Hello all- We have finally decided to retire our VHS and audio-cassette collections. My Board would like to see the items still in use in some way. We offered them in a sale to patrons and only sold 5 of several hundred... We are now looking to off-load the remainder of the collection. I even have a Board member willing to drive the collection to its new home. This size donation would likely overwhelm our local Salvation Army and/or Goodwill stores. I'm contacting our local schools as well, but they are likely to only be interested in a small selection of what we have. Does anyone know of an organization, library, school, or other place that would be happy to inherit a tape collection? Please reply off-list. Thanks! Wayne State's Kafi Kumasi Selected as 2016-2018 iSchool Research Fellow at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Wayne State School of Library and Information Science Associate Professor, Dr. Kafi D. Kumasi, has been selected by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign iSchool's faculty to be a research fellow for the 2016-2018 academic years. Research fellows are chosen because their work is relevant to the interests of the School's faculty and students. Kumasi will give at least one lecture during her appointment. "I'm honored to serve as a research fellow for the iSchool. I look forward to sharing my ideas and inquiries, particularly as they relate to educational inequities in school libraries. We are at a critical juncture in our nation with regard to human and civil rights concerns, especially among minoritized groups. Illinois is a great place for me to share my work in this area, as I know many Illinois faculty who are deeply committed to issues of social justice," said Kumasi. Kumasi's research interests focus on issues of literacy, equity, and diversity, particularly occurring in urban educational environments and spanning K-12 and graduate school contexts. Her publications include book chapters and journal articles in the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults, School Libraries Worldwide, School Library Media Research, and Urban Library Journal, among others. She teaches in the areas of school library media, urban librarianship, multicultural services and resources, and research methods. Congratulations Dr. Kumasi! Stephen T. I had a fair amount of requests for the pre-employment skill test. We used the attached document as a computer skill assessment in our last round of interviews. There are a few tweaks I might consider for the questions next time.the question about accessing the online account was missed by all who took it. But the details in the word document requirements were very telling as to whether the applicant could follow directions. We allowed 20 minutes for this test. We also did a simple filing test using old card catalog cards, and allowed 30 minutes for that part. This was effective for our needs. Feel free to use whatever you find helpful!
