State Board of Education Member, Michelle Fecteau, Receives Award from MAME

The Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME), the association for School Library Media Specialists in Michigan, awarded State Board of Education member, Michelle Fecteau, with its Outstanding Government Official Award. MAME past-presidents Gwenn Marchesano and Kathy Lester presented this award to Ms. Fecteau at the State Board of Education meeting this past week on January 12, 2016. The MAME Outstanding Government Official award recognizes an individual at the local, state or national level who has demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of school library services, as shown by the advocacy, support, or introduction of legislation or initiatives that promote school library programs. Ms. Fecteau was nominated for the award by MAME Past-President, Kathy Lester, for her role in the unanimous passage of a resolution in support of school libraries by the State Board of Education in October 2014. Over the past 10 years, the number of school library media specialists has dropped over 60% giving Michigan the current ranking of 46th in the nation in supporting its school library programs. During this same time period, Michigan was one of only six states to have negative improvement of 4th grade reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading assessment. Ms. Fecteau’s efforts shed light on the importance of equitable access to certified school library media specialists for all students. The State Board of Education resolution recognized the important role of school libraries and certified school library media specialists in increasing student achievement in our schools. It called for school administrators to use the “SL21 Measurement Benchmarks for Michigan School Libraries for 21st Century” developed by the Library of Michigan’s School Library Workgroup to assess the quality of school library programs in individual buildings. We are excited to see how librarians across the great state of Michigan are harnessing their vision to shape the future of libraries in Michigan. We're interested in poster proposals on topics in every area of librarianship, from the front lines and from behind the scenes, addressing the range of issues of critical concern to academic libraries. Broad participation is encouraged from librarians, staff, LIS students, and administrators from all types of academic libraries (including but not limited to public universities, private colleges, and community colleges). Poster proposals should include a description of no more than 300 words. Poster proposals will be evaluated on relevance to the academic library profession, originality and creativity, and clarity/applicability of content and outcomes. MI Harwood Cohort Selected!

33 Michigan Libraries Selected by the Library of Michigan and MCLS to Participate in Harwood Public Innovation Training. In partnership with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation and the Library of Michigan, the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) announced today that 50 individuals from 33 Michigan libraries were selected to undergo a 10-month public innovation training regimen. The program kickoffs with a 1.5-day workshop led by Harwood Institute certified coaches, March 15-16, 2016. That training will be followed up by nine months of coaching calls from Harwood and guidance and support from Harwood trained Library of Michigan and MCLS staff. The Harwood Public Innovators Workshop is a 1.5-day experience designed to help individuals and organizations learn what it means to Turn Outward - to use the community, not the conference room, as a reference point for choices and action. A goal of this initiative is to help libraries strengthen their role as core community leaders and change-agents. The selected libraries represent a spectrum of library types, sizes and geographic locations in Michigan, all with a common goal to engage more deeply in their communities. Internship available: Archives Assistant

Archives Assistant This is a great opportunity for those interested in an archival career. This position serves on the front lines of Interlochen’s young institutional archives initiative. This person will be providing much-needed assistance in the organization of the archives, conducting inventories across campus, and assisting in the digitization, cataloging of print and photographic archival materials, and assisting the archivist in a variety of capacities. Main job functions include handling, processing, and cataloging archival materials by providing standard metadata. Other responsibilities include digitizing photographic collections and handling negatives, slides, and print photographic materials. This position will be sharing its time (40 hrs/week) between the Institutional Archives and Photo Archives. Other assignments depend upon the interests and skills of the intern. Applicants currently in an MLS or archival studies program are preferred. This position requires for the applicant to be proficient with technology, extremely detailed oriented, able to work well within a framework, and willing to participate in a team environment. Academic Library Intern This is a great internship opportunity for someone interested in librarianship as a career. This position serves the needs of the Interlochen Arts Camp by helping to provide campers, faculty, and staff with resources to support their arts specialty and personal interests while on campus. Duties include circulation, shelving, book processing, and implementing summer programs. This position also requires the ability to assist library patrons of various ages and interests with finding information by utilizing a variety of databases and the catalog. Other responsibilities may include summer projects ranging from collections management to work on the library website. Applicants currently in an MLS program are preferred. Applicants must possess excellent customer service skills, proficiency with technology, attentiveness to detail, and a willingness to participate in a team environment.
