborative unit, and our readers, subscribers and members will definitely benefit from the new structure." The new team consists of newly promoted Editor in Chief and Creative Director Nancy Feldbush, who will oversee the operation and design of all three magazines and also remains as the Society's Director of Communications; newly promoted Michigan History for Kids Editor Amy Bradfield, who will lead the production of the Society's third- and fourth-grade-level publication; recently appointed Features Editor Christopher Blaker, who will work on feature articles for both Michigan History and Chronicle magazines and give input to Michigan History for Kids; newly promoted Special Sections Coordinator Andie McBride, who will manage the various departments and specialty sections for both Michigan History and Chronicle magazines and give input to Michigan History for Kids; and recently appointed Graphics and Multimedia Manager Maureen Buecking, who will create the look and feel of each magazine. Collaborative Summer Library Program Call for Ideas Children's Manual and Early Literacy Manual, 2018 Work has begun on the CSLP 2018 Children's and Early Literacy Manuals, and we would love your input! We're looking for ideas for programs, books, activities, displays, decorations, storytimes, incentives, and more. Our manuals incorporate diverse books, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), early literacy, hands-on activities, and programming for a wide range of interests, age groups, and budgets. Whether you've got an idea for one activity or an entire program outline, we'd love to hear from you. Our 2018 theme is "Libraries Rock!" Below, you'll find subthemes for each manual, to help give you an idea of what we'll be covering in each one. Social media can be a mixed bag information but one out of ten times something catches my eye and gets me excited. This particular book and author caught my boss's eye (on Facebook!) and sent it along to me. I quickly ordered a couple of books for our library's collection, contacted the author which led to meeting him, booking him for a program in the fall and receiving an advance copy of the book that I can.not.put.down. Letters about Literature is an annual contest sponsored by the National Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. Young readers write letters to authors, living or dead, describing how the authors' works changed their lives. Students participate through classroom activities or by writing to an author on their own. Participating schools and libraries encourage students to submit letters. Letters about Literature winners are: * State Level I (grades 4-6) winner - Beatrice Mulder, a 6th-grader at Holland Christian Schools, who wrote to author Sharon Draper about her book, Out of My Mind. She won a reading promotion grant to the Herrick District Library. In her letter, Mulder tells about how the book encouraged her to reach out to a disabled classmate. "I had to train my brain to think, how's he doing, instead of the usual, can he hear me?" * State Level II (grades 7-8) winner - Alexis Krumbach, a 7th-grade at Williamston Middle School, who wrote to author Joni Eareckson Tada about her book, Joni, An Unforgettable Story. She won a reading promotion grant to Williamston Middle School. Krumbach wrote that Tada's story helped her put her learning disability into a broader context and "to appreciate my strengths and blessings... If you can focus on what is positive in your life, I can focus on positive things in my life, too." * The State Level III (grades 9-12) winner's name was withheld by request. The Ann Arbor resident wrote to author Maya Angelou about her book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The student won a reading promotion grant to Skyline High School. The Level III winner explains in her letter how Angelou's story of growing up a minority was a lesson for her own life: "I'm rediscovering my language, my family, and my culture," the student wrote. State Finalists were: * Andrew Ouellette of Beverly Hills - Level I * Olivia Frye of Grosse Pointe Farms - Level I * Madeline Gibb of Fenton - Level I * Trucy Phan of Williamston - Level II * Zyk Hlavacek of Saginaw - Level II * Jacqueline Mularoni of Bloomfield Hills - Level II * Name withheld of Dexter - Level III * Hannah-Noel Lucas of Perry - Level III * Molly Hulbert of Middleville - Level III Michele Ellis of Williamston Middle School was chosen as the 2016 Michigan Letters about Literature Teacher of the Year. "Literature is a window for children to see and understand other cultures and people through. As readers, they then can understand their own experiences through the characters they connect with," Letters about Literature Coordinator Karren Reish said. "The letters they write in the program help them articulate this. Reading and literature are not just homework, but a way for students to understand their lives and the lives of people around them." State winners receive a $50 Schuler Books & Music gift card and $250 reading promotion grant for the library of their choice. State finalists receive a $20 gift card to Schuler Books & Music. In addition, we're very pleased to welcome Larry Neal, Director of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library, as our keynote speaker. Larry will be sharing his recent experiences and insights on being President of the Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). He will be presenting, "Tales from The Hague to the White House from a Former President," and will also discuss his thoughts on the future direction of libraries today.
